  1. They are. Problem is that human subjects vary much more than lab animals or protocols, so your results are all over the fucking place with the same treatments. Can introduce a lot of noise that actually slows down development. This is why people mentioned up thread the strategy of going after it with antivirals that are already approved in the near term while simultaneously trying to develop an effective vaccine. By the way, if you're pinning your hopes on somebody stumbling on a vaccine in some other country that doesn't have a rigorous testing and development process...you're probably going to be disappointed.
  2. We're hitting Scotland in May...supposedly. Going to see how much paying the Chase Sapphire Reserve helps us on this one. I made some noise to the wife about cancelling last night and hit a lot of static as well.
  3. Yes. Vaccine production at scale actually takes quite a bit of time, in addition to the science and shit that goes into formulating it on the front end. Regardless of what happens elsewhere in the world, the FDA isn't going to let people get injected with whatever the fuck they "think" works. It has to be proven effective and safe before they'll sign off on it, even with fast track approval. That process also takes time. For example think of the normal flu vaccines. In years where the virus mutates significantly enough to not be effective at scale; even with small mutations and therefor small variation in vaccine formula, the new version is almost never produced in time to make a dent in that year's flu. That is not from lack of trying, or tons of red tape.
  4. Again, vaccine development best case scenario is a year. That's with the stars aligning and heavens opening, and no hiccups along the way.
  5. Pretty difficult run in to the finish. We'll see, as injuries mount Arteta has less and less player options. In any case as @yoladu said, the performances have been night and day. If we don't qualify it's not for lack of trying and certainly not Arteta's fault.
  6. Players that looked fucking awful suddenly look decent to good. Coaching matters. Fuck the board for waiting as long as they did. The league campaign would have had been much more achievable if they wouldn’t have sat on their hands when the writing was on the wall.

  8. I go for allergy testing next week, so I had to go cold turkey on antihistamines for 7 days prior to the appointment. Fuck me this was a bad week to do it, but is there ever a good week in central texas?

So this was a nice surprise to get today:
  10. #keepaustinbeautiful used to be a thing. they still have a website at https://keepaustinbeautiful.org/ but I can imagine it's more difficult to get volunteers to clean up an area being used as an encampment than when it's used as parkland or green space.
  11. During the week you’ll be fine for lost mines. It’s the most strenuous of what you mentioned, the other two are not hard at all. I’d recommend the window about an hour prior to sunset if you can do lost mines without physical difficulty. Bring beer and a headlamp for the walk out, it’s fantastic viewing. FYI it’s uphill the whole way back.
  12. You obviously don't live in Austin. This happens every few years as south Austin has a ton of garage conversions: https://www.fox7austin.com/news/code-department-cracking-down-on-decades-old-garage-conversions-in-south-austin
  13. @ROFL BOXI'm in Austin. You actually patched up our roof after that tree fell on the electrical line and ripped the mast down. I'm still amazed our house didn't burn down.
  14. You have to pull a permit to make a garage door non-functional, as this essentially enlarges the square footage of the house. You would then have to ensure current codes are followed with regards to fire egress, any electrical or hvac work. With code enforcement already being on her and you not wanting them in the house, this is probably not the best course of action. I'd say option 2 is your easiest and cheapest option. If it's not truly falling down in pieces, think about bondo'ing any holes so it appears functional and whole from the outside. That would likely make the code officer satisfied.
  15. @ROFL BOX So in a somewhat related question, we have a hail claim that was approved. Our adjuster noted damage to the carport and our claim included a payment for that. However, it's one of those ugly aluminum monstrosities that I'm pretty sure one can't and wouldn't "repair", and I'm fairly certain the payment wasn't enough to replace it (if we'd even want to). I also haven't broken out the tape measure but I'd bet it doesn't meet setback requirements, so pulling a permit would be more headache than I want to deal with. Since the insurance company has given us money, are we obligated to spend it on the carport (or main dwelling roof)? Full disclosure we're selling the house, so while upgrading the venting to a ridge vent would be nice I don't really want to spend extra money.
  16. Just when I thought Kevin Costner and nic cage couldn’t get legitimate work anymore
  17. Buy more chickens my dude.
  18. At least it was coyote proofed.
  19. Hopefully that means AMN can get some time in the center. Would love his physical gifts being used there in the future, dude can run.

Headed through Frankfurt next week. How many bottles can you bring back duty free?
  21. Soares plays primarily on the right, no?
  22. Despite their head start and fact that so far they seem to not suck as much at engineering and design? I've got no skin in the game but comparing Ford to Tesla; assuming everyone started from scratch tomorrow I'd bet on Tesla and its not close. Das Germans and Japanese would make me think harder but I'd still lean to Tesla.
  23. Meh, I imagine Russians would say it's just a combination of vodka and manliness that is keeping the virus at bay.
