  1. I think people fail to realize what we lost on offense from a year ago and just magically thought we would be improved or even equal to where were a year ago. Had Baxter not have gotten hurt, that might have helped hide some things. We are an inside zone/RPO offensive team that can't run inside zone. We lost our identity. We had 2 receivers drafted in the first round, they were replaced by some talented guys but barring a 4.25 40 from Bond, neither will get drafted in the 1st round and Golden will probably be a mid round guy(ie. they aren't as good). We lost the first RB in the draft. We have taken a huge hit in that room, no one can deny. TE is a wash with maybe a slight upgrade which no one predicted. OL is slightly better than last year, I think. Everyone expected Quinn to have a huge year with Heisman numbers, then he got hurt,........again. When healthy, I think he has been better than last year but that is debatable. He still makes some dumb indecisive decision but he hasn't really been healthy outside a couple of games. Regardless, we are in the playoffs, ready to make a run. Our opponents should prepare their anuses.
  2. I think this one is a little different. These discussions rarely happen to a QB in his 3rd year starting. They haven’t happened since Simms was the starting QB. The situations are very similar. This is the best chance Texas is going to have at NC since Colt. Next year is at a minimum a reload. You clearly have a QB that has underperformed expectations and that isn’t up for debate (see top 10 pick predictions and Heisman talk). You have Arch on the bench, who looked excellent in his last start. You can add the media flaming the flames and it’s not hard to see how this discussion has become so heated.
  3. We're on our 3rd and 4th RBs. Would we have that high of a standard if we were on our 3rd QB? Or should Mr. Heisman hopeful first round pick video game cover Dr. Pepper boy maybe pick up his play a little bit?
  4. Pretty sure the preseason plan wasn't grinding games to a close with our 3rd- and 4th-string RB's but it's become a necessity since our preseason Heisman-hopeful QB1 cannot get (or stay) healthy.
  5. And yet Brady could throw the long ball if necessary. Brady also had size Ewers will never have and incredible durability that Ewers has never shown he can have. Jesus, that's pathetic. If the bold is true, then he's even more sensitive than I thought. There wasn't some huge outcry regarding his play last year that I recall. There was clearly a drop-down at QB when he got hurt and Maalik had to take over. There's no chance a healthy Ewers comes close to losing the K-State game for example. We should've lost that one. He was lights-out in the Big 12 title game and for the most part was good against Washington. We just took too long to get going and I was not a fan of the last several plays of that game, either the calls or the execution of the passes. Still, heading into this year it was clear he was a Heisman hopeful QB1 for this team and Arch would take over he inevitably left for the NFL. And the season started well -- and then he got hurt. Again. He's been a shell of himself -- save for some glimpses of greatness vs Florida or a few throws here and there. But our offense is stuck in the mud, especially in the second half. Ewers has not been great in the second half. Probably because he hasn't properly healed.
  6. Quinn is a mind fuck. Thats why this thread is so active. We have a world beater defense, so we automatically say everyone is screwed because we have offensive wizard and QB guru Sark. And to go with his credentials, our donors money whipped a 1.000 rated homegrown #1 overall QB who is in his third season as a starter, has all the pieces around him he needs, and is a heisman contending dr pepper commercial media darling. Season plays out and half the time all that hype makes sense with his wizard throws and pure arm talent, and half the time he looks like hot hammered shit. Not game to game, not half to half, not quarter to quarter. Play to play. Statistically hes nothing more than solidly above average. Trying hard not to be a spoiled fan because the only reason we have these expectations is because so many have ponied up $$$ and brought us back, but its kind of a bitter pill to swallow that we are falling short of a dominant season due to the offense and the QB.
  7. Honestly, he’s not 100%. I think pre injury he was the heisman favorite and probable first qb taken.
  8. I do feel for Quinn. He was so fucking solid vs. Michigan, and deservedly in the early season Heisman talk at the time. Then he comes out on fire vs. UTSA (I feel like 14 of our first 15-16 plays were passes) and was on his way to a 250-300 yard first half. Post-injury he just hasn't been able to find that juice again.
  9. Considering he was an early favorite to be a Heisman Trophy winner and preseason All American and all that I think we can consider his season disappointing.
  10. I was born in the 1960s, did not see any of 60s action, but have a couple of comments: 1. My favorite memory watching football with my dad was when we were sitting in the living room yelling at the TV all game while losing to Alabama in the 1982 CB. We could FEEL the disgust coming from Robert Brewer as he called timeout and went to the sidelines. WE ALL truly genuinely knew 'bama was coming with the blitz and back then teams did not change calls after a timeout. Then the best call of the decade happened, with the QB draw. I believe this is in the top three calls of the 80s and 90s decades, up there with the 90+ yard pass by Major against OU and the Ricky run for the Heisman. I propose a new category, near legend. Brewer is near legend. If he doesn't call TO that call never happens. I remember only one game Brewer lost, a game against SMU, when SMU had that lucky pass that bounced off our DB and into a receiver's hands, resulting in about a 70 yard TD pass. I think Jitter Fields was on the field for that play and the infamous 1984 CB. Ponies were lucky, lucky that game. 2. Two QBs who could have completely changed the game, had the chemistry been there with wide receivers a. Rick McIvor. Rick had the strongest arm in Texas history. I saw him in person against the Ags one year in Austin. We were losing, Rick drops back, throws about a 60 yard pass in the air it hits the WR in the chest and falls to the ground. We lost the game. Rick had only one game when he somehow got lucky and put it all together, against Aggy in the 1983 game. Plenty of drops whenever Rick played. Did players not practice enough in the 80s? b. Simms. I remember one of those Holiday Bowl losses to Oregon or whomever, when Simms is throwing bullets to receivers in the end zone and they were dropping all of them. The excuse given was the receivers were freshmen. Obviously it improved to some extent, but all most people remember is the game against Colorado, the interception that knocked Cedric Benson and Mike Williams out of the game. I believe there was a fundamental difference that does not exist in today's game. It seems like QBs and WRs are much better at being on the same page, compared to then. I think with the coaching of today, a Simms type player develops much better and wins more games.
  11. In the first game of the year, the Bill Bradley Horns lost (that almost never happens). In the second game, we tied a respectable Houston team. In the third, Darrell Royal puts in a scappy underweight short running QB named James Street. He won twenty in a row and two Natty's before graduating. God Bless Him. Bobby Layne's (way before my time) Wiki page is worth a visit. Holy Fuck! Born in Santa Anna, Texas, Layne grew up on a farm in Coleman County just north of Santa Anna. His father, only 36, died of a heart attack when Layne was eight years old. His mother, Bea, was so destitute, she could not afford to keep the family together. Layne's two sisters stayed with his mother while he was sent to Fort Worth to live with his aunt and uncle, Mimi and Wade Hampton. The Hamptons eventually adopted Layne and moved to Highland Park, Texas, which was then a suburb just north of Dallas. He attended Highland Park High School in University Park. Layne's best friend and football teammate was fellow future hall of famer Doak Walker, the Heisman Trophy winner in 1948 for the SMU Mustangs and a pro teammate with the Detroit Lions. #3 player selected in '48 NFL draft. 3 NFL Championships with Lions. Numerous records in college, some of which stood until Street and Vince came along. And in baseball, one of the best pitchers ever to play at UT. Numerous records finally broken by Burt Hooton and this: Southwest Conference & UT – Most no-hitters, career (2), tied by James Street, Hooton and Greg Swindell His NFL career had some controversy of interest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Layne#References
  12. Quinn is a very good QB, you can see why he was a five star. But yeah he isn't going to be an All-American Heisman Trophy winning kind of guy. Unfortunately. Maybe Manning will.
  13. That's what I think people get so frustrated about. At times, Quinn really looks the part of a Heisman QB. Other times he doesn't. He just has limitations. He still has done a lot for this program,, which deserves respect.
  14. yeah no kidding. people should look up his stats during his Heisman year.
  15. "1 passing TD is all we should expect from a heisman hopeful. we wouldve won if we made 6 fgs instead of 4"
  16. Garrett Gilbert was on some heisman watch lists at one point
  17. based on his performance last year (alabama being the one exception) and this year, he should never have been on any heisman watch lists.
  18. you do 1st half numbers. I said A&M was the perfect Quinn game. Struggled early, Heisman level 2Q, and turned the ball over the 2nd half. Everyone understands Quinn has the potential to be elite. The issue with Quinn is volatility and consistency. You never know what Quinn will show up in a game. You can say that about every quarter. He can be elite at times and absolutely wretched. so not good reads and poor decision making.
  19. He has had a balanced attack his entire time as an OC, dating back to USC, washington and even the bama teams that had a heisman WR. He is methodical about being balanced.
  20. So let me get this straight. I should not expect the third year starter of a team that made the playoffs last year, has an experienced OL with multiple draft picks on it, has multiple great receiving threats, and Sarkisian as a playcaller to perform in a way to where he gets Heisman love? That's the take?
  21. He was the Heisman favorite after Michigan. I think 250 yards is bare minimum to expect of Quinn in each game. He's hit that mark 3 out of 9 times this season. He averaged 290 last year, and is averaging 231 this year. He has regressed big time over the 2nd half of the season. Wishing it away for some people is not changing what other people clearly see.
  22. Don’t be fucking obtuse. Quinn was near the top of the list on any Heisman watch list one could find…Vegas not withstanding. Based on the progress he made over the last few years, that was a completely reasonable line of thinking. Get the fuck out of here with this bullshit.
  23. Ewers was supposed to be a Heisman candidate. He was definitely supposed to play well enough to get to the presentation ceremony. And he was definitely supposed to be a first round pick after this year. None of that has come to fruition and we're to the point where we actually have to worry about the guy coming back next year and ruining our plans with Arch. The fact that we are sitting here with one loss, having made the playoffs, and are in the SEC title game despite all of this is not good for Quinn, imo. He underperformed. Even worse, he solidified himself as "guy with injury concerns".
  24. I think you need to look back to the preseason to understand the general frustration. There were questions about the defense. This was a team expected to win with its offense. Big things were expected out of the OL and the 5 star QB in his 3rd year as a starter, especially the passign game. Now compare that to how the team finished the season. They are winning, because the defense and OL is dominating. The passing game has been the worst aspect of the team (outside of kicking). The last 3 games the passing game has averaged under 200 yards vs suspect pass defenses. The starting QB has given up more pts (14) than the defense (10). Of course, people are questioning the QB. Any rational person would at least wonder what a 5 star QB that adds to the running game would do for the team. The one thing this team needs is consistent QB play. That is one thing Quinn has proven he cannot give the team. A&M game was a perfect example of that. Quinn struggled early, looked like Heisman candidate in the 2Q, and finished turning it over twice in the second half. In that backdrop it is not surprising that fans are arguing between an inconsistent 3 year starting QB and the promise of an inexperienced QB with potential on a team with NC talent. It won't end until Quinn plays to his abilities or Manning comes in and shows what he is capable of bringing to the team. As a Texas fan, I hope it is the former. If it is the latter, it will be a very bumpy road.
  25. That's wishful thinking. I imagine Arch will play his way into an upgrade, maybe from the jump, but losing that offensive line is a problem. Goosby showed out well, so losing Banks may not be as bad as some might have thought, but there are a lot of starts leaving the 40 Acres. And honestly, if CJ ends up being an upgrade over current Wisner, then he'll probably be a Heisman candidate. Regardless, our RB corps should be insane.
