We have to play at Alabama tomorrow at 1 pm, which will be a loss. We're 2-6-1 and trending to 2-7-1 this time tomorrow.

I agree there is a lot of Connie Clark to Angie Kelly. Connie's recruiting philosophy of not offering recruits who had committed elsewhere was stupid.

Connie Clark at least had some success. She made the college world series 5 times. This soccer coach hasn't accomplished anything of that level in the postseason.

There's not a single position where you can bring in an otherworldly talent that can make the same kind of difference in soccer as a pitcher can in softball. There may not be another individual position with more difference making ability in team sports than the pitcher in softball. She had two otherworldly talents at pitcher early in her tenure in Christa Williams and Cat Osterman. That's how she made those college world series (Blaire Luna was the primary pitcher in 2013 - also very good - but Williams and Osterman were the Canady of their day). The offense was always incredibly anemic. It's almost more of an indictment she couldn't bring home a ring with that kind of competitive advantage (to be fair 1998 was the start of the program). That was also before the pitching mound was moved from 40' to 43'.

That said, you're of course correct. Connie Clark did achieve success at first. She was still an incredible underachiever with the resources at her disposal. Angela Kelly is at another level of underachievement, but that's in part because she couldn't just magically bring in a star player at one position that could dominate the competition to put the rest of the team on their back. The fact that both coaches completely wasted what should have been a monstrous talent advantage given how much talent this state produces, and the kind of resources the university was willing to dedicated to both sports, especially following the Title IX court settlement, is almost criminal.

Thankfully, Mike White is how in charge in softball, and he's kicking ass. I look forward to seeing who our next soccer coach will be. It's been absurd how long this has been allowed to go on.

you guys are going for the low hanging fruit blaming the coach for this.  i'm okay with firing her, and i'm sure they will, but our girls are getting outplayed in every match and practically the whole game.  they cant keep possession, their passes are weak, they have no speed or energy, they're lazy on defense. the ball is constantly on our side of the field.  even when we have a goal kick, instead of kicking to their side of the field she'll roll the ball to a teammate 20 feet in front of her and it gets stolen on the next pass.  forget coaching.  if you're an elite player, and our university should only recruit those, you should pass crisper and not have the ball stolen from your feet all game long.

Huh, sorry for blaming your girl, Miss Plonsky. But the buck stops with the head coach

thats weak and lazy and in denial.  our girls are not good.  watch them one on one against an opposing player, on offense or defense, either way they rarely win those matches.   has nothing to do with coaching.  our girls are not good.

Who recruited those girls who are not good?

You realize you are talking about college players and not the national team, right?  These players aren't professionals, they are young players who need to be developed.  A huge part of development is instilling standards, cultivating competitiveness, demanding effort, etc.  All the observations of the team that you decry are symptoms of poor coaching.

Coaching in college includes:

Recruiting
Developing
Instilling successful schemes
Creating culture

Ange Kelly has dropped the ball, according to you.  But we should only blame the players and not her.

Blaming the players is what bad coaches do.

What an incredibly bad take. The coach is ultimately responsible for the performance of their program. If the talent isn't there, the scheme isn't working, players aren't developing, and/or "our girls are not good," the head coach is responsible for all of it.

This is like a VP throwing their direct reports under the bus and stating they aren't ultimately responsible for the work product (or lack thereof) that comes from under them. That's complete and utter bullshit.

that is pure bullshit on both your parts.  i'm not defending the coach.  we all know she is a goner.  what i'm saying is our girls are getting outplayed.  if you have the ball one-on-one, and you are an elite athlete, or even a competitive one, in any sport, you want to show the world what you can do with it.  our girls pass the ball like 8 year olds.   in your indignation of ange you are blind on blocking out the glaring shitty play thats right in front of you.  one on one competion has nothing to do with coaching, in any sport.   its skill vs skill.  you either have it or you dont. now maybe some of it is motivation, and they arent motivated to win for this coach.  i'm willing to wager some of that has to do with our shitty play and ball skills.  but our girls play like they have no pride as athletes.

Okay, continue to throw the student athletes under the bus.  That is fucking shitty of you.

They are not being put in positions to succeed.  Ange Kelly has not ever been known for or praised for her offensive sets.

I get your point. Yes, both jimmys and joes, as well as x's and o's, matter in terms of winning. But shitty play is still an indictment of managing the program poorly.

1v1 skills can absolutely be taught, developed, and improved upon. Same with passing, ball skills, etc. I'm not sure how shitty play doesn't also fall on the coach responsible for getting the players ready to play...
