Sorry to continue the derail regarding B-24s, Ploesti, etc. I thought some might find it interesting that the 376th bomb group donated all of their records to the Briscoe Center at UT. I learned this researching my great-great uncle's plane. He was a tail gunner and was KIA over Budapest on July 2, 1944. https://briscoecenter.org/support/endowments/376th-endowed-internship/ Story from survivor of his plane: https://www.armyaircorps-376bg.com/kesler_earl_440702.html

I dated a French Tunisian girl. It was a lot of fun (also great food). Plus, she spoke four languages and was great fun and help to travel around. I remember her on the phone with her sister speaking French/Arabic, talking to me in English, then giving Spanish tourists directions in Spanish in Bordeaux all within about 30 seconds. She told me she learned Spanish by listening to Shakira while going to grad school in Mexico, of all things, and English by taking English lectured college classes in France. Agree that mixing of cultures is the best thing in the world and it has greatly influenced my life experiences for the better. Honestly can't imagine my life without it. Wish others would get with the fucking program. -
Got back late last week from my 4th annual elk trip to a ranch in Utah which is basically an elk lease for a group of friends and I. Evening before opening morning we watched a nice 6x6 (see photo below) chase off a rag horn and spike away from his cows at about 600 yards. Bugling was crazy opening morning. Sounded like a bull every few hundred yards. Buddies got two nice 6x6s that morning in different drainages. I saw about 10 spikes and 20 cows and one nice bull that appeared just below the rising sun, so I couldn't find him in my scope. They mostly stopped bugling after opening morning. The next day, I ended up getting a smaller 4x5 with a Napoleon complex that was a 5x5 that had broken his main beam. I had already passed on a rag horn and spike earlier in the morning. The bull bugled at us from a thicket of aspen and sounded less than 100 yards away. After he bugled again we could tell what direction he was headed with his cows and ran around the corner of an old logging road and set up for him to cross from another old road. I saw him for all of 1-2 seconds when I pulled the trigger and he continued about 40 yards down hill into the canyon until he went down. The shot was about 95 yards. Interestingly, I shot this bull from almost the exact same spot I shot my bull last year. This year I shot close by down the road I was seated on as opposed to across the canyon. On the third day there was only one hunter remaining hunting for a bull. While he was far away in a heavily timbered canyon, we had a nice 6x6 with a couple of cows and a 4x4 with a bunch of cows walk near the cabin at distance between 150 and 500 yards. Wish I could stay out there longer. Great place to destress. Made a bunch of ossobuco over the weekend by cooking 3 of the 4 shanks. Been eating that all week.

Related to the Riyadh Comedy Festival, just a reminder that the "Seinfeld of Saudi Arabia," Fahad Albutairi went to UT. I used to drink with him at Crown/Posse occasionally. He married Loujain al-Hathloul who was arrested, kidnapped, and tortured for the horrible offense of driving a car as a woman. Then they were further forced to get a divorce afterwards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahad_Albutairi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loujain_al-Hathloul -
Idk if this helps, but there was an article in the Guardian yesterday about it. "US fan ugliness at the Ryder Cup was merely a reflection of Trump’s all-caps America European players were subjected to slurs and crude insults about their families. They were no surprise as public discourse in America has broken down" https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/sep/28/usa-fans-ryder-cup-rory-mcilroy

What a surprise. Scottie just finished tied for first with a 26' birdie putt on 18.

@CleverNickname FYI, if you want to look for water levels nearby, you can use the TWDB GIS site to click on nearby water wells and look at their water elevation (various dates) with reference to their surface location as well as the geologic formation producing water. You can also look at what geologic formations are outcropping nearby using the layer levels to get a feel for where the water might be. https://www3.twdb.texas.gov/apps/WaterDataInteractive/GroundwaterDataViewer

I found out about Notrees for the first time two months ago, on my way to Hobbs, NM from Odessa. But seriously, this is some bullshit.

What a name indeed... Looks like they are trying to pull most of this water from a relatively small area, with many wells near their property lines. This property is in the extreme SW corner of Anderson county. I'd be pissed if I was their neighbor. Sidenote: That area is in the Elkhart-Mount Enterprise fault zone, a zone associated with salt related structures in the East Texas Salt Basin. Due to the faulting and structures, naturally occurring crude oil from deeper reservoirs/shales (Austin Chalk-Eagle Ford-Woodbine) has migrated upwards via faults and filled many of these shallow sands (Queen City-Carrizo-Wilcox) over geologic time. It has since become biodegraded and heavy. There are a few commercial heavy oil fields producing from the Carrizo and Wilcox, but the oil is literally everywhere in this region of Anderson county in some quantity. Water for small local municipalities pump fresh water out of zones in lateral contact with the heavy crude oil. I am nearly positive that these small municipalities and private well operators do not look for organic components (they do what they are required by regulatory agencies). There are highly likely naturally occurring, dangerous, soluble organic compounds (VOCs, BETX) in a lot of the drinking water, at what concentrations, Idk. I guess that's what you get with limiting regulatory requirements. Leopards and all that. In summary, some rural folks may already be fucked. I know I wouldn't drink the water from the faulted areas without sufficient testing for those specific contaminants. -
I think its just him finding them ugly. His golf course just north of Aberdeen has giant windmills just offshore "ruining" his aesthetic.

Yes, Jap Lane in Vidor/Orange County. Looks like its now called Japanese Lane. Story behind the name: http://hirasaki.net/Family_Stories/Kishi_Colony/Kishi.htm The website is of a George Hirasaki from Vidor, now a professor at Rice, who I've gotten to work with. CSB: Back when George was at Shell, he was first boss of my own advisor who I had while at UT. Also, George's brother lived in quarantine with the astronauts from Apollo 11 after getting back from the moon.

He must've been a roadie for Metallica. Heard the same thing.

I hear this in the Betty Blackwell commercial voice. -
I'm assumed he meant sending out alerts locally/statewide like when a cop stubs his toe on the job.

Agreed. Wasn't trying to imply they could. Most of their unconventional resources are gas from tight sandstones and shale, and coal-bed methane.

China produces ~4 million barrels per day, but their demand is much higher. Their largest field, Daqing, was discovered in the 1959 and they continue to operate it to maximize production without major concerns about economics as it is a strategic necessity.

The whole crop growing aspect is complete bullshit. The "fresh" water used for fracking in the Permian is normally about 4,000 ppm to 15,000 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS) and very high in calcium and sulfate. The produced water salinity from Permian oil wells depends on the formation and geographic area, but normally ranges from 80,000 ppm to 190,000 ppm TDS. For reference, most drinking water is under 500 ppm TDS. The vast majority of the water, if not all, is way too saline to use on crops or for livestock, not to mention the dangers of containing dissolved organic molecules from the crude oil.
