We have nothing like AfD in the US.  Much less such a party that can gain double digit support and rising.

i think we have something far worse - limited choice creating odd bedfellows and making for one (of our two parties in control) to take on the personality, needs and world view of radicals. they might not be legitimatized like in Germany, but they are acting and influencing our politics and culture.

Germany would be better to have our system - it could crush their inbreds

US would be better to have Germany's system - would could isolate our inbreds better and remove the indirect power they have now

my two cents

How will AfD's success affect the way Germany/(the EU) deals with Italy?

It's going to get ugly when the debt crisis reemerges.  Under current conditions, another bailout would be politically costly and might make AfD the majority party in the East.  Really tough sell to bail out the PIIGS again when the eastern states remain so poor and behind the rest of Germany.

The US first past the post system forces anyone who wants to win to build broad coalitions.  Germany has proportional representation.  Any group that can get 5% of the vote can get seats in the Bundestag.  The extreme version of this is Israel where there isn't a 5% threshold.  Take a look at how much influence this gives small, sometimes extreme parties.  The middle is so divided that the loons have real influence and get to play kingmaker at times.

yes i know that.

my point is here in the US our loon population is actually much smaller (than in Germany or how we tend to think of ourselves). thus my post. Our loons are hitting above their weight now IMO

conjecture on American versus Germany loon populations. Who knows man...

I'm not entirely sure that's true. I really wouldn't be surprised if an anti-immigration fascist party here could get 15%, if we had a proportional representation system. Maybe more.

i don't know man

Rs are anti-immigrant, free market, anti-obama, anti-government, anti-abortion, and pro gun. thats lots of folks that i don't think hold all parts equal. i think some are adopting and supporting views that they never had, or never really wanted but they organically have to because to them is really about the party only, not the issues. So in turn all the anti-shit is ramped to 11 but i think its simply part of being a party hack IMO and part of us being stuck in this culture war.

...just look at Germany.  The two parties that have dominated the country since WW2 got hammered in a regional election this weekend.

Merkel's CDU is still the largest party in Hesse at 27.4% but they lost almost 11 points of support.  That largely went to AfD and the Free Democrat (free market) party.  The Social Democrats also lost 11 points and are now under 20%, tied with the Greens who gained most of those votes. AfD is going to have 15% of the seats in the equivalent of the state legislature.

you mean people eventually figure out that socialism and no borders is a bad idea?  No way.  Guess they're just greedy racists like the rest of us.

The East wasnt ready for unification. They should have initiated a reform period first. In fact, much of the rhetoric looking to undo Germany and the EU at large comes from formerly communist states. They never got the post-Nazi memo that ethnonationalism is bad.  I have met a few East Germans that are openly and casually racist even against white people that are non-German.  I get that a quick move was needed to keep Russia out, but near instant annexation wasn't the answer. Southern Europe has different and stubborn economic issues, but the EU would be a lot better if it had made countries achieve higher economic milestones before entry.

Even Brexit was built partly on a massive influx of Poles and Romanians into the UK, who will adjust to UK life fine in the long run, but the migration occurred because of the drastic economic difference between new and old EU member countries, and the fact that English, rather than German or French, is the 2nd or 3rd language of choice. Can't say race played a factor since both Poland and Romania are white (And have more attractive women than the UK). The UK also effectively assimilated a nearly equal number of Indians over a longer and more reasonable timeframe.  Of course, lies regarding Syrian migrants is what put Brexit over the top so there was some racism at play in eeking out the Brexit victory.

She'll do whatever she has to in order to hold on to power.  She already has her Grand Coalition with the Social Democrats and it's killing both parties.  In the unlikely even that AfD can top 20% nationally I wouldn't bet against Merkel working with them.  Politicans' promises are worth their weight in gold.

or not...
