Did this team just forget how to play basketball?

Terrible game from Fox so far

I guess with Fox and Harper both healthy, you probably could afford one of them being off. But with either of them out, you desperately need points from the one who's out there. Not enough early enough from Fox tonight.

Because one of them, the really tall one who fashions himself a guard, likes to play in the three point line. Dude had like nine turnovers tonight and as well as he played, is a huge reason why the Warriors came back in the first half.

I have a love/hate relationship with his style . It fucked against the Bulls but fucked us against the Warriors

I have renounced my Mavs fandom, for the Spurs.

Through a set of unusual circumstances, I became a Mavs fan as a young kid living outside of San Antonio the year before David Robinson arrived. I stuck with it as a kid to my detriment, but I enjoyed the rivalry with the Spurs and Dirk's time in Dallas with the one title. I also loved watching Luka play and have stuck with them for decades. But the Luka trade was one of the worst decisions ever by a sports franchise. As I get older, I realize there really isn't any need to be a long suffering fan of a pro sports franchise. Why devote any attention or money to a team that so grossly shoots themselves in the dick.

We live in the SA area and my kids are Spurs fans. We were at the Rockets game and they were all going crazy for the Spurs and Wemby and I realized it's time to join up. The team's future is insanely bright. Happy to be along for the ride.

Yup. All this size, but let’s get in a three point contest with Steph Curry.

Right now, Wemby is an artist. He can do almost anything on the basketball court, so much so that it is just commonplace for him to do things no one has ever seen. Amazing shit, virtuoso stuff, young Jordan-like. He does things that can't be explained or recreated, regularly. This is all fine for now, and great entertainment. What Wemby needs to be, in order to reach his full potential, is a craftsman: someone who can produce the same product perfectly over and over again. The Wemby go-to move will be utterly unstoppable, and there will be nothing boring about doing it over and over again until the other team has to double (or triple) to stop it--and then the structure of the offense will flow from there. When/if they get there, that version of the Spurs will be absolutely dominant.

Kerr totally outclassed Mitch. So many times, in the 2nd and 3rd quarters especially, the team reverted offensively to Rec Center pickup game habits. Forcing bad shots and flashy passes instead of relying on fundamentals. That's a downside of being so young. On defense, the team allowed Golden State to take way too many uncontested threes. I agree that Sochan should have gotten more minutes. Mitch needs to figure out how to get Fox more involved on offense. The team seems to flow best when the offense runs through Wemby, and if he's doubled, he finds the open man, swing the ball to Fox so he can create his own shot, with Wemby/Castle in position to clean up and putback missed shots.

We also very clearly have a good thing going with French Vanilla. Kornet has some unbelievably open looks because the opponents are so preoccupied with Wemby. He has been such a great addition.

Sochan not playing much at all in a game where he was desperately needed does not bode well for his future with the team. They didn’t play Carter Bryant either.

Yeah I'm not sure why Sochan didn't see more time. He wasn't listed on the injury report before Wednesday's game, but neither was DV who was taken out and didn't return in Chicago due to a migraine.

Carter Bryant, well, it's a rookie that's a bit more understandable.

Maybe he's partially behind because of injuries, but things are not looking good for Sochan. Bad luck being hurt the same time Kornet was out -- those could have been some minutes he filled instead of the walking corpse that is Bismack Biyombo. But otherwise? No extension this off season. They essentially drafted his replacement in Carter Bryant. You would think there would at least be some space for him off the bench as an energy guy, but Keldon has been great in filling that role. Sochan has got to make the most out of the few minutes he does get, otherwise he's going to be seeing a lot of bench. When Harper gets back, that's even fewer overall minutes available. But it's a long season... anything can happen. I imagine at some point he will get some more run.

Regardless, need a dub against the dubs tonight. Cup game mixed in with a little revenge from Wednesday. Let's see if Mitch can make some adjustments to what they threw at Vic in the second half. Let's see if we get a better whistle and not have the Warriors jack 57 threes while also getting to the line 36 times. Let's see if Fox can find his way into the flow a little better. Let's see if the Spurs can stay out of foul trouble. GSG.

He should have gotten more run on Wednesday.

Throwing Sochan away would be so fucking stupid. Then again we're paying Fox $60M a year and Houston has fucking Durant for less than 50.

I think our FO is kind of shitty. They got bailed out by the Wemby pick and will probably get bailed out by the Harper pick.

Vassell is on the books until '29 for $27 per and he's a ball boy.

Minny has that exact contract for fucking Jaden McDaniels. Except Jaden actually makes less. Also he's one of the 60 best players in the league and DV is a bum.

That last game really pissed me off. Like - it really fucked my night up. I'm back to having serious concerns about how we are running this team.

The best offices in the league would have gotten rid of this Vassell contract and hired a real head coach last season.

We can't just be cute and win titles anymore. The West is a bloodbath.

I think the Fox trade was brilliant. Getting Kornet and Olynyk, also good. Is the roster ideal? Are the contracts ideal? Probably not, but at least we didn't trade a generational talent for a dude past his prime, who in his prime, was known for being injury prone.

Transactionally they do well I'm just concerned that there are some band-aids sitting above festering wounds that they don't have the balls to pull off.

I do have an issue with the way they draft in the late rounds. They’ve had some exceptional misses that would’ve gotten anyone else fired, but lucking into Victor has alleviated those sins. It’s hard to look at the roster when healthy and be judgmental, but it feels like it could be so much better. If they’re not going to play Sochan, at least get Bryant some minutes. I guess he’s going to the G League asap. I would prefer Vassell to go anywhere else, he has no definable basketball skill where he excels other than chucking.

I'm on the fence with Mitch. They’re 11 games in and third in the West. Not bad. There has been some worrying traits and some exceptional ones. The perimeter defense is a goddamn dumpster fire. The turnovers are shortening my life span. It doesn’t feel like they have a plan to combat the constant double teams on Victor other than having him play closer and closer to the three point line. Castle has been a revelation, however is leading the league in turnovers. Fox is starting to worry me, but it’s probably a byproduct of having him learn how to not be so ball dominant, which is also worrisome if you remember that he shared a backcourt with an all world guard and couldn’t make it work in Sacramento. Kornet has been a dream. Just a seamless fit. Tonight, I hope they learned a lot from Wednesday because that effort on the perimeter is not going to cut it.

I don't hate Vassell yet but it's pretty clear that he and JC are not NBA starting five material.

I would start:

Kornet (C)

Wemby (FC)

Barnes (F)

Castle (G)

Fox (G)

Sub out Kornet, slide Wemby to C, sub in Sochan to F around the first TV timeout

Sub out Wemby and Barnes, sub in Kornet and Olynyk between first TV timeout and second TV timeout

Sub out Fox and Castle for Harper and Keldon between first TV timeout and second TV timeout

Sub in Wemby for Olynyk after second TV timeout,

Sub in Barnes for Sochan after second TV timeout,

Sub out Keldon for Castle after second TV timeout, if he's playing poorly

Sub out Harper for DV or JC after second TV timeout, if he's playing poorly

Sub out Kornet between second TV timeout and End 1st, if possible, for Olynyk or Bryant

You can usually figure out pretty quickly if DV or JC will be hitting their 3's. Keep them off the floor if they're not hitting shots.
