  1. Modeling the program after Paul Johnson's Georgia Tech is not in Tech's sights, even though it's not a bad idea. They fancy themselves as something better than they are. They are sand aggies, after all.
  2. I don't think this is really a nightmare scenario. We've got a top 3-4 team going into next season without doing shit. Is it a "superteam?" Is it a WS lock? No and no. But it doesn't have to be. What I described is a "spend smart and keep your powder dry" approach. Big money, big year free agent deals often don't work out and can cripple a team. Making big acquisitions during the season, once the team has proven that it's a playoff contender, and with some team control has been the Astros method. It's better to make a big investment when you have a lot more assurance that the investment is going to pay off. It has worked, you can't argue that.
  3. I predict what will actually happen is that Click will pick up 2-4 free agents that no one has ever heard of (not top of the heap guys, anyway). We'll roll into the season basically with what we have now. No Correa, no JV, no Greinke, no Graveman. We'll have really good 1-6 hitters, assuming Yuli and Brantley don't fall off a cliff and Bregman finds himself. From there it will be all about what kind of seasons some of these guys have. Will one of Chas/Meyers/Siri separate themselves and become the everyday CF and mash at the plate? I'd like it if that happened. Will Pena be our next everyday SS? If not him, then who will it be? As for pitching, what kind of seasons will our starters have? Will LMJ stay healthy for a whole season? There's a lot of variance in what the team's record will be by the All Star Break and trade deadline. If we're in the hunt and we're buyers then I would expect Click to add big, expensive pieces at that time to try to win another series. If he adds guys with some team control for a couple of years, we could be setting up for another 2019 roster situation. But I don't really expect any big acquisitions over the winter.
  4. So very sorry. Here's the ROFL BOX's Notes version: "My wife talks too much. The end."
  5. My wife complains that I don't listen to her anymore, which is true. But it's not my fault. I used to listen to her; every word. What has happened in the intervening 12 1/2 years is that I have slowly been trained by the fact that about 80% of what she says is irrelevant filler. For example, if I ask her, what's the agenda for this weekend. She could tell me that kid 1 and kid 2 have a playdate on Saturday from 10-2, kid 2 has a birthday party from 3-4:30 and on Sunday kid 3 has birthday party from 2-3:30 and that is all. Instead, I hear about her new hairdresser (hair appointment on Friday, not the weekend and during a time that doesn't affect me), something about her car, something about her mom, something about our health insurance and a bunch of other shit I just completely tuned out. It took her at least 10 minutes tell get it all out. When she was finished I asked her, "So, just to confirm, kid 1 and kid 2 have a playdate on Saturday from 10-2, kid 2 has a birthday party from 3-4:30 and on Sunday kid 3 has birthday party from 2-3:30 and that's it, right?" Her: "Yes, that's right." Tone.
  6. 20 to 30 million per year is quite a large vicinity.
  7. I don't know, but he's the best starting FA pitcher available right now who's not old as hell. You are going to have to pay him top-2 in the rotation starting pitcher money. So probably $18-20M AAV. Minimum 5 years, I would think.
  8. Robbie Ray
  9. Fan of other team takes issue with Houston Astros and their fans. News at 11.
  10. It seemed like it was 100% his choice at the time, but the Astros might have just been silent and waiting to make a decision on him until after the season. Sounds like they've got a couple of young pitching coaches who might be prospects for other jobs and want to retain them over keeping Strom. It also sounds like Strom might not be done. So it sounds like he's choosing not to come back to the Astros. I hope the club didn't do anything to run him off. This. We're in a 'win now' window. I don't think we're a playoff team without Correa this year. I don't think we're a playoff team without him next year as the roster is currently constructed. Same. Like I said, I hope we didn't do anything to run him off. If this condition is true then everyone will know about it and it will affect his value for everyone. We're going to suck again at some point. No reason to waste the window we have right now though. We need him to be a playoff team.
  11. When you make it to the World Series it means you have a winning team and you don't need to change that much. I thought Dusty was great, both as the right personality and X's and O's. I'd pay Correa whatever it takes. He's the heart and soul of this team. Super talented and a super competitor. I'd give him 8/292 without batting an eye. If there was a higher bidder, I'd top it. Then I'd insure the fuck out of the contract. I'd go get a legit starting pitcher. That's the one major ingredient this team lacked. Robbie Ray would probably be my guy. I think the loss of Strom may be as big as losing Correa. Pitchers were better because of him. Fun year. The team did better than expected and overcame a shitload of adversity with losing Verlander and all.
  12. You are one ignorant miserable son of a bitch.
  13. How badass is it that our No. 7 hitter won the the AL batting title?! I know that's old news; I just love to keep saying it.
  14. I had a feeling this was going to come back and bite them in the ass. Just like the White Sox turd who brought up the cheating scandal. Cora knew it too. Don't give the Astros any reason to want to push your shit in, because they can and they will.
  15. It doesn't "go wrong" if a missed call is in favor of your team. In a situation where the players are very highly skilled and the teams are evenly matched, very small differences affect the outcome. I would prefer that the outcome matches the performance of the players, not missed calls.
  16. Vision.
  17. Not me. A strike is a strike and a ball is a ball, period. Missed calls fuck up the game. If a pitcher throws a strike that just barely catches the edge of the strike zone, that's the maximum amount of skill employed and should be called correctly. Same with balls - if a hitter correctly lays off a pitch that is just outside the zone, he should be rewarded for his skill.
  18. I agree, the umps' accuracy rate is pretty amazing. But it also allows us to see incorrect calls, which are just fucking maddening. There were what, 23, wrong calls last night? That's unacceptable.
  19. Okay, I have to ask (again) - is this real?
  20. Meteor, plz.
  21. He likes geopolitics.
  22. Yeah, that would be great.
  23. Well it's not getting here soon enough. Hell, they project the strike zone into millions of living rooms every day. Why not pipe it up to the press box and call the balls and strikes down to the ump every pitch. Get it called accurately or GTFO.
  24. I don't think it's an actual conspiracy or that other teams are buying refs or whatever. I do think there may be some anti-Texas bias that finds its way into officiating. It's hard to argue with that chart. What? We're just that poorly coached, undisciplined and actually committed all of those penalties and the other teams we played are not? Just not feasible. The other thing that should be considered, though, is not just officials' incompetence, but also the skill of the other team in hiding their fouls. We can see it on TV and replay with different angles and speeds. The refs are seeing it once, from one angle and at real time speed. Players are being coached to cheat in a way that is difficult or impossible for officials to see that they are cheating.
