Arch Manning: Doing his best JAG impression to fool scouts

It could also be a combo of technique, strength training vs recruiting big jags.  I know Paul Wadlington has been harping about the technique of the interior guys (and possibly S&C but im not too sure since our DL last few years were strong).

ScipioTex wrote extensively about the problem with Greg Davis' line recruiting not matching his offense. Demanding reach blocks from guys who were better at driving. I haven't read him in years. One of the best writers on the internet for my money.

Since Sark has been here its been a problem. I will be honest for a minute here. I've been talking shit on this thread to a few people who were very loud last year. However, the reality is that we've sucked in the interior in the Sark era. Bijan and Rojo made their own yards. Brooks was good at that too. In pass pro the LG has been an issue for a long time too. Last year whenever we played quality fronts we couldn't get a push at all. Even Arizona St was stoning us up front, and blowing up our OZ with penetration. I'm beyond baffled because it's carried over so many different dudes. It simply hasn't mattered who we've put there the problems have persisted.

Well there is only one constant and it is Flood. Gerry talks about him at Alabama as a way to excuse Flood but I don't think he either recruited or had a final say on who got recruited to play OL at Alabama. These are his guys and his pupils and they suck. Finally Coach Shipley put Gerry in his place by saying the OL is all Flood's fault because he is either not teaching them to deal with the stunts they are seeing or his recruiting guys that can do what he wants them to do.

I said a while ago (when Pittman got fired) that I would like to see an NFL OL coach come in. I think there are some issues with our pass pro schemes. Florida was able to dictate match ups (RB on DE 1 on 1). Georgia abused them last year. I dont know OL play. I am sure there is someone in here that knows OL better, than can talk about this.

So for those who know more than me about OL play (which is every one of you) -- how would you grade Stroh vs Brooks on Saturday?  I assume Stroh is a uniform "F".

I actually know less about OL play than you do...but my answer is that the only positive Brooks brought to the game on Saturday was that he is not Stroh.  That's about all I've got....

Brooks is a freshman and shouldn't be playing in any sane world.

PFF grades:

Stroh - 48.8

Brooks - 0.0

Stroh is the taller midget at this point

I hate pff

its better than most, but it is definitely not perfect (especially for CFB). It is a solid data point, but not the end all be all.

Analogy for why I hate it. Every DB had a poor PFF in the sugar bowl two years ago vs Washington, but we didn't record a single sack on 38 dropbacks. So are the bad PFFs the coverage or the fact Penix had 4-5 seconds and no pass rush? When all the linemen get a poor PFF is some of that being expected to maintain blocks for extended time? That's why I hate PFF. It never tells the whole story. For example. A QB throwing to 3 receivers vs 5 is going to have a tougher time and likely a lower PFF. Same with a QB who throws to a bunch of moving targets vs stationary ones. I've seen terrible QBs who spend all game throwing sticks and deep curls who have PFFs through the roof but can't play worth a shit. Lol.

I cannot rule out that the S&C is off, but I do not see the evidence for it. The DL has been really stout. The OL has been soft. If it was something simple like the team was not doing enough heavy squats, you would think it would show up across the board. You also have Stroh, who is as strong as an ox. I lean more to the techniques being taught or not taught on the OL

The best interior DL Texas has had under sark has featured 4/5th year guys and transfers. Could be that the S&C isn’t that good.

Have we been able to consistently run between the tackles since Mackovic and Ricky Williams? We've had a lot of 4/5 star backs and several made it to the NFL, but it seems like a 25 year theme of soft ass zone blocking and hoping the RB can find a crease and make a play on his own. Greg Davis, Shawn Watson, Tim Beck, Sark...  The years when we had dynamic running threats at QB (VY, Colt, Sam), it was enough to keep defenses off balance and the RBs were able to find more of those creases.

So if the staff sees it that way we're back to Stroh?  Lovely.

Brooks is really a tackle, but since the staff had no ideas they decided to throw him to the wolves at Florida.  Maybe he really is the best option moving forward.

If a freshman RT is your best option at LG then that is pretty cool 5 years into a staff's tenure.

There lot of stuff. It better than things like Passer Rating. There is 0 positional grades outside of PFF. Good coaches put players in positions to succeed. Its why the Purple Wizard was so respected. We are witnessing Sark's have the opposite issue this year. He is running the offense he wants, not the offense his team can run. (Moved to more of a play action deep shot offense, with an OL that cannot run that).

Kinda tough when January and hills were the only ones that been here long (2 years) as far as IDL.

Now Burke has been here under Becton for a few years..

Outside of the RPO bag, he has been running the same shit. Same plays.

You just like to bang this drum, despite the entire world noticing the changes. You got to be you. So, Texas went from leading the nation in passes behind the LOS to PA deep shot offense, but it is all the same. Frequency of the type of play calls is completely different.  I guess this is a case of do not trusting your lying eyes.

Last year was mostly OZ and screen game (obviously over simplified). Athletic OL and a QB that excelled at throwing screens, so that fit.

This year is way more PA deep shots. Sark was looking to take advantage of a QB that could threaten a defense deep. Big issue is nobody respects the run game. Hell, I do not even know what the focus of the run game is at this point. The OL cannot protect to get those PA shots off. Safeties are sitting back, because there is no reason to be quick to support the run game. Though outside of Mike Leach rising from the grave, I am not sure there is an offense that fits this OL. I just pray they improve and this comment looks stupid next weekend.

The only change is arch doesn’t see the check downs or anything below 20 yards unless it’s specifically designed to go to a particular guy in that range.

I am not going to continue this argument. You have to blind or ignorant not to see the changes in this offense from last year to this year. I have seen multiple people with access to All 22 bitching about the routes. Film Guy even put out his Mea Culpa after seeing the All-22. Homer and Scip were bitching about it. Coach from OnTexas bitched about it. I will admit Arch has his issues, but he is not being put in a position to succeed either. It seems a lot of people notice these things, except you and @Thatguy

PFF is a little similar to stats like fWAR, VORP, and PER- it’s far from perfect, but at the end of the season every year the best performing players are also the highest rated.

call back to last year-

taaffe, mukuba, barron, golden, banks et al were all rated highly, while qe was rated lowly. PFF didn’t miss on a single UT player last year, but people still want to cast doubt on PFF for, uh, reasons.

Sark specifically said they were trying to stress UF deep.  We just didn't make the throws most of the time.  Wingo's pass would have made a huge difference, that was an easy TD.

I liked the strategy, but the execution lacked, and the OL had a lot to do with that.

We have a compounding issue.

  1. The OL is not good at blocking, which means we're often behind the sticks.
  2. When we're behind the sticks, we have to run longer developing plays.
  3. Blocking for these longer developing plays goes back to point 1, except they have to hold up even longer.

So we end up in a feedback loop where getting behind the sticks means there's an extremely high chance of the drive being doomed.

that is the attempt I want Arch to make. The play was there; the blocking was not. Cannot fault Arch for missing it, eludes one DL and the next one decapitated him. Just needed him to be spectacular to make that throw or OL to be D+. In this offense you have to take those shots, because scoring it not going to be easy. I am going to guess we will see this vs OU, hoping OL gives Arch split second more or he makes the great play. OU can be had deep, if you can get the ball off.

Is the punchline that Texas took it in the ass at every position by a better team. A 1-3 better team?

He pretty much describes this chat. He tweeted out criticisms on Arch during the game, mostly based on the announcers' comments. He saw the ALL-22 film and put this out as a Mea Culpa to Arch, because has was able to see what a shitty situation Arch was put in for this game.

Bro called our LGs 'Food' and 'Donkey'.

He went in. No video.

And he echoed what I and others have asked: Where are the quicks? Slant, Rub. Dig?

Why is every primary route down field 12yds and not looking for the ball, while the 3rd read is short, but it's too late?

OC has to help the sped up QB.

Food. I'm done.

You forgot the penalties we get... But yeah, sounds about right.
