  1. which of you ranger nerds wants to buy high on bradford?
  2. that's why i used the word "basically".
  3. i've been on these boards for 25 years. this is not "the internet", and should never be dismissed as that, especially to excuse or allow what might be labeled "typical and unavoidable online bullying". this is not elon's twitter. this is not reddit. this is a community, and always has been. i know many of you in real life. some i knew before and separately from these sites, and others since. i've met a whole bunch more out in the world just once or twice. i've met some of you for lunch, a beer, scored coke for one of you, and connected another of you with a midget for a bachelor party in vegas. rip donny. i am friends with derka. not "friendly", friends. i knew he and bob had been meeting and working on things, and i thought that was great of bob to do, and i know derka appreciated it. i did not become friends with derka to help him through his mental issues, i became friends with him because i like him and we have a lot in common and i enjoy talking sports and tv shows with him. we text most every day. i've texted with his mom, and she is a wonderful and supportive human being. happy birthday, betsy. derka gets worked up here, like others do at home, a sporting event, a bar, or a grocery store. everyone has their outlets. that's who he is, and if you don't think he's worked hard and gotten a shit-ton better over the years, you haven't been paying attention. derka has an issue letting things go and settling back down from a worked-up state. he'd be the first to admit this. he has bitten his tongue, so to speak, dozens, if not hundreds of times, when people would antagonize him. it's bullshit it was happening to begin with, but he was doing his best not to exacerbate the issue. what you've seen from him on this site is not perfect, but it was the best he could do, and i consider it admirable. again, i'm his friend, so i am a biased commenter here. there's nothing about this situation that doesn't suck. i think most of us are on the same page on that. surly is not groupthink. it's not an echo chamber. even the cloak room isn't that way, though it's often characterized as such. anyone who says that hasn't been over there in several years. there are lots of opinions, lots of discussions, and lots of characters that fill out this community. but there's only one derka. immamac is trying to change that, and i disagree mightily with this decision. it also sucked that it was made in advance, which makes this even more inexcusable. flying off the handle and making a rash decision at least could be understood, if not justified. yes, it is his decision to make, no one is disputing whether he has that ability. yes, it sucks that derka and bob were on the road to recovery, and immamac stepped in and reversed that progress. ironically, this type of reversal is exactly the type of thing that drives derka over the edge. he jumped through the hoops, he did the work, he shared himself, he was honest and self-deprecating about it. and now he's told no, it's easier just to rid ourselves of you. someone upthread called derka a cancer. i know because i negged him. it's probably my 2nd or 3rd ever neg-rep and i stand by it. cancer needs to be removed to make the body stronger. that's not what's happening here. if derka is gone for good, it will make things worse. worse for him and worse for this community. from reading through this thread, it's pretty obvious that i'm not alone in this opinion. a few pages ago, immamac said that sometimes derka would get banned, and he would get pm's asking for him to be reinstated, because derka had asked people to do this. as someone who has sent one of those pm's, i can say i was not asked to do so. if you know derka at all, you would know he doesn't go around begging others to fight his battles. shit, how could anyone not know this? i saw what happened and sent those messages on my own accord, because while i don't always do what's right, i always know what's right. and this is not right. reinstate him. it's what's right.
  4. it's hard to evaluate something like a screenplay 50+ years after it came out, because it inspired so many movies you've seen since. it's like the stupid argument people get into about pulp fiction and how telling a story out-of-sequence isn't that special (duh, because pulp fiction basically invented it). chinatown used twists and turns in ways that were revolutionary at the time, and we learn a lot about jake - both who he is and how he got that way - through his actions and his relationships, which is another thing that wasn't really done in in the 50's and 60's. we were coming off decades full of westerns, musicals, and plays-turned-movies, so original screenplays (and many adapted from books) like this were hard to come by. godfathers, the sting, chinatown, the conversation, the early 70's all the way up through president's men and jaws really changed hollywood. go read "easy riders, raging bulls" if you want more insight. that decade was dark and dingy and inspired the gritty and cool movies of the 90's, my favorite movie decade. i've seen this movie 25+ times and i notice something new every time.
  5. gonna be honest i do not love the royals pick. i do like the marlins pick.
  6. funny, i actually just noticed that my original post was on may 3rd and this comes out on may 3rd so it literally was a year. another fun fact, on may 2nd, i'm seeing seinfeld, gaffigan, maniscalco, and bargatze at the hollywood bowl.
  7. only took an extra year to iron out the kinks.
  8. like we have a choice.
  9. wait. there were games in korea?
  10. this sounds like something we would probably do.
  11. i already got my max bet in at +201 and now it's down to +141. i can re-max out my bet any time the odds move.
  12. our other league is 6pm pt tomorrow, so we'll have to work around that.
  13. correa’s free agency was a colossal goatfuck.
  14. this shit right here. i'm tired of reading stories about the country's collective amnesia about the trump presidency. i remember it. pepperidge farms remembers it.
  15. something something texas longhorn national champs?
  16. a parent going through mental difficulty? it’s happening right now.
  17. there's a large group of americans who have identified as (r) for a long time, probably because their parents were, and have been so turned off by politics (ironically, because of people like trump), that they are purposely disinterested and disengaged. so when they vote (r), they don't even have to hold their nose. they purposely don't follow it, they don't talk politics with their friends, they distract themselves with family, kids, reality tv, whatever, and haven't paid attention in 10-15+ years. there's no possible way 75mm people know what trump is all about and are like, cool, i'll pick him. no fucking way.
  18. context or not, the bloodbath situation really helped, and here's why. trump's rallies have been batshit cult 1930's germany style for months now, but nobody was reporting about it. there was actually more reporting on why it wasn't getting reported more, but hardly anyone was talking about it. i even posted a longcat twitter thread (on here or on the downfall thread) weeks ago listing out and showing video of the 16 things he does at every rally. and everyone was like, "shit, if people could just see how crazy this really is, it would help the cause." well now that he said bloodbath, it's become a story. it snatched up 2-3 cycles and it's still alive. whether he meant the auto industry or not is 100% immaterial. we finally broke through and have msm talking about it and it's all over twitter, and finally gotten picked up by the non-msnbc's of the world. now more reporters will suck it up and go to rallies to find the next "bloodbath" moment. and captain dipshit is actually enjoying the extra publicity, and going on his wacko shows and discussing it more - as a feature, not a glitch, because trump doesn't ever make a gaffe. so he's actually fueling the fire, and likely thinking up his next bloodbath moment. he's whipping his base into a frenzy, which is what he does. they get more passionate, but these are the same people at the rallies again and again, and they're much smaller, and in off-brand towns. and with any luck, it will continue like this for the next 7 months. since the sotu, the trending has been really fucking strong in the direction we need it to be. shit, they're not even talking about him being a doddering old man shuffling around the basement anymore. they're running stories about him being hopped up on something. all because he didn't appear old and stumbling which somehow didn't match up against the woodward-and-bernstein-style crack investigative journalism researched by (checks notes) the same hacks that ran with the senile-old-man narrative the past 6 months. they even got an incidental assist from snl. i felt good in october. i feel great in march. let's fucking go.
