  1. And the GO with the hand me down strap
  2. Here are a couple of pics of the Ball from yesterday’s post
  3. Picked one up last week from Ashford. It’s the discontinued BMW partnership and I could certainly live without the cross branding. That said, when grading on a curve, it’s subtle and reasonably well done. Overall the early impressions are very good. It wouldn’t be worth the $5,000 MSRP but it was marked down to ~$1,400 and is great for that price. I was just looking for something casual for the weekend and got the power reserve version with a black case and brown alligator strap. Immediately removed the strap and put on a white Barton rubber band that I had laying around. With the quick change spring I see more colors coming my way soon. First thoughts: - The tritium is cool but not as bright as expected. Compared to other Ball models it’s conservatively used and a quick google shows that the orange and blue used are toward the bottom of the brightness scale. It took a while for my eyes to adjust to the dark and honestly traditionally lume is brighter immediately. But I woke up in the middle of the night and the Ball was still going and easy to read - but not glowing by any means. - Without the BMW logo this would be a better watch. At least the only overt one is a small roundel at 3 that likely goes unnoticed by everyone but the wearer. I barely notice it but abilities to ignore vary. Apparently designed by the primary JLC designer of the 90s and / or 2000s. There are nods to BMW design language but they’re nice in their own right and no one would make the connection except for the co branding. Overall the case just has a few interesting visual cues like the lug shape and curved side profile. - The crystal is unexpectedly nice - particularly the perimeter that has a modest blue glow if it catches the right light. Reminds me a bit of the Milgauss green which I’ve always liked and felt it brought a bit of irreverence to the watch. - Finishing is pretty high end. Well decorated ETA movement, genuine alligator strap, very solid deployant clasp. As a bonus, the strap dimensions are the same as my GO, including fitting the GO clasp, and the Ball is alligator and has a thicker pad. It’s overall more substantial and looks better than the original to me. Just looked back at Ashford. Price on the power reserve was increased to $2,250 but the similar GMT has dropped to $1,200. When I ordered the prices were essentially reversed. Pics to come but, until then, here are some from reviews for reference.

  5. Because sometimes believing takes the place of thinking
  6. Followed by him making it worse, declaring success and his supporters emphatically agreeing.
  7. I don’t understand. There’s not a single flag, insignia or emblem on those Ukrainians. How are we supposed to know they’re patriots? Can someone link me to their Facebook accounts or Twitter feeds to verify patriotism?
  8. I’ve got round Jacob Bromwell. Love it. Like you I’ll usually finish in a day or two. Frankly if I’m using a flask I’m also not going to the top shelf and most likely have tossed it in my golf bag on a cool day. Back to the flask, it’s solid copper and develops a nice patina and unique character. A few years ago they switched from made in the USA to an outsourced manufacturer. I say that to say the current listed prices are often steeply discounted (say 70+ %). If you’re interested and willing to keep an eye on it I’ve waited for those sales and then loaded up so I can pass them out as gifts because they’re great at $50 - 70 even if $300 is crazy https://www.jacobbromwell.com/collections/prestige-copper-flasks

  10. The distinction I see (and I’m very much for more gun regulation) is the ability for a manufacturer to infer whether criminal activity is occurring. People collect guns. They don’t collect opioids. There were supply chain indicators that should (actually did) indicate opioids were being prescribed beyond their clinically appropriate levels. Not sure how that gets established when collecting guns (and using either for hunting or at a range) is a legitimate hobby.
  11. Nm. Can’t spoiler. Lewdle is very surly today.
  12. Well fuck. It’s useless now. Guess you didn’t get a good deal just the factory seconds price.
  13. Today’s update. A bit darker still and maybe a bit more definition of the marbling. Biggest change though is that the liquid that was drawn out and pooled on day 1 has either absorbed or been evaporated. The steak also feels a bit firmer. This is the second side (last shot above) so it’s essentially shows the brining progress over about 30 hours whereas yesterday’s post was over about 3 or 4. Just breaking free from work so I won’t be cooking tonight. They’re vacuum sealed and ready to go or freeze.
  14. He didn’t declare winning the war on Christmas until last December so….
  15. Then about 3 hours later I flipped and did the same brine on the other side. Surprising change in a short time. Noticeably darker and the marbling is more pronounced. Below is the second side which is pretty close to the original above. Also if you’re concerned that there are only 4 steaks despite having 7 free days, don’t worry I picked up a couple wagyu picanha as well.
  16. This morning Mrs. Brown Water left for a week long girls trip. My first act as a temporary bachelor was to stop by HEB to stock up for the next week. They had some good prime t bones and ribeye on sale so I picked them up and got the dry brine started. I’ll be working from home most of the week so I should have a chance to document progress. I’m a big proponent of salting well ahead of cooking and thought it might be interesting to show how a steak changes over a couple days. Below is around 10am. Brine is a combination of fine (which I think acts like a primer) and course (but more like kosher than the usual size) Himalayan pink salt.
