Some early season stats and thoughts... the schedule has been weak (other than Miami) and it is way early in the season to draw any conclusions, so take everything with a grain of salt but:

  • The Spurs are essentially tied with OKC in defensive rating (104.1 vs. 104.2) leading the league. Spurs are #8 in offensive rating. They are second in net rating (13.4) behind Denver (14.4) who just got a massive boost by beating the Pels by 34. Miami (10.4) and OKC (9.9) are #3 and #4, respectively.
  • Miami had been on fire prior to last night averaging 131.5 ppg. Spurs held them to 101. They also play at the fastest pace in the league and the Spurs are #27, if that gives you an idea on how they are imposing their will on teams defensively and controlling pace.
  • The Spurs are #1 in rebounding percentage (essentially tied with Houston).
  • Spurs are 5th in EFG%.
  • The Spurs are #2 in defensive FG% (42%) - Boston is #1 at 40.1%, which makes no sense to me. The Spurs also have the league's highest differential between DFG% an OFG% at 4.0%.
  • Spurs are 22nd in assist percentage. I'm pretty sure they led the league in assist percentage last year despite being pretty fucking awful on offense.
  • They are 17th in TO% and 20th in AST/TO ratio which is pretty bad (thanks Stephon), but they are also creating shots differently than last year.
  • They are 24th in 3PA and 22nd in 3PM. I think last year they were toward the top of the league in attempts and near the bottom in makes. Obviously pace plays into that, but shot selection... how does it work?
  • Worst stat of all: they are 27th in FT% at 73%.

In any event, this team is winning by playing great defense and killing teams on the boards, and playing efficiently on offense at a slow pace. That's how you win in the playoffs. Love that they're doing it without Fox, Olynyk, Sochan and for the most part Kornet. I think you will see offensive efficiency get even better once they all get healthy. I want to see them play better competition, but there's still sooooo much room for growth both from the overall youth learning curve and the return of the injured guys not to mention making their fucking free throws. KJ and Vassell finding roles that they can excel in has been gratifying and fun to watch, and I think you have to give a lot of credit to Mitch for that.

Then again, blah blah blah....  it's all about Wemby.

Also... has anyone looked at the NBA cup groupings? Spurs, Nuggets, Rockets, Warriors and Blazers. Nice job, league

82-0 still on the table. Just saying. GSG.

would take Fox + Sochan + 3 firsts.  Not sure if he is worth it.  He comes to play about 10% of the time.

Fox also can’t be traded until the deadline. They can’t really match salaries (on any kind of star) without trading Vassell.

I don't want Fox gone. The concept of a starting five is a bit antiquated. I want to see hockey substitutions. Our depth will really shine once the bigs are back.
