DT/NT. Yup. I said it.

They stuff the run game. They clog the middle. They reduce the time DB’s have to cover. They make it easier for LB’s to shoot gaps. They are important on every single play. They charge the entire complexion of a defense.

Think back to some of the best Texas teams and they usually had strong NT/DT’s, often NFL quality.

Now look at this year’s Texas team. Good NT/DT play, but not elite, NFL quality. And as a result, Texas isn’t elite.

I’d put more NIL money on DT’s in the future if we aren’t getting the best available.

Any other position worthy of mention?

DT was my first thought as well; followed closely by center. Someone that can make the correct line calls and keep DTs out of the QB’s lap is critical to consistent offensive success.

An interesting take, for sure.

This year, we lost 4 DL in the portal and brought in 5. Has anyone bothered to compare the stats of our losses vs additions?

An elite DT is high value but you can scheme better to make-up for them to stop the run. You can’t as easily find a scheme to make up for no pass rush or bad coverage without more weakness. An elite edge rusher who can get home when rushing 4 and shutdown corner who can take away an option means you can put more bodies on the run problem.

So my vote is pass rusher, CB, then OT. Serviceable at DT will be OK.

In the NFL it is QB, QB, QB, QB, LT

But in college it is QB, C, MLB aka all the brain positions that can tell other players where to line up.

LT has a strong argument given it protects most QB’s.

I used to think Edge, but they aren’t involved in a lot of plays, so I discounted that.

Shutdown CB has an argument, but I can only think of maybe a dozen ever who were so good they shut down half the field. So, that’s trying to find a unicorn like Deion.
