Some early season stats and thoughts... the schedule has been weak (other than Miami) and it is way early in the season to draw any conclusions, so take everything with a grain of salt but:

  • The Spurs are essentially tied with OKC in defensive rating (104.1 vs. 104.2) leading the league. Spurs are #8 in offensive rating. They are second in net rating (13.4) behind Denver (14.4) who just got a massive boost by beating the Pels by 34. Miami (10.4) and OKC (9.9) are #3 and #4, respectively.
  • Miami had been on fire prior to last night averaging 131.5 ppg. Spurs held them to 101. They also play at the fastest pace in the league and the Spurs are #27, if that gives you an idea on how they are imposing their will on teams defensively and controlling pace.
  • The Spurs are #1 in rebounding percentage (essentially tied with Houston).
  • Spurs are 5th in EFG%.
  • The Spurs are #2 in defensive FG% (42%) - Boston is #1 at 40.1%, which makes no sense to me. The Spurs also have the league's highest differential between DFG% an OFG% at 4.0%.
  • Spurs are 22nd in assist percentage. I'm pretty sure they led the league in assist percentage last year despite being pretty fucking awful on offense.
  • They are 17th in TO% and 20th in AST/TO ratio which is pretty bad (thanks Stephon), but they are also creating shots differently than last year.
  • They are 24th in 3PA and 22nd in 3PM. I think last year they were toward the top of the league in attempts and near the bottom in makes. Obviously pace plays into that, but shot selection... how does it work?
  • Worst stat of all: they are 27th in FT% at 73%.

In any event, this team is winning by playing great defense and killing teams on the boards, and playing efficiently on offense at a slow pace. That's how you win in the playoffs. Love that they're doing it without Fox, Olynyk, Sochan and for the most part Kornet. I think you will see offensive efficiency get even better once they all get healthy. I want to see them play better competition, but there's still sooooo much room for growth both from the overall youth learning curve and the return of the injured guys not to mention making their fucking free throws. KJ and Vassell finding roles that they can excel in has been gratifying and fun to watch, and I think you have to give a lot of credit to Mitch for that.

Then again, blah blah blah....  it's all about Wemby.

Also... has anyone looked at the NBA cup groupings? Spurs, Nuggets, Rockets, Warriors and Blazers. Nice job, league

82-0 still on the table. Just saying. GSG.

would take Fox + Sochan + 3 firsts.  Not sure if he is worth it.  He comes to play about 10% of the time.

Fox also can’t be traded until the deadline. They can’t really match salaries (on any kind of star) without trading Vassell.

They need Kornet back in the worst way. Biyambo (or whatever the fuck his name is) is hammered dog shit. Nice to see Devin back to his chucking ways. Team is doing the exact opposite of what got them to 5-0. Not passing to Victor, taking stupid shots, no communication on defense.

Well, I knew they would lose eventually. Still frustrating, though. Harper was looking great, but now he's injured. Everyone looks a step slow, Wemby looks frustrated and uninterested at this point. And the Suns can't miss.

Castle has seemed genuinely angry with Booker since the opening minute of the game.

Well, Booker is a little bitch, so I can understand that.

Suns can't hit 73% from three all game, presumably.

I'm only following online, so someone tell me if the Suns actually are being guarded. If not, maybe they can increase it to 80%.

A young road team being drooled on by the entire sports media world is always going to be subject to coming out soft and getting their collective heads kicked in. I can't imagine these guys are any more immune to that than the next bunch, especially with an inexperienced coach. Let's turn it around.

I mean, can you blame him?

Fuck you Booker you ran into Wemby's arm..you should get the foul for being a dumbass.

That’s how I would defend him. Make his awkwardness work against him.

They’re putting on a shooting clinic.

I would rather play five G-League players than have to watch that turd masquerading as a center play one more second for this team. This is the worst stint of basketball since whatever it is that you can call Zach Collin’s time with the Spurs. Give him some money for some hospitals in his country and buy him a ticket back there.Goddamn that guy sucks.

At least Castle showed up today.

In defense of Biyombo, he’s the freaking fourth string center behind Vic, Kornet and Olynyk. He should be getting Menkge Bateer like minutes. I don’t think they ever thought he’d be any sort of contributor to this team.

60% after the 3rd. Sometimes, the other team just can't miss and you just have to deal with it, I guess.

Noted, but my point still stands. This isn’t a charity, and this team has legitimate playoff aspirations. An actual fourth string player who can give forth NBA effort would be nice.

I’ll shut up about it.

Booker and lady refs, a winning combination. He is a handsome, foul-baiting devil.

This will be the blueprint going forward, pack the paint and dare this brick-laying team to shoot.

We were also playing with fire with McLaughlin getting significant minutes this year, and it showed tonight. He had some open looks missed tonight from 3. It feels a lot like the last two years with these injuries piling up. Having guys get heavy minutes that you know shouldn't be seeing the floor for a legit playoff team. Now we'll have 4 of our top 10 guys missing if Harper misses weeks.

Wemby needs to be stronger with the ball and learn how to deal with the double and triple teams. And our guys need to knock down open shots when he does pass out of those situations.

Really disappointing game tonight.

During the pre-game they showed Wemby walking toward the locker room in that Sith Lord t-shirt. His demeanor seemed off, and that carried over into his play. Yes, the Suns effectively double-teamed him, but he can usually shake defenders, find the ball, and get into a rhythm regardless. It appeared his mentality was not what it needed to be.

Everyone else, except Harper, struggled to hit open shots consistently. I hope Harper's injuries aren't serious.
