Yeah I'm not gonna lie, Lance Leipold is a whole bitch. He was crying like a little girl about the tortilla toss during the week leading up to the game and cried about it to the refs during the game. Of course, there is no video or photographic evidence to back up his claim, which means he's just dead set on becoming new aggy I guess.

Other than the first sentence, this is just a complete fantasy you made up in your head. I have already posted about how I don't necessarily agree with Cody's position here, but this post makes you look like a fucking moron because you clearly don't have any idea what his actual position is or what he's advocating for. You're just making an assumption and then making it everyone else's problem that you're actually just too lazy to look it up for yourself.

If you wanna talk shit, talk your shit. Don't couch it behind vague, passive aggressive, half baked criticisms and poorly understood talking points or whatever to try and make yourself look like some kind of objective pundit here.

This is why I wasn't taking you seriously and it seems like I was right.

I have read things, have listened and what I hear him saying and watch what he is doing appear to be two different things, but as I am too lazy and not smart enough to understand I will see myself out.

No, don't run away. You wanted my attention and you now have it.

You confidently asserted:

  1. That we are attempting to spin our NIL spending in some way
  2. That CC is running a commercial that is claiming that:
    1. Things in college football need to change to save it
    2. Money should be taken out of the game

All of that is entirely made up.

We haven't tried "spinning" our NIL spending in any way, we've owned it fully, and I find it absolutely hilarious to me that you claim to admire SMU for doing, quite literally, exactly what we are doing. Hell, I do too, but at least be honest. You want to praise them and shit on us. That's fine, just own it.

The commercial says nothing of the sort, as far as I know he doesn't hold any position anywhere near that. He position is that pooling media rights nationally and keeping them out of the hands of private equity and out of the control of the conference commissioners will lead to an overall increase in revenue for everyone, to the tune of billions of dollars, which in turn will allow sports other than football to flourish across the board. He isn't saying a damn thing about college football needing to change or that money being in the sport the way it is now is a problem. You're just making that up whole cloth.

And look, I'm not even saying I agree with him. I think he doesn't fully understand what he's talking about, I think his position is highly speculative/wishcasty, and I think his talking points when speaking to the media about this or even in his commercial are far too vague. I think the only reason anyone is taking him seriously on this is because he has Trump's ear.

Like I said before, if you wanna talk shit then talk shit. I don't care, I love it.

Not sure if this is something Tech was angling for, but the renovated Jones looks iconic in the sense that it easily looks identifiable because of the end zone. As is the case with UT’s unique end zone, these two stadiums are among a few that, from the inside, stand out. Honestly, Tech’s place looked awesome on TV Saturday night.

Good watch if you want to see most of the stuff inside the football facility. This dude has been to every P4 stadium.

Don't disagree that Tech and SMU have done pretty much the same thing, and I have respect for them doing so.  The difference, imo, is Campbell lobbying for one big pool of TV money to be shared equally.  Maybe I don't understand correctly, but that seems like a wealthy capitalist jonesing for socialism.  Equal revenue sharing has never happened in CFB and I doubt the BIG and SEC will let it happen, so I really don't concern myself with it.  Only posting here to understand is position if I am off on Campbell's position.

But Tech coach Joey McGuire has been frustrated that fans are continuing to cause issues for his team. Tech has tried to start a new tradition of throwing tortillas only during the opening kickoff.

"We've got a new rule in this league, and we know the rule and we didn't follow it and we got penalized tonight with two 15-yard penalties," McGuire said Saturday night of the postgame scene with Leipold. "He was frustrated on that side, and we've got to be better. We've got to do a better job as a whole, all of us, and we will."

He implored Red Raiders fans to follow the rules, questioning how they could want to cost their team penalty yards.

"If you came to the game and you love this team and you're passionate about this team but yet you're going to throw another tortilla?" McGuire said. "And you know it's against the rules?"

I don't care what Campbell thinks. Buying these players might make them believe they're gonna be Bama, but the reality is they're just dressing up as Auburn for Halloween every cycle without the championships. They'll get 5-7 mostly 4* recruits, with maybe one or two 5*, but the rest will be nothing but 3* filler, so I don't know why anyone thinks Campbell will be making much of a difference just because he's spending their budget on one-two 5* every cycle. Good for them for making the top 25 in recruiting at #23 (one spot ahead of SMU) so far. They have one 5* and four 4* recruits and fourteen 3*. I don't know how many more they plan to take, or if they'll just go portal heavy, but then what about the portal? More money spent. Being a billionaire is great I'm sure, but overspending on a recruit like Ojo who is a project is retarded. 2027 they have one 5*, a top fifty 4*, one top 200 4*, and a 3*. Drops will happen, risers will come, so already spending like that is dumb af.

I get it, the tech grads/fans here love Lubbock, but the rest of us who graduated from Texas or are Texas fans and attend games, did it for not just academic reasons, but Austin, which sells itself. This is what Campbell doesn't understand. Most of these recruits don't even know about Lubbock, don't care about Lubbock, or don't want to sign some ridiculous contract binding them to a school and/or team they may not want to be at in the middle of nowhere who play no one, hence why the top 10 teams in recruiting each year have between three to six 5* and fiftenen to twenty 4* with around six 3* on average, and it's always the same teams, with the outlier here or there (aggy).  Campbell thinks their money can get them there, but he's being delusional. We know this. Tech fans on this board know it.

If they make the playoffs, that's great for them, but once they're seeded against a team stacked with damn near 4/5* talent, they're going to look out of place and get embarrassed. Just like SMU and Boise, and ASU before we started getting players hurt/injured in the game for their "miraculous comeback." The ceiling is the playoffs, not championships, because that will absolutely never happen as long as the Texas', Bama's, Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Georgia's of the world still exist.

But Cam Skataboo was a fucking beast.

Nah I read it. You might be right and you might be wrong. But honestly, your take is definitely outdated at the very least. I think the plan is portal heavy again in 2026 and less so moving forward, they have been focusing hard on 2027+ as far as high school recruiting goes. What Cody Campbell thinks doesn't really matter, he's just the one of the many money men. He's not making the decisions, he's not involved in talent evaluation, he's just the most visible dude writing checks (and not even the largest one). The money is effectively immaterial, it's not running out any time soon.

These kinds of takes are pretty amusing, not because I think it's dumb or anything, it's just the default take that's been true for years and year so why not now? I can't really fault you for holding onto the same opinion, at least until we prove otherwise. That said, anyone that has actually watched us play and/or understands how our system is set up for us to continue to do what we're doing from a recruiting standpoint has a very different opinion.

We pulled 21 transfers out of the portal to overhaul a team that had excellent/talented skill players but lacked talent and depth on defense and on both the O-line and D-lines. 15 have been high impact, and basically every defensive transfer we brought in has been a hit. So far, we're getting an excellent ROI by literally every available metric. We have talent and depth at every position. We have, by every measure, one of the best front sevens in the country, including probably two of the top 3 edge rushers in the country (the Miami dude is probably the best overall) and arguably the best linebacker in the country, etc.

It's a pretty decent turnaround from year to year from a team that could barely block and couldn't play defense worth a shit. It was pretty jarring/telling to see one of our starting OTs from last season starting at LT for UH this year and just getting his ass absolutely handed to him the entire game by our D-line.

Would we fall flat on our faces against a playoff team from the SEC/B1G/ACC? I think it's pretty unlikely, and so does pretty much everyone else that's paying attention. You mention the "Texas', Bama's, Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Georgia's", but if we're being honest here it's fairly questionable if half those teams are even good this year. I think we're much more comparable (this season) to a team like Indiana. I also am pretty confident that we are not just better than last year's ASU team, but better by a pretty decent margin.

At any rate, there's still half a season to play and we'll certainly see how it all plays out.

Big 12 came out today and admitted this was bullshit and fined KU for lying about it. Someone filed an open records request to get the video from the investigation:

I'll save you the pain and suffering of having to watch a 1p video but the TLDR is Tech and the Big 12 office both concluded that a Kansas assistant dropped his own pocket knife on the ground and a Kansas player then picked it up and handed it to Lance Leipold, who then ran over to the ref and showed it to him, which resulted in a 15 yard penalty against Tech.

Like I said, Lance Leipold is a whole bitch.

I was surprised to learn the degree to which Tech appears to be developing its recruited talent. The QBs, Morton, Hammond, and other talented contributors such as Williams, Dickey, Eakin, Douglas, Wilson, Carter, Ponton, Roberts, Rodriguez, Curry, Ramirez, etc. are not portal gets. Those guys have come up through the program. Tech seems to have used the  portal to enhance key areas. Less than half of starters from last game came from the portal. In all the hubbub about Tech’s success in the portal, you rarely hear this narrative advanced.

Texas Tech looks great to my eye this year, but what’s hardest to discern is how great. You could make a case for Tech not playing any team as good as a top 5 in conference SEC team or top 3 in conference big 10 team all year. I fully expect them to go 13-0 and then look like a completely different team when their opponent has the same talent level.

It still remains to be seen, but it'll be a fun ride.

Utah is probably a decent barometer. They're one of the best running teams in the country, their offensive line consistently grades out as one of the best in college football, they have at least 2 first round draft picks on the OL, and we completely manhandled them in their own stadium.

The difference this year, at least so far, is that we really pass the eye test. I've watched a lot of Tech football and this team just looks and feels different. We've completely dominated everyone we've played so far in the trenches, and we can run the ball very well.

It will be interesting to see how our numbers hold up through the 2nd half of the season:

  • Total offense - 1st
  • Rushing offense - 14th
  • Passing offense - 3rd
  • Total defense - 9th
  • Rushing defense - 1st
  • Passing defense - 41st

The main thing I am concerned about moving forward are our pass defense, which honestly hasn't really been tested, as in facing a good, veteran QB with multiple weapons. Kansas sort of fits that bill but only sort of. They have a decent passing offense, but not great. Baylor and TCU have good passing games but we don't play either team. We have good talent in the secondary, they are really good in run support, but they've really just been able to coast so far in the passing game and it's only a matter of time before they get punched in the mouth. We face [probably not 100%] Sam Leavitt this week and he has one of the best WRs in America to throw to, but who else do they have beyond that? Not much, really.

The secondary thing is the obvious one: Morton's health. Dude has the absolute worst luck, got his leg rolled up on in the Kansas game in a really awkward way that re-aggravated some calf/ankle issue he's been dealing with. I think he probably could have kept playing, but it's good that we can pull him and keep him out as a precaution because there's not much drop off between him and Hammond. Still, we need him to stay healthy and play well to get where we want to go.

We kind of have the same questions as Ohio State, not trying to draw a comparison here between our programs at all, but who have they really played? No shade to Texas, I'm pretty much discounting entirely a week 1 game against a super green Arch Manning that had just been handed the keys facing the defending national champions in their own building. Outside of that game, they have really played nobody at all and there's a chance they won't play another ranked team for the rest of the season unless Michigan turns their season around. It's difficult to know exactly how good they are. Same thing with Oregon, they got physically dominated by the only good team on their schedule so far, in their own building, and the only good team left on their schedule is USC in late November.

Posted

And that’s totally fair. Utah was a good win. I suppose we’ll see how good. I think going from Morton to Hammond definitely threw their d off and the game became a blowout with Hammond steering the ship.

I can appreciate the point you’re trying to make regarding Ohio State, with us being their big win and how do you gauge that. Good job navigating that respectfully.

Oregon, I don’t know I agree. I think they’re legit, their win over Penn State was a big win based on eye test at the time, and that Penn State’s collapse after that game doesn’t necessarily take away from the team that showed up that day against Oregon with their crowd insanely jacked.

Luckily we’re no longer in BCS times so Tech if they take care of bidness can put some respek on their name come playoff time. Just do us a favor and don’t drop the damn game against BYU so we don’t have to consider a pretender like BYU playoff worthy.

Introduction:

Appreciate the rational response, and yeah, it will always be the default about Lubbock, yada yada yada, but at the same time it's true in a sense because y'all haven't done it - yet. If McGuire can get you guys to the playoffs, more than a few times, then it all becomes moot. Location comes fourth to winning, putting players in the league, and money.

I also agree that this tech team would beat that ASU team, but Skataboo would work your D-line to the point of exhaustion on your part. He is an alien. Levitt, while I think is good, people, Gerry and Bobby included (if you've never watched OTF) sucked him off. That game was Skataboo.

I don't hate tech like a lot of people here so seeing them in the playoffs would be pretty cool. But I am dying on the hill that once/if you make the playoffs, and don't play us if we're on another side, going against a peer team with the level of talent to Texas with mostly 4/5 stars will matter (I'm talking long-term, not this specific season), hence why I said the playoffs are the ceiling (which is better than what, 124 others who don't make it?).

All in all, while I still think you guys are playing high school teams, right now I do believe you could compete in both the SEC/B1G this season due to no one standing out aside from Ohio State, Bama, and maybe Oregon/Indiana (I don't care about their loss to Indiana, those dudes are fast and physical). No team will be undefeated in either conference anymore unless they get the James Franklin special from last year that only he could fuck up. The Big XII is different simply because tech 1) has done a tremendous job in the portal/recruiting, and 2) everyone else in conference, aside from maaaaaaaaybe ASU are WAC-level, unless Utah can turn back the clock, but Whittingham is 65, fixing to retire in less than 3 years, and he's not Cignetti, who himself seems to be an alien.

This year will be fun going forward.

I personally don't think Tech or SMU or others who follow that path will ever win the whole thing. It'll continue to just be bluebloods and blueblood adjacents. And I don't see any program that has never won it all joining the club except for possibly Oregon. I could obviously be wrong but I'm not seeing that path playing out. As a Big XII member I'd be content with conference championships and playoff appearnces with some early round victories. That's the ceiling I see for Big XII clubs going forward.

This is the part that's weird. Most people forget that we did beat them last year and we managed to bottle Skattebo up, this was their stat line:

Our defense was awful last year but it was mainly due to us having a non-existent pass rush and a below average secondary. We did fairly well against the run considering our deficiencies on the D-line. This year I think it would be extremely difficult even for Skattebo.

While one can say yes, you did bottle him up on the ground (even though he did have 2 rushing TD's), he caught 6 passes for 117 yards (so I wouldn't say you "bottled him up" overall), you guys played him in Sept, not January of 2025. He only got better and better as he adjusted to year two of FBS football. It's just the natural progression of athletes. He ended the season with 1700 yards @ 5.8 a clip, and 21 TD's on the ground, to go along with 45 catches for 605 yds and 3 TD's. He had 2,300 yards from scrimmage + 24 TD's in 2024/25

What you guys saw on Sept 21 to what we saw on January 1st are Jekyll and Hyde.

I'm in total agreement that no one outside of bluebloods or bluebloods adjacents will win it all. The gap will always be wide, no matter how much so and so (pick whatever team with billionaires who love to spend) throws money at the program.

I don't even think Oregon will ever win it all in the next 15 years. People are free to disagree, but I just don't see it. They're a really good team, but they have an Ohio State problem, which is much worse than us having a UGA problem due to us and Georgia are similarly situated with recruiting/evaluating/deleopment/coaching (defensively for us atm), whereas Ohio State and Oregon and different due to development and Ohio State just gets better recruits 9/10 times, regardless of what the rankings say.

Lanning has only started to "catch up" in rankings since 2023, but it doesn't matter, he has been their HC since 2021. He did win the conference in 2024, he got absolutely demolished, embarrassed in the playoffs. Oregon looked like they didn't even belong, much like SMU, Boise, Tenn, Indiana, and Clemson. I just don't see Lanning winning it all, and some will or can say Sark, too. Maybe I'm biased, but I can see Sark winning it all at some point, as long as he rids himself of Flood for a real o-line coach.

Lanning is a weird guy. I'm indifferent to him, tbh. He's corny and shit, but whatever. Anyway, you see he has Dakorian Moore, who is a freak athlete, but there is a wide gap between Jeremiah Smith/Carnell Tate to Dakorian Moore/EvanStewart. There just is.

Both Smith and Tate each have 500 yards receiving with Smith having 5 TD's and Tate with 4 TD's with a RS-FR QB, while Moore, who has a junior QB in Moore, has 338 yards and 3 TD's.

Then if we get into the RBs, Ohio State is just on a completely different level. They have 3 RB's that they can use, similarly to Henderson and Judkins to put in and beat you with (Bo Jackson and Donaldson without question, and People's isn't a scrub), then you look at Oregon and see one RB with barely vier 259 yards rushing. By comparison, Ohio State has 3 over the 200 mark, with Jackson having 400+, Donaldson 200+, and People's around 207.

Defensively tOSU is #1 in scoring D, and 4th overall, whereas Oregon is #8, allowing 250+ ypg.

They'll meet in the CCG, and we'll see then, but Ohio State will win that game, imo.

Well they don't play each other in conference, so why not? Am I having a brain fart?

I think the team that just manhandled Oregon in their own stadium might have something to say about who meets Ohio State in the CCG.

Also, am I missing something about Ohio State's running game beyond so far beyond everyone else's? They're 62nd in the country in rushing offense and have played exactly one defense that I would classify as top tier and they had 2.3 ypc in that game.

Yep.  You can portal in a number of good players, but you also have to recruit well and manage both effectively.  It's depth that the BB's have.  Season's getting longer only benefit the BB's more and more.  They have a deeper roster of talent to adjust to inevitable player injuries, transfers, etc.

I personally don't think Tech or SMU or others who follow that path will ever win the whole thing. It'll continue to just be bluebloods and blueblood adjacents. This is what complete defeat in a fanbase looks like.  I don't blame you, as an OSU fan, for this state of mind.  Here's hoping things turn around in Stillwater.

My thoughts on this have nothing to with OSU’s current enshitification. I actually have some confidence we’ll settle back into competitiveness soon enough. I just recognize the general ceiling that exists for mid tier P4 programs.

Counterpoint: Some conferences it’s easier to go through your conference slate with less injuries than others.

Between Purdue, NC State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Colorado, UCF, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Cal, and West Virginia, I have a pretty good idea of which of those teams I’d prefer to play Saturday for an easier win and less risk for injuries, and they’re all within 10-15 of SP+/FPI.

I agree with this, but some of you should probably take a look at what Tech is doing on the recruiting trail beyond the portal class from last year.  They went heavy portal to help close the gap, but they're landing some whales now and winning recruiting battles against blue bloods.  I don't know if they will successfully pull off this transition from mid-tier-also-ran to consistent contender in time for the big shake-ups coming in a few years, but they are doing everything right to make it happen. It will be fascinating to watch.   The old school way of looking at college football doesn't apply anymore, and Tech is playing this new game as well or better than any other program in the country at the moment.  It's shocking, frankly.

Anyone who hasn't watched the Tech defense play yet should do so, especially if you understand and appreciate what good defense looks like.  That front seven is as good as any team in the country, I don't care what conference they're in.  And they're not all portal guys.  If Tech doesn't go deep in the playoffs, it will be because their starting QB is a middling game manager who fancies himself a gunslinger.  This doesn't look like a one-off season for them, either, so they're going to be in the discussion, and likely the playoffs, for a while.  The gap between their program and the rest of the Big 12 is large.  History tells us they'll find a way to fuck it all up, though.

Yeah, I think their biggest advantage is that they can keep more of their freshman recruits for all 3-4 years. If they are starting, getting paid, and have a realistic shot at a championship, why transfer? Tech and SMU et al. are going to lose those players even if they can match or slightly exceed the blueblood money offer for the sole reason that the blueblood can also make a better pitch about a legit shot at a national title.
