  1. I’m jealous. Both my kids have us knee deep in high school sports activities, so no opening weekend for me. Hopefully I’ll make it back down to Shackelford County to bust some of my buddies culls or does in Nov-Dec. Plan on hunting Osage County in Oklahoma gun season. Living vicariously through you guys until then… I miss the old prickly pear and mesquite country.
  2. We had a lease out by Throckmorton years ago that was infested by hogs. One of the guys shot this hog close to dark and we decided to let it lay as it was a Saturday night and a big game was coming on, so we ran back to camp to watch the game (old school days - generator, TV, DirecTV satellite dish in concrete in Home Depot Homer bucket). We returned to pick up the hog about three hours later and there was nothing but bones. Picked clean.
  3. 2023/2024 Season secured. 25 lbs. from local grocery store that does roasting all through August at various stores. Pro tip - pick up a couple boxes of quart size ziplocks.
  4. I’m ordering live tapeworms on Amazon Prime, stat. New fad? Wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

    Pizza

Saw this thread pop up and list some of my old favs in Austin, namely Via 313, Homeslice, and Marye’s in my old hood. Not pizza and it’s been a while since I’ve had one but Little Deli used to make the best Italian subs west of central Pennsylvania. Hopefully, they’re still badass and if so, you shouldn’t miss their Italian sub.
  6. Thought some of you might like to see this home. Frank Lloyd Wright designed home for sale here in Tulsa. https://www.trulia.com/p/ok/tulsa/3704-s-birmingham-ave-tulsa-ok-74105--2108776670
  7. No worries. The photo looks like dry hands but my kid’s hands were wet each time. I’ve pounded that in him at a young age. Only had one net, otherwise they would have all been netted in the water but you have to do your best running to an excited kid catching his first cutthroats. RMac - yes, chile rellenos at Orlando’s for the celebratory dinner. I’m always a Christmas order but believe I actually prefer their red Chile best.
  8. We caught all the trout on Rio Grande Kings, Lime Trudes, Sparkle Duns, and X Caddis that I tied last winter. We probably could have caught even more fish with hopper-dropper but in cutthroat water, I only fish dries. The little Rio Grande cutts will bite anything but they have to be one of fastest takes in fly fishing. If your hook up rate is 50%, you’re a world class angler. Mine was in the teens. New Mexico Fish & Game has done a fantastic job in recovery efforts with this fishery. If anyone is interested, PM and I’ll give you details.
  9. Spur of the moment cannonball run to the New Mexico high country with the kid… First order of business was kid’s request -Black Mesa hike to Oklahoma high point on the trip out. Beautiful, vast empty mesa country brimming with all types of wildlife. Hotter than hell and no shade but worth it. I’d recommend this hike in cool seasons - Very nice Nature Conservancy property at trailhead. On to the destination - High country of the northern New Mexico Sangre de Cristos and lots of Rio Grande cutts. The Land of Enchantment still very enchanting.
  10. Jalapeno and Sausage cream gravy and biscuits. My son’s usual Sunday morning breakfast request.
  11. Haven’t made it there either. I should be flogged twice. My parents and their friends used to road trip to Eischen’s a couple of times a year. I need to accelerate my Okie trips after thirty great years in Texas.
  12. I’ve eaten at Hodad’s and a Thai restaurant near by in Ocean Beach that he featured. Both were excellent. Most of the Austin restaurants with Counter Cafe being one of our old standbys pre-Covid at original location. I should be flogged as I’ve never been to Nic’s Grill in OKC despite literally dozens of friends recommending it to me over the years. Road trip in near future…
  13. “Your tip for today is to buy low and sell high.” The above lands better when you stare them straight in the eyes with a crazed, wide-eyed look.
  14. Years ago on a spring break, we took our kids on a camping trip to southern New Mexico near White Sands. We camped at a Valley of Fires, which was short trip to White Sands and also close to some mountains that we wanted to hike. I booked four days at the campsite (really nice Federal campground) and the park director was an old cowboy type guy. He said “when you check out, ask me about Roswell and I’ll tell you the true story.” A few days later, I’m checking out and ask him to tell the Roswell story. He leans back in his chair, smiles and says “well, I hate to burst your bubble but the truth about Roswell is the Army Air Corps crashed a B-29 outside of Roswell and the B-29 was carrying a fully armed nuclear warhead. They had to make up a story about weather balloons to hide the fact that they were all scrambling around 100mph after almost vaporizing Roswell and having a radioactive debris cloud settle over Amarillo. That’s the truth.” Most logical story I’ve heard. I still believe him.
  15. Big amen! Best chile rellenos in the free world too.

  17. Yep. One of the reasons. Tulsa is still hot in summer but not blast furnace hot. We’ve hit three days of 100F temps this year.
  18. I’m an Okie but that was the first thing I thought when I read the article. However, Grand Lake nearby proposed development is not exactly a shithole by any stretch.
  19. Ran across this article tonight on the GreatToyota War in Chad and thought you all would enjoy. I’d love to have a Hilux: https://www.historydefined.net/the-great-toyota-war/
  20. When we lived in ATX, we’d spend week and a half in north County San Diego at the end of July every year. I was always one depressed SOB getting back on the plane for the return flight to Austin each year. I definitely recommend a trip out to Alpine if the monsoon season is strong. It’s usually quite pleasant out there in late July and August when monsoon rains pop on in the afternoons. It’ll definitely help beat the blues.
  21. That never happened. I went on a fishing trip that day…. Out of sight, out of mind. Ha!
  22. I apologize if the following is trite - an old west Texas man gave me a super power for dealing with ass blistering weather: wet a bandana with ice cold water and place it around back of your neck. You’ll need to re-apply water if you’re out in the heat for long duration but literally, it is like a super power when coping with extreme high heat. Some PhD will write a thesis on the science behind keeping your blood cool in the back of your neck. In the meantime, know that it works…
  23. 2011 was such an ass whipping. Do. Not. Have. Fond. Memories. Of that shit.
