Vic was not going to let Lee beat us by herself. Her teammates could not pick up the slack. Great game plan and executed near perfectly

Great plan by Vic, great work by Ebo and Gaston.

Dominant performance,  great D on Lee after her 61 game.  - she went 9 for 20

Very satisfying win.

No. 9/10 Women’s Basketball downs No. 25/RV Kansas State, 66-48
Aliyah Matharu records a team-high 18 points as the Longhorns capture their fourth-straight win

AUSTIN, Texas — Junior Aliyah Matharu tallied a team-high 18 points Wednesday evening in helping propel No. 9/10 Texas to an impressive 66-48 victory over No. 25/RV Kansas State inside the Frank Erwin Center.

With the win, the Longhorns run their win streak to four games and improve to 15-3 overall with a 5-2 mark in Big 12 Conference action. The Wildcats drop to 15-5, 5-3.
Matharu finished the game shooting 6-of-14 from the field with a 4-of-9 clip from behind the arc. She also brought down five rebounds and dished out three assists in the win.

Senior Audrey Warren also had an impressive night on the hardwood as she racked up 16 points on a sparkling 8-of-9 performance from the floor to go along with three rebounds and three steals.

Joanne Allen-Taylor finished with 12 points and Lauren Ebo led the team on the glass with nine boards. Rori Harmon dished out a team-high 6 assists.

Drawing the difficult defensive assignment of guarding Kansas State forward Ayoka Lee, who posted an NCAA DI record 61 points in her last outing, Ebo held up well as Lee was limited to 20 points on the night. Ebo also finished with three blocks in the win.

Once again, the Longhorns played suffocating team defense throughout the contest holding the Wildcats to a 34.7 percent (17-of-49) mark from the field and a 16.7 percent (1-of-6) mark from three-point range.

UT forced 19 KSU turnovers in the game, which led to 18 points, and committed 15  turnovers on the other end.

Texas outrebounded Kansas State, 33-32 and held a 26-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Texas finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field with a 33.3 percent (6-of-18) mark from long distance.

Lee paced the Wildcats offense with her 20 points and also led the team on the glass with 11 rebounds. Serena Sundell finished with 13 points.

Texas is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 29, as they travel to Norman to take on No.18/21 Oklahoma. Tip is slated for 2:00 p.m. CT and will air nationally on Bally Sports Oklahoma. (This does appear on spectrum's guide for 2:00 PM on Saturday on Bally Sports #318. I'm sure this is because of OU's TV deal with FOX Sports)

KSU got knocked out of the five way tie for 1st - 5-2 Texas is behind 6-2 ISU and OU due to playing one less game and ahead of 4-2 Baylor due to playing one more game.  So naturally, we face the team ahead of us (OU) on Saturday.

"The Tennessee women's basketball team has lost forward/center Keyen Green to an ACL injury, suffered in Sunday's victory over Georgia, and she will miss the rest of this season."

Real bummer for Green and Tennessee, hate to see ACL injuries.

Tuesday's bracketology update.  Texas has moved into the top 16 as of Tuesday, so last night's win should solidify them on the 4 seed line and in line to move up to a 3 seed with OU, Baylor, Baylor as our next 3 games.  We will see where the committee has Texas (#6 NET).

A&M is the first team out
1 seeds (NET in parenthesis): NC State (2), South Carolina (1), Stanford (3), Tennessee (7)
2 seeds: Indiana (10), Louisville (4), Arizona (8), LSU (18)
3 seeds: BYU (14), Iowa State (11), Georgia (25) and Michigan (22)
4 seeds: UConn (9), Baylor (21), Texas (6), Georgia Tech (24)

There is some WILD disparity there in seeds and NET - LSU isn't a top 16 in NET but is considered in the 5-8 range.  Georgia, Michigan, Baylor and GT got good seeds for their NETs and Texas is wildly seeded below its NET rating.  Charlie Creme is either flat out wrong or delusional.

Oklahoma moves down to a 5 seed, Kansas moves up to an 8 seed, Princeton moves up to an 11 seed (that is such a nice win on our resume), KSU moves up to a 5 seed

There will definitely be bits of movement here and there - still room within the top 16 for teams to move up and down a seed line.

Updated Bracketology after last night's reveal and subsequent SEC upset madness

NCAA Women's Bracketology - 2022 women's college basketball projections (espn.com)

NC State (Bridgeport), Louisville (Wichita), SCe (Greensboro) and Stanford (Spokane) are 1 seeds.  Louisville takes Tennessee's #1 spot
Indiana, Tennessee, Arizona and Texas are the 2s
Baylor, Iowa State, Michigan and UConn are the 3s.  Baylor takes LSU's #3 seed
LSU, Oregon, KSU and Georgia are the 4s

The Massey comp ratings have us finishing the season 10-1 for a predicted 25-4 season - that is actually a #1 seed resume if NC State, Louisville or Stanford lose some they should not.

Texas #6 in Massey - 18th ranked offense, 10th ranked defense, SOS #28.  Remaining odds for the season (as of today):

  • 52% chance of winning at OU
  • 47% chance of winning at Baylor
  • 66% chance of beating Baylor at home
  • 81% chance of winning at Tech (a
  • 68% chance of beating OU at home
  • 65% chance of beating Iowa State at home
  • 72% chance of winning at WV
  • 56% chance of winning at KSU
  • 95% chance of beating TCU at home
  • 68% chance of winning at KU
  • 91% chance of beating OSU at home

I don't think 10-1 is likely, but I think we are set up for a really good 9-2 or 8-3 finish heading into Big 12 tournament with really good odds of winning the Big 12.

Offensively, OU is #1 in the conference at 83.8 ppg.  Texas is #5 at 66.0 ppg.
Defensively, Texas is #1 at 56.4 ppg and OU is #10 at 77.0 ppg.
Texas is #1 in scoring margin at 9.6 ppg.  OU is #2 at 6.8 ppg.

OU is #1 in Team FG at 46.4%.  Texas is #7 at 40.3%
Texas is #2 in opponent FG at 39.2%.  OU is #7 at 41.4%
OU is #3 in 3P% at 39.3% (9.6 makes per game).  Texas is #6 at 30.6% (5.4 makes per game).
OU is #1 in opponent 3P% at 20.6%.  Texas is #2 at 28.8%
OU is #4 in FT% at 74.2%.  Texas is #8 at 67.8%

Texas is #5 in rebounds per game (36.4).  OU is #6 (35.9)
Texas is #1 in offensive rebounds (14 per game).  OU is #8 (8.9 per game)
O is #3 in defense rebounds (27 per game).  Texas is dead last at #10 (22.4 per game)
Texas is #3 in rebounding margin (+2.6 per game).  OU is #10 (-4.6 rebounds per game)

OU is #1 in assists (20.5/game) and Texas is #9 (11.71 per game)
Texas is #1 in steals (9.29/game) and OU is #2 (8.75/game)

Tale of the tape - Texas is a really good defensive team and offensive rebounding team.  OU is a good shooting team and they rebound well, but that's probably because they don't play defense and teams take a lot of shots against them.  Texas will turn you over.

If Texas' defense of the last 3 games (48, 47, 48 points allowed) shows up in Norman, Texas wins.  Texas is bigger and more physical inside.

Texas' guards have to play really good defense on Taylor Robertson (48% from three; 82/170), Madi Williams (32% from three; 24/74), Nevaeh Tot (35%; 14/40), Kennady Tucker (36%, 12/33) and Kaley Perskins (55%; 12/22)

If we shut down Robertson, Texas wins this one easily. I don't see how they stop us, because they haven't stopped anyone yet.

Points allowed in Big 12 play:

91 to Tech compared to 74 for Texas
81 to ISU compared to 48 for Texas
68 to Kansas compared to 70 to KU (in OT; 59 in regulation)
71 to TCU compared to 47 for Texas
76 to WV compared to 57 for Texas

• SERIES: Texas leads, 36-26. Last meeting: Oklahoma 68-63 OT (Feb, 27, 2021; Austin, Texas).

Notables:

OPENING TIP: The No. 9/10 Texas Women's Basketball team will look to capture its fifth-straight Big 12 victory Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. CT) as they travel to Norman to take on No. 18/21 Oklahoma in a Red River Rivalry tilt inside the Sooners' Lloyd Noble Center. The Longhorns are coming off an impressive 66-48 home win over No. 25/RV Kansas State on Wednesday and will be seeking their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.

THE SERIES: Texas and OU will meet for the 63rd time overall on Saturday. The Longhorns own a 36-26 advantage over the Sooners in the all-time series and have won eight of the last nine meetings. The Longhorns and Sooner split the season series last year.

TOP 16 REVEALED: The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball selection committee released its first projections for the top 16 seeds in the 2022 NCAA Championships with Texas being projected as the No. 7 overall seed in the tournament.

The Longhorns were paired in the Spokane Region as the No. 2 seed along with No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 UCONN and No.4 Georgia. South Carolina earned the top overall seed with N.C. State and Tennessee holding the other regional No.1 seed spots.

ROAD WARRIORS: Throughout the first half of the 2021-22 season, Texas has found a way to play some of their best basketball on the road. The Longhorns are 6-1 on the road this season with 4-of-6 wins coming against ranked opponents. Texas defeated No.3 Stanford (Nov. 14) and No. 17 Texas A&M (Dec. 5) and No. 7 Iowa State. Their only road defeat of the season was a 74-70 overtime loss at No.16 Tennessee (Nov. 21).

THE SCHAEFER FORMULA: Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer makes no secret in the way his teams have found success over the years. Relentless full court defensive pressure, attention to detail, and limiting turnovers and mistakes have been built in to the identity of his programs. The 2021-22 Longhorns are no different ranking among the best in the country in several defensive categories.  UT currently ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 21 in the NCAA holding opponents to just 54.8 points per game. They also lead the league and rank No. 9 nationally in turnovers forced at 23.6 per contest.

SCOUTING THE SOONERS:  The Longhorns will have their hands full against a Sooners squad that owns the No. 2 scoring offense in the country at 87 points per game. OU also ranks No. 6 in the NCAA in three-point field goals per game at 9.0. The Sooners are coming off an 84-58 home victory over Oklahoma State in their last outing and are 10-1 when playing on their home floor this season.

Oklahoma has three players currently averaging 15-plus points per game led by Madi Williams who ranks No.4 in the Big 12 in scoring at 18.1 points per game. Taylor Robertson ranks No. 7 in the league at 17. 9 points per game and Ana Llanusa is averaging 17.3. Williams also lead the team on the glass bringing down 7.9 rebounds per contest.

NEXT: Following Saturday's matchup, the Longhorns will head to Waco to take on No. 11/14 Baylor next Friday, Feb. 4 (7 p.m.) before hosting the Bears inside the Erwin Center on Sunday, Feb. 6 (3 p.m. CT). Both games are set to air nationally on ESPN 2.

Always good to see Hunter in photos. She’s getting into games, but not much. But she hasn’t quit on the team and you know Vic won’t quit on her

Yes absolutely. I wish she would progress to the point where she could be used in tight games or we have some blowouts where she could get some experience but I don't see that happening in the next few. Could be a valuable piece next year. Must be hard to see your teammates celebrating a big victory when you haven't even set foot on the floor.

That is some lock-down defense.

Our greatest strength is our on-ball pressure which changes the opponent's entire game plan.
What worries me most is the refs calling the game so tight we can't play our D and Harmon, Matharu etc. getting in foul trouble.

If they let the teams play I always like our chances.

Go Horns, OU sucks.

Nice story on Aaliyah Moore that will get you "pumped" before the game.  (excerpts)

So when Moore was asked last week whether she thought the state of Oklahoma would even allow its prodigal daughter to cross back over the Red River for this game, she just laughed. But Longhorns head coach Vic Schaefer interrupted with an assurance.

"They're gonna let her in the state, that ain't going to be an issue." Schaefer said. "They can boo and hiss all they want."

"I wanted to win," Moore said. "When I found out it was going to be coach Schaefer that was coming here, I was like, 'Oh yeah, he knows how to win.' I mean, that's perfect."

Oklahoma is allowing 74.8 points per game, but that conference-worst mark hasn't slowed the Sooners. DePaul is the only team in the country that's scoring more than Oklahoma, which averages 87 points.

"Offensively, they're just a machine," Schaefer said. "(Baranczyk) does a great job and they're really talented. Obviously, there's some kids there that can really play and they're really fitting into her system."
