  1. I, for one, am pro-thread on this subject. I welcome the discussion around people being afraid of people of other races and feeling that they need cops to protect them from them. I don't expect any societal change whatsoever to come from this thread, but given how society (aside from college campuses) is prone to deflect conversations like this because it makes them feel uncomfortable, I think this is a good place for it. I suppose this thread has about the same purpose as any other thread on SurlyHorns or its predecessors, to discuss a topic that you normally wouldn't have someone else to discuss it with at this particular moment, so you come here to do it.
  2. This is partially why I'm picking Warriors in 6. Because they run an offense and are healthy now. The Jazz may have had a "great" defense but ran a Shaka Smart offense. Pass the ball around the perimeter until somebody gathered enough courage to take their man one-on-one. And then if you miss watch Gobert follow up soft or get boxed out repeatedly. Draymond ain't playing that soft shit, and the Rockets will actually have to defend a whole floor. We'll see...
  3. Loma vs. Linares this weekend. They're really pushing Linares as a threat to Loma, personally I don't think anybody within a couple of divisions can challenge him except Mikey. Linares has fast hands and looks pretty athletic in the ring but has been in some firefights with B+ level fighters in England. Loma is no B+ fighter.
  4. Many HBO shows here, but as much as I love The Wire, only a couple of versions were good, would've rather skipped the intro many times. The Sopranos, The Leftovers S2, Game of Thrones, all of them solid. Sanford & Son I'll never forget, but otherwise damn y'all are old. Bc nobody likes the 90s.... and this song gets stuck in my head every few months...
  5. Lmao. Surly has evolved to Vic jokes en espanol. I like it.
  6. Not to mention, with all this talk of hesitance to give him the Super Max with his history of injuries, is Jordan willing to spend that kind of money on a guy who we aren't sure will play for the majority of his next contract? Wouldn't they take that into account too?
  7. I was wondering what the hate for this kid was about. Had never seen him fight. He looked to have fast hands and be pretty conventional, ala Mikey Garcia, nothing too flashy nor devastating power. His post-fight interview was pretty normal too, aside from calling out Tank, who he's 2 or 3 years away from fighting.
  8. Fuckin' roasting was a legit extracurricular activity in Houston too. Somebody told me I looked like Sabonis when I played basketball in middle school and I never lived it down. In all seriousness that one bystander that stays quiet is important. It always stuck out to me the few times somebody in the group (especially somebody with clout) would step in and redirect bc the target was taking it too harshly. More people gotta raise kids like that. Interesting topic to make an episode about.
  9. I thought I was gonna be the same way, but my basketball fandom came back. LeBron is playing too damn well to pass up, he's really staking his claim as the clear-cut #2 in history. Watching the Rockets inch closer and closer to collapse is also riveting enough for me to pay attention. Plus Joe Ingles is a cheeky bastard and I can't get enough of him.
  10. It really is funny. It's like if someone asked about the benefits of moving to Austin and everybody started saying how great it can be and how much it has changed for the better but then a conversation about living in Kyle actually broke out.
  11. Because I trust our front office to turn an actual Top 10 pick into a star. We haven't had one of those in decades. But I also wonder about the market, if I have the market wrong then of course you go get multiple first-rounders, multiple all-stars and ownership stakes in another franchise, but it was only a month ago that "rumors" were having it that the market for Kawhi wasn't as strong as you would think (for a Top 3 guy). If we can get Tatum or Brown from the Celtics, of course I want that, but not if they don't come with a lottery pick. I'd rather take Saric and draft our own lottery guy. The overall value to me would be higher.
  12. Saric and a 1st-rounder (Lottery only) would work for me. Throw in whoever and get Pau off the books. Saric is a guy who would thrive in our system with his IQ and well-rounded game. Shit get Belinelli back here too.
  13. It's been a stickler point for me since I grew up inside the 610 loop, but the answer seems to be the same to both "should I live in Houston" and "should I live in San Antonio", it seems like a NO if you respond "sure, move to The Woodlands, quick!" or "sure, move to Blanco!" My mom lived in Blanco for years, and that's even less like San Antonio than the Woodlands is to Houston. Blanco is a hill country town out in the brush, San Antonio is a city.

    Vinyl

Think I might do this, if only for the Clipse - Lord Willin' release. Great Southern Hip-Hop debut. Got into vinyl about a year ago and have about 15-20 sitting at home with my little setup. I still enjoy the physical manifestation of albums/artwork/booklets. I'm too old to be putting up posters n shit but getting handed down my dad's The Beatles (white album) with the poster inside and then finding a Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' with a poster/booklet inside was pretty cool. Makes me feel like a kid opening the CD case to read the lyric booklet.
  15. It's not as easy as it seems, and there aren't. San Antonio suffers a bit from the Hispanic culture just like the Valley does, I lived in the Valley at 23-24 and it was terrible. Everybody seemed to be married or with kids, at that young ass age. Moved myself back to Austin and it's a 180. San Antonio is much more like the RGV than Austin, although it is slowly changing so I hear (gentrification, etc.). I have a friend that was just telling me how much she misses San Antonio "hip bars", especially off of St. Mary's (rd, ave, st. whatever), but she also just moved back to Austin bc there's shit to do in SA, so there's some cognitive dissonance there.
  16. So we're going there huh? Weed doesn't replace purpose in life, because there is no purpose in life. When you "find" your purpose in life it's still you rationalizing your time on this earth and how you choose to spend it. We all are born, exist, and then die. The purpose you claim for yourself won't stop this cycle, it'll just make you feel better for having endured it. Holton Hill. There I'm on subject.
  17. Kawhi ain't talking about shit. "Sources" and unnamed "League execs" are talkin bout practice. It's bullshit.
  18. His daddy needs to worry about his DWI. If his daddy's a dipshit and raised a dipshit, then the Browns deserve exactly what's coming to them after drafting two dipshits from dipshit families.
  19. We're staying at a hostel in Roma. I'm a single dude just trying to see something new on the cheap. Apparently the tacos and bars are right out the front door though so that's as convenient as can be for post-museum/site evenings.
  20. + rep. I'm going that weekend too, Saturday - Tuesday. It'll be my first time but the buddy I'm going with has been a few times so he's letting me handle itinerary. Sounds like I gotta do the Anthro museum, really want to take a day for Teotihuacan too. Seems like it'll be busy as shit but I'm extremely excited.
  21. I honestly took a lot of pride from this roster. They weren't assembled to be led by LaMarcus, but I was very proud of how hard they played given their limitations. I don't hold that against any of them. And I completely and fully trust in PATFO to re-tool the roster if for some reason we have to play next season without Kawhi. The team was built for him, if he's not there we will build around LMA for the next 3-4 years. I don't foresee us playing a sequel next year because this year's version was never meant to be. also really conflicted with Kyle. He's unplayable in many situations and still prone to shitty shooting streaks, but if he doesn't have to start, is the 3/4 on the bench roster and is affordable and not taking away from us adding other talent, I'd resign. Having guys like Manu Kyle and Patty coming off the bench (where they should be) is a huge advantage, hell even with Pau. Bench units aren't as cohesive as ours can be, and having that many passers on the bench is invaluable, as we learned in 2014. The key is to make sure they aren't having to play against starters. Oh and I see Derrick White joining us next year for Brandon Paul's spot. I don't think he's going to wait much longer.
  22. I'd be very surprised if Danny left and got more money. I could see him signing for a similar deal, but if he gave up 2-4 million a year (if I'm remembering his worth right when we resigned) 3 years ago, I don't see how he's improved (or even not regressed) since then. His value seems about the same, and looking back over the extension, $10 mil/year seems about the right rate considering what we got out of him. For the first time since before the championship he fell out of graces with Pop this year and was benched, maybe the team chemistry and the types of shots he gets changes with Kawhi int he mix, but maybe not.
