  1. That's an amazing analogy. I can really relate to that. All my life I had such a problem rationalizing the questions I had about religion vs. what I believed in a spiritual sense. I had so intertwined my self constructed theory in which I had to "believe" everything that my religion taught me in order to be spiritual, that I doubted everything, believed nothing, and was unable to have a relationship with a higher power. The concept of a god of my own understanding was such a freeing notion for me. I had always felt most spiritual when I was "the guy fishing". However, if you put me in a church pew listening to a sermon about water turning to wine or seven loaves of Sunbeam and a few mullet feeding 1000's, all that evaporated. To me, having a conscious relationship with my higher power is an equivalent or greater miracle that the obsession to drink was lifted from me. I now enjoy "church" and can take the messages I need for my life and leave the rest with no guilt or shame. Thank you so much for sharing that.
  2. I wouldn't say I "enjoyed" it, but hey....you do you. I will say it was a far better experience than all these stories up-thread about stitches, pain, swelling, and being stove up for days. Walk in, walk out, and drive yourself back to the office or home. Take it easy on the running or workouts for a few days and put it behind you.
  3. So cidercade or Cybercade Sunday is where the next mass shooting will take place.......Good to know.
  4. There are a large number of 1903 shooters that have low serial number guns who won’t shoot higher pressure rounds due to some strength differences in the bolt mechanism in the early vs. later productions. To stay on the safe side many of those with low number 1903s will not shoot higher pressure loads. There’s some debate about this but if one wants to be cautious and not risk damage to the gun or person, it’s a reasonable compromise to shoot the clones of the original M2 ball Ammo. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle but since the Ammo is there, anyone who wants to be careful has an option. I’ve got one of the CMP Garands they they rebuilt and added the spacer block In order to convert to .308 . I don’t know if they still sell them, but it was a popular option for people who wanted a shooter and not a collectible back years ago.
  5. Excellent points. Several major mfgs have now started making Garand specific loads for the 30-06 to mimic the old M2 Ball ammo. For those military buffs who want to shoot their Garands, that's an excellent and safe option. The CMP also sells a line of new production M2 ball from Creedmoor Sports that are used by a lot of Garand competition shooters who don't reload their own. If someone wants to shoot their Garand, its not a problem any more and can be done without risk to the rifle. (Same goes for 1903 shooters)
  6. My partner just got a new Howa Mini-Action 6.5 Grendel with a 20" barrel. Threaded, synthetic stock, with a box mag. Light, short, smooth action.......helluva truck gun. I've had nothing but good luck with Howa for great performance in a lower priced bolt gun and that's why he went that route. He's planning on running a can on it from a blind since 6.5 Grendel suppresses well, but it'll be a great ride around gun without it. Would also make an outstanding rifle for a kid or smaller framed shooter.
  7. Spend about 10 minutes on YouTube and you could have that M-N bolt reassembled in no time. Once you do......3 cinder blocks, an old blanket and some string will work for safely test firing it if you are so inclined.
  8. That quilt is awesome.
  9. I think he could get everything on this board and much more through attending AA meetings and good sponsorship. Have you considered offering to accompany him to an open meeting if he’s reluctant to go alone? He may not be. Whatever you can do to just be an open ear and comfortable safe confidant is all it takes. It sounds to me like he’s very lucky to have you as a friend/Co-worker.
  10. 1903’s are very expensive now. Good luck sub $1000.00 Mosin are still plentiful- Not sub $100 anymore but still affordable shooters. Mausers are pricey- Russian capture rifles are less expensive but still 2-3x a Mosin. Carancos are cheap but I’d be carful with them. Some aren’t reliable with moderns Ammo and can be dangerous. You need to have them verified as shootable by someone with knowledge. There are some Swiss and Swede rifles out there that are cool and affordable. Enfields are pricy like Mausers but you can sneak up on a deal now and then. Arisaka bargains are still out there. Garands and M1 Carbines are expensive and getting worse but are plentiful on the market. Tons of rifles (all of the above) have been sporterized and those can be cheap but don’t have the collector and no longer have the military feel / interest. Take the steps to be CMP buyer eligible and order a Garand for the boy. May take some time but you’ll get one eventually and cheaper than the open market. Have to jump through some hoops but it’s worth it for sure.
  11. Just set the machines to have a 5% positivity rates.... sort of like a slot machine payout and society will have moved on to the next crisis of the day before anyone figures it out. if anyone calls bullshit on the results, just say that your widget is so far advanced that it’s picking up positives no other testing can and invalidating other method’s negatives. a PowerPoint, some smoke and a few mirrors and you have a revolutionary device.
  12. “Look Elizabeth, we know you were a week away from revolutionizing medicine and all these idiots just don’t understand brilliance when they see it, but we’re going to need you to act like.......”
  13. She wouldn’t waste time with a finger prick. It would be a used airport metal detector that you walked through for a text. Some Xmas lights and crepe paper to redecorate it and you have a $20b market valuation.
  14. Convincing a narcissist to use a mental defect defense would be a fascinating exercise in reverse manipulation. She would have to be convinced that she can outsmart the prosecutor and jury by “faking” being a nutcase, when in fact she is. She’ll never take the stand but if she did that testimony and cross would be amazing to see.
  15. ^^^ This guy...... he gets it. Spot on. In the depths of anxiety it can be difficult, but it is a relief. Being of service consistently is any fashion Is a sure fire way to help ward off anxiety in the first place. Making it a habit will provide some measure of insulation. Volunteering at a food bank, soup kitchen, or animal shelter on the regular will do a world of good. Nothing beats working with other drunks, but there are countless ways to be of service.
  16. AA Workshop - Pushing Forward To Your New Life AA Workshop - Hope for Tomorrow Living in the Moment The Basics of Awakening, Again Those are a few I have flagged on AudioJoy. ( I really like that app and also add SoberCast podcast for some variety. ) I'm not sure if they are searchable by those titles elsewhere or those titles are specific to AudioJoy. Pretty much anything from him is beneficial for me.
  17. @ztejas I get it. It sucks. I've always trended toward anxiety...sometime debilitating. Since becoming sober, one of my crutches I lean on to help me (besides all the other things you are rightfully doing) is to listen to recordings of Sandy Beach talking about emotional sobriety and more importantly, recognizing the tape I play in my mind and the story my ego creates. Once I am reminded of what I'm doing, it is easier to get a reset and some relief. He really helps me boil things down. AudioJoy is an app that has a lot of his talks and even some of his workshops. He really helps me. Anyway....maybe that's something to put in your arsenal. Keep doing what you are doing. It does pass. God speed.
  18. To me, the language of the heart is anything that is gut level honest about sharing (or hearing.... as Bear said) our common experience, strength, and hope. It's being open and vulnerable and knowing I need you and you need me....without my ego or self-centered mind getting in the way.
  19. Investigative and arresting bullshit aside....... The vests in that video make me laugh. Those badasses look like 400lb women trying to wear a training bra. There is more fat exposed than covered - at least one didn't appear it could even be fastened.
  20. I had to laugh! Those bean fields are a goose magnet, but that's unforgiving terrain when it freezes. Never thought I'd miss swatting mosquitoes and sweating my balls off in a marsh but I did.
  21. Worst I ever had was hunting a frozen soybean field. Laying down and took two quick shots straight up or maybe even a bit backward on a high flying specklebelly with 3 1/2’s. Hard ground underneath, hard recoil from on top and a bad position with the butt took its toll.
  22. I only collect that which shoots, but I love browsing the auctions and shops that have the non-weapon stuff. Very interesting.
  23. Damn.......That's a lot to "lean into". Thanks for that phrasing and the lesson on how you applied it. Sounds like your God is the same one with whom I try to maintain contact. The grace is there to to help us navigate the human experience; not to give us a free pass to avoid that human experience.
  24. 2020.......in any language you choose.
  25. I think that's a similar genetic code which makes Auodad so wary. God built them survive north African cats so that's why they seem to react as if a .270 in the shoulder is a welcome relief to what they think was trying to "get them". And that's where the comparison stops - because as delicious as Axis are, Auodad....well, they aren't "delicious".
