I had a similar play through pattern. TLOU 1, four or so play throughs, then only one time for TLOU 2. I waited a long time for it and I was really, truly tied to the growth of the relationship between Joel and Ellie. I knew, as in all things, Joel could die. The how and why is what pissed me off, particularly that early in the game.
Then to be forced, not allowed to choose, forced on a different story arc vexed me greatly. Maybe as an alt ending but... I love the various arcs in Cyberpunk 2077 for example. Hell, I was lucky and got what I and many/perhaps most others think is the best in my first play through, but I did them all. ALL
So I'm not opposed to weird variation story arcs or even endings. There are some tragically sad and troubling ones in Cyberpunk that I loved playing through. Which leads me to the end of TLOU2 that I got and didn't want. The message wasn't lost on me, I got it, I just didn't like the way it was told, and particularly being forced upon me. Had a choice been presented...well.. I would have been far more satisfied.
As for season 3 of TLOU, I've heard some speculation, that makes some sense but I need to investigate. The idea is that when they signed the HBO contract just at TLOU 2 was being released and TLOU 3 game was all but certain in both party's mindset. Hence, 3 seasons. Need to see when the contract was signed and look at more details to see if that theory has any merit.
I throw out some more speculation on Ellie as a character. That Joel was Ellie's foil, there relationship was what pushed the narrative in the show. After Joel dies, she basically has no one to properly foil or check her and continue her character growth, hence a far less likeable character in broad strokes. Dunno how true that is just food for thought.
