Today I learn that Kip Winger writes classical music. Not only that, but his music is performed by city symphonies.

Those guys in the Winger got a raw deal, thanks to Beavis and Butthead. I love Mike Judge but poor Winger. Not that their music was great, but there were no worse than other hair metal bands of that era.

Reb Beach was an absolute monster on guitar. And I think their drummer was pretty legit too.

I’m sure there’s no shortage of great players from music scenes like hair metal, bro country, and flavor of the month pop acts, etc. Sometimes you gotta pay the bills with the understanding that you might not achieve the respect or recognition you’re looking for if the music you make has an expiration date on popularity or relevance, which probably most music. That makes it even more incredible for the musicians who create stuff that stands the test of time.  We’ll see if Kip can compose as well as other rockers like Stewart Copeland and Jonny Greenwood.

This is about as hair metal as it gets imo

Dude, if you have ever listened to any of those guys speak. Lmao. Insane levels of dumb.

I have not. But not at all surprising.

That tune and video is pretty much every hair metal cliche rolled up into one near perfect summation. It’s almost like if we just had that one song we wouldn’t have needed any of the rest of the genre’s music product at all.

His teeth were far too white.

I never got this...people who claim to hate being stereotyped or pigeonholed because they had a hit single. "But our band was so much more than the one song..."blah blah blah bullshit. Take the fame and riches from your one hit and be happy. One hit is more than 99.999+ % of aspiring musicians ever get.
And Warrant certainly had more than just one hit. So what if it was a campy, cheesy song that broke them? That dude got laid more because of that one song got than he ever did for anything else in his life.

From the same album. I think this is the direction they wanted to go but the record company insisted on Cherry Pie. Don't know if they got clearance from Harriet Beecher Stowe's estate though

This is blowing my mind. I had no idea. I knew that Pantera was glam, but not AIC.

That's really Layne, looking like CC DeVille. Holy shit.

I'm going to listen to Dirt all the way through tomorrow morning on the way to Austin at very high volume as a pallete cleanser

I love my hair metal. There are bands that I never heard of years later that I dig.

I saw Lillian Axe probably five times in Houston in the early 90’s.  They had some great tunes for that era and a number of them stand up today.

Stevie Blaze, their lead guitarist and driver of the band, was excellent and sometimes broke out the nylon string classical acoustic for some intros.

My Number is a great song.  Misery.  Body Double.  Lots of good ones.

Ron would always introduce Body Double by asking the crowd “How do you double your pleasure and double your fun?  Fuck twins!!!!” since that is what the song was about.

I used to be able to sing this and do the scream in the intro.  Pretty sure that isn’t happening today!

That's super cool. And that's a lot of Lilian Axe. I have the Poetic Justice vinyl. And body double is a favorite. Here is a good interview with Blaze.

Guy that played guitar in my older brother’s band had discovered Pantera in ‘86 and loaned me their cassette of whatever album was out then.

i remember a solo piece called Red Light Turning Blue or something.  It ripped.

Pantera ended up being a much different band than what I heard on that cassette.

Love hair metal. Sex, drugs and rock and roll. It was loud and fun. Got to see Poison, Skid Row and Vince Neil probably ten years ago. Vince sucked, but the rest was awesome.

In ‘99 I went and saw Poison, Ratt, Great White (this is before the fire), and was supposed to see L.A. Guns but their bus broke down.

I don’t care for Poison.  Too cliche and bubble gum for me, and I hate C.C.’s vibrato.  Hate it.  But man, they put on a show.  They killed it.

Ratt was like I remembered from the 80’s.  DeMartini shredded and was excellent on stage, Pearcy snag sang some lyrics and talked others.  They were pretty good.

Great White was really good.  The last time I had seen them they were opening for Judas Priest in ‘84.

But the people watching.  Oh man, the people watching.  It was excellent.  Burned out looking 40 year olds with threadbare Union Jack sleeveless shirts from the Pyromania tour.

Women in their 40’s who probably rocked the leather mini skirt back in the day, now a bit heavier but trying to squeeze into those same clothes.

And then the strippers.  22 year old strippers, all in an big group, wearing not many clothes, all coming to see bands their parents played on the radio driving them to school, seeing the bands whose songs they now dance to for money.

It was a fun night!

2002 or 2003 I saw Poison, skid row and Vince Neil. Bach had the best voice and killed it. Vince was, well, terrible and has only gotten worse. Poison was a really fun time - even if it was super bubblegum. This was at Cythiawoods. The scantily clad women were also out en mass.
