Leaving Portland today after a couple of days away. This is our second time so we were able to hit places we couldn't on our last visit. Here are some highlights:

-Casco Bay Tour to House Island (private island with old fort on it- near Ft Gorges Island)

-Hike around Wolfe Neck State Park in Freeport followed by trip to LL Bean Outlet (worth noting there's a whole outlet shopping center there, so it's much more than just LL Bean).

-Ferry to Peaks Island and bike ride around the island: found a hidden beach off the main road that was really cool and took some side trails to the Battery Steel fortifications, which were extremely eery partially due to some kids walking through the dark structure making haunting sounds. Once you're in there, it's pitch black and there are rooms and offshoots on the right that are not visible here.

Beach on Peaks Island:

-Drive to Mackworth Island and Baxter State Park. Really pleasant (and easy) trails and good views. A consistent breeze on the ocean side made it ideal weather on a warm Maine day. There's a kind of strange "fairy village" and School for the Deaf that add some interesting quirks to the hike.

Food:

-Eventide. Give yourself at least an hour of time to wait (you can leave while you wait). Alternatively, The Honey Paw next door is owned by the same people and they even share a kitchen, but it doesn't have nearly the same wait as Eventide. It's an Asian fusion restaurant.

-DiMillos on the Water. Nice views, great food. Highly recommend the clam chowder and pecan encrusted haddock. Waiter who worked there for 35 years said it's by far his favorite dish. There's also a piece of the Berlin Wall out front.

-Bite of Maine. Nice place for lunch and, in my experience, the best place to get whoopie pies.

-Tandem Coffee and Bakery. I cannot emphasize this enough. This cinnamon roll was incredible, as was the blueberry lemon poppyseed scone.20250722_181603.thumb.jpg.a80f725e17f98cb6b25e0031a2469787.jpg

We left talking about how we could make it work to buy a small cabin to visit regularly while renting it out during travel season. Open to ideas and suggestions on this. There's lots to do and enjoy in this area. We hope to bring our kids next time.

Currently making our way through Maine. Couple of days in Portland. Heading to Bangor today for a show, then driving down to Acadia for a couple of days.

It’s been unseasonably hot, finally cooling off a bit today.

Yesterday, we went out to the Two Lights area and hiked around.

Took a boat out in the morning looking for whales. Didn’t see any, but did come across a school of stripers hammering pogies….killed me not to have a rod. Got a great view of the lighthouse, though.

And, will update more on the entertaining part of the evening…had dinner at the bar at Blythe and Burrows. The attractive curvy brunette next to my wife struck up a convo, and they became fast friends. Like…even a bit handsy. Wanted to connect on Instagram, we did so. As we left, I told my wife that I thought there was an 80% chance she was trying to pick her/us up. Got back to the hotel, sleuthed on her a bit, found out more about her. Revised my assessment: it was a 100% chance she was trying to pick her up. Nice.

I look forward to seeing the posts on the "other" thread

Went out of Boston last year and saw many humpback and minke in addition to one large fin. Boat crew said the fin was a fairly rare sighting and the total number of whales we saw was the most they'd seen on a single trip in a couple years. It was pretty damn cool.

The “reason” for the trip: to see Live and Collective Soul in concert (wife loves Live, we wanted to see them somewhere cooler than Texas).

Collective Soul actually put on a great show, fantastic fan service. Live was good, she enjoyed all the deep cuts, so all is good.

The crowd was….amazing. Pure Maine working class. Lotta Carhartt, Mercury outboard, Harley, and other assorted fishing and hunting gear in the crowd. Not a lotta fancy tourists.

After the show, we drove down towards Bar Harbor and just arrived at our cabin.

A couple years ago, we went to boston, and I had a really good stout near harvard. It was by a maine brewery called mast landing. The beer is gunner’s daughter.

I looked for it in every restaurant we went to last week. It was at only one of them. West Street Cafe in bar harbor.

Damn it was good.
