  1. For something that was intended as a joke (i.e. my comment about how many non-native Texans live in Austin) I apparently struck a nerve. For the record: (1) yes, born and raised in Texas; (2) yes, live in Austin now (since 2000) after previously living in Houston and Dallas (and Austin for three years in the 80s); and (3) there is nothing inherently wrong with the non-natives living in Austin, other than that Austin is overcrowded in general, regardless of the prior geographic location of current residents. If you are really that touchy, maybe you should stick to the Aggie boards.
  2. Awful. Terrible. Never... Oh, wait. Except Brotherton’s Brisket Grilled Cheese
  3. It’s Austin. Actual Texans are outnumbered by transplanted Californians.
  4. So I’ve lived in Houston and Dallas, and now live in Austin. Get back to Houston and Dallas fairly often and eat out, so I try to keep up with the food scenes. No question that Dallas and Houston > Austin. I can’t say that Dallas is better than Houston for food, but don’t argue with someone making that determination either.
  5. Killen’s STQ perfect combination of outstanding steaks and smoked meat. The beef rib is an ender.

Value-wise, hard to beat Tomahawk Tuesday at Fleming’s (go to the one at the Domain — better service). Share a 35-oz Tomahawk, plus you get 2 full size salads, 2 full sides and 2 desserts for $120.
  7. I have it, and it generally does not save a lot of time. On the other hand, it has been very nice a few times in Austin early in the morning when the TSA line is stretched back to the Southwest counter, and a few times in other cities.
  8. Except that it was in Waco...
  9. Saturday Night’s Alright
  10. Yes, though, by Utah law, pours are regulated by a dispensing machine and limited to 1 1/2 oz.
  11. I like to be tied to my pit by a wifi connection on my phone while I am inside watching football in the A/C, not worried about temp control. And pops, I agree that Egg/Komodo styles are great. And by no means am I dissing stick burners. They are great, and make great barbeque. I just like the convenience and versatility of my Traeger [or insert other pellet smoker name here]
  12. Is one of those 3 better than the others? The Le Cran is their premium.
  13. I have had a Traeger for several years, after using an offset. Personally, I will never go back. I'm lazy, so I can get up, set the temp, put on the brisket (or whatever), and go back to bed. For those that say you can't get enough smoke, I disagree, especially if you know how to use it. It did take me a while, but that's no different than tuning in any other smoker and understanding how to use the smoker. It's also great for doing a smoke/reverse sear on a steak, or doing a quick smoke on anything else.
  14. I I agree as far as getting to the gate (TSA lines are generally short) The old Austin Mueller was close, easy to park, and easy to get to the gates. It was awful The airport is still a crowded piece of crap. I flying in/out about 4x per year.
  15. I will say that the Nashville airport is complete crap. Awful gate areas, awful food/bar choices if you have to wait. They are renovating, but it's like 3 years away until finished.
  16. Wish I was in Denver right now. 96 in Austin at 7:00 It is good stuff
  17. Yeah. I fly out fairly often. It seems to be about half, and depends on whether they get help with luggage. I always tip something, more if they help with luggage. Oh, I use Park & Zoom
  18. I'm all about grower's champagne and small production, but it can be hard to find. Where can you get Bereche?

    Steak

I agree on the sides -- it's nice that a steakhouse includes 50 cents worth of potatoes instead of charging $10. FYI -- the Fleming's at the Domain is much better than the one downtown IMO
  20. I was being sarcastic...Always should tip the drivers.
  21. 2008 Dom. They often have it at Costco (or any good liquor store like Total Wine). 2009 is good, but the 2008 is special. Great vintage. If you don’t want tp play $180, I’d go with Ruinart ($70-ish). Check Total Wine.
