  1. I tried to score him as well, and I stopped at a shit-load. That’s a beautiful buck.

  3. Listening to CB chatter and Bruce Williams on am radio were my podcasts of the 70's and 80's. Miles flew by having that entertainment.
  4. People couldn't care less that I stopped drinking, other than those who were impacted by it and those select people are thrilled. Years later, I still have reasonably close social acquaintances who haven't even noticed. The fact of the matter is that they weren't paying attention to my drinking before, and still aren't - in spite of my ego telling me that everyone is always watching me, judging me, and monitoring my every move. The only people who have every really said anything were a couple of other alcoholics who have come to me asking how I stopped and wanting me to help them. I've come to believe through experience that the only people who judge or monitor others' drinking in a social setting are (as Bear said) problem drinkers or alcoholics who are using others as a measuring stick; Either...."I drink like them and they aren't a drunk so I'm not either." or "I don't drink as much as them so I'm OK." Rationalization at its finest. Once we realize that we aren't the center of the universe and the focus of all attention and thought, the anxiety and self consciousness lifts, both about drinking and the 1000 other things on which we think there is a spotlight in our magnifying mind.
  5. I hunted in Pike County, IL about 15 years ago and seeing deer walking in a field with a softball sized turnip in their mouth with the greens hanging down tripped me out. That image is one of the most prominent memories that I hold from that hunt. Almost all of the cash crops had a 30-50 yard wide strip of turnips planted along the outer perimeter circling the entire field.
  6. @InkaUtexas Glad you stopped by. When I talk to people about their drinking, its very important that we (that person and I) differentiate between heavy drinking, problem drinking, frequent drinking and alcoholic drinking. The "normal" drinker (even if they have been going at it hard for some period of time) can moderate or stop all together when given sufficient reason, but here is where the rubber meets the road.....they can do so and maintain their sanity and happiness. Those of us that are real deal alcoholics may be able to moderate or stop, but we are literally and figuratively white knuckling the process and feel like our skin is peeling off. Eventually the fingernails against the chalkboard of life becomes unbearable and we drink again. Even moderation is painful, because we have an allergy that demands another drink once we take even one. Denying ourselves additional drinks after the moderation threshold is met is painful. That's what you'll find described in more detail among the pages of the Big Book, along with how we recover from what seems like a hopeless state. Hopefully you can stop or moderate as you see fit and not be in pain while doing so. If not, pull up a chair and take a load off. We've got a good deal going here as well.
  7. I believe this is correct. My understanding is that as the starches get cooked out pf the roux at the darkest stages, there is nothing capturing the oil and holding it in the "solution". Affects appearance and mouth feel if it allowed to settle and separate, but not the flavor and isn't apparent when stirred and eaten relatively quickly. The oil has done it's job to impart flavor and color in the browning, but leaves the party if it goes beyond that.
  8. Brush them with a light coating of yellow mustard before putting them in a paper bag filled with corn meal.....shaking to coat Mustard doesn't come through as a taste, but does an excellent job of holding just the right amount of cornmeal on the legs, and just works somehow to bring out the flavor. Same thing for fried catfish. It just works and you won't ever cornmeal fry without it.
  9. Yeah - Middle of the 19th century, in-home shooting parlors were today's equivalent of media rooms, swimming pools, or outdoor kitchens for the Surly 1%.
  10. Best skinning fail I ever witnessed was a guy who decided he was smarter than everyone and was going to pull off the hide with his truck. Tied off to his hitch and proceeded to pull a entire skinning rack over onto his truck. In the time it took him to create and then fix his cluster fuck, multiple deer were skinned and quartered on the adjacent rack.
  11. I quarter a lot of deer and never gut them, especially when it is cooler. Skin, back straps, hams, then take tenderloins out from the back, and move on.
  12. Sheppard's is just as convenient. One block behind and one block east of their taxidermy shop - (and those are small blocks in Llano). You can see it from the highway just behind Sonic. I've done business with Brian Miiller for over 40 years and with the Sheppards for 10-15 years. I'm sorry to see Brian go. I went in and talked to him 2-3 weeks ago and he was visibly upset and conflicted about the decision, but knew it was what he had to do. His working with the Sheppards was the only endorsement I needed to give them a try. The meat I've picked up from bow season was done well, packaged properly, and reasonably priced. I'd give them a try if you are used to Miillers.
  13. Speaking of processing, Miiller's Meats in Llano is out of the processing business. Brian Miiller was doing about 2k game animals a year, but their commercial business has taken off to the point that the game income wasn't worth the hassle. Miiller's did a great job for 40+ years, but all things come to an end I guess. Sheppard's Taxidermy (across from Coopers) bought some of Miiller's equipment, hired his venison sausage guy, and has gone into the processing business using Miiller's recipes and getting their pork and fat from them as well. Early results have been good.
  14. Who in the fuck is the head coach at Indiana- he seems to have completed all of his “work in progress” projects and appears to be able to extract talent and develop players. Urban, then virtually anyone who hasn’t used COVID and new coaches as an excuse
  15. Sorry- Model 1903 Springfield .30 Gov’t ‘06 1st WW, replaced by garand in mid ‘30’s but still saw action in II and other conflicts through mid-century.
  16. Got to Texas last night - bright moon. Lots of stars . Pretty slow morning deer wise . I could hear the grey ducks buzzing me while pond hopping before daylight. Love that sound. nice to be back.
  17. If there was ever a time to get a good value on a trade and buy, it’s right now. Any gun shop would love to swap with you and have you put a few bucks into the deal- provided they have inventory. They know they could mark up and resell the Taurus in a few days or hours. You could also sell it locally in a private sale and then go shopping. If a shop has what you want through, a trade and buy would be faster and less hassle.
  18. Be careful with Royal Tiger Imports (RTI). They’re not know for their integrity with regard to firearm condition. I’m in the trenches all the time looking for carbines and garands, along with ‘03 bolt guns and you can get a much better historical piece for the same money as an RTI piece of crap purported to be good to excellent. If you want a period piece, expect to pay $800-$1200. If you want a daily shooter to bag around or modify, you can buy a modern reproduction for less. buyer be ware for sure with RTI,
  19. Wandering eye jokes anyone? This one is so easy it takes the fun and subtlety out of it.
  20. I read this story last night. Very interesting and amazing the interwebs haven't identified him. DNA matches will catch up eventually, but it's odd that someone can be that anonymous in today's world.
  21. If you like CZ75 platforms, and want to pick up something on a tighter budget but with higher dollar value.....look at EAA Tangfolio lines. Everything from carry to race guns. Excellent value for the money. Available in 9, 45, and 10mm depending on model.
  22. Big difference between a full sized 9mm and a 10mm. I'm a 10mm whore and love the round, but would not suggest it as something with which to compare / contrast with a 9mm for home defense use. Hammer vs. sledge hammer. Everyone needs a sledgehammer, but it isn't going to do you much good when you need to drive just one nail. Picking the right tool for the job is over half of the battle and whatever quality full sized 9 that feels good, you can shoot well, and you can find in stock is the right answer. Sig, M&P, Glock, H&K, Walther, CZ just to name a few. Get one that feels right and that you enjoy shooting. Then by the 10mm for shits and giggles.
  23. If you want a more controllable / accurate way to spend money on ammo, a binary trigger is your huckleberry.
  24. The rest of the big 12 paid okst to throw this game in order to keep Herman around and Herman is still losing.
  25. LaxAmmo.com just dropped 62 1000 round cans of 9mm reman fmj for $579 Their reloads are top notch
