This may be my second favorite Dear Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude. This show is solid, but it reaffirms my thoughts that East Coast shows are better. I don’t know why, but I have big lean east.

I love it when one of my favorite show's anniversary is on a weekend.  The show has terrific sound!!

Speaking of anniversaries, I watched this one live on PPV. Still a noob, it was unofficially my 3rd show. It was my introduction to the summer solstice show, which was a thing.

Now to move a little off topic, six years later I drove down to Cincinnati to see if Phish made a big deal out of the solstice. They did not. But it was still a unique and awesome show and there’s a really good amateur video with great sound documenting the band in their youth when the energy was off the charts. I saw this show and the next night in Columbus (which was later released officially as Live Phish 10, amazing show and I had 3rd row center seats, the best I could get being first in line at the box office when they went on sale). The next day I boarded a plane to Las Vegas for three nights of the Dead at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. The contrast in energy between the two bands was stark. I already had tickets for the Dead’s shows at Deer Creek and Buckeye Lake. Buckeye Lake ‘94 was my last Dead show and I hopped on over to the Phish train after that. Happy I missed the ugliness of Deer Creek the following year. When I heard of Jerry’s passing I was sad, but not terribly surprised, and I had already moved on.

So here’s another another anniversary show which I’ve posted before in the Phish thread but I’ll post it here in case anyone is curious. The audio is excellent. Give it a little time for the video to kick in. It’s sometimes choppy but mostly it’s a pretty solid amateur video. If you watch the whole thing and if you haven’t seen my post about it in the Phish thread, there’s a big surprise partway through, before the end of the first set.

Oregon hosting Grateful Dead game against Wisky.

https://goducks.com/news/2025/7/30/football-autzen-to-host-grateful-ducks-game-oct-25

Spoiler

Oregon's football game against Wisconsin will be a "tie-dye out" in the stands of Autzen Stadium.

By: Rob Moseley

EUGENE, Ore. — The sounds of the Grateful Dead echoed throughout Autzen Stadium a total of 10 times between 1974 and 1994, recapitulated in 2018 by the current incarnation of the iconic jam band, Dead & Company.

This October, those spirits will awaken. The UO football program's matchup with Wisconsin on Oct. 25 will call for a "tie-dye out" of the stadium by fans, as the university introduces a first-of-its-kind "Grateful Ducks" game at Autzen.

The Grateful Dead community is in the midst of celebrating the band's 60th anniversary, including with a three-night run by Dead & Company in the band's hometown of San Francisco this weekend. We look forward to celebrating this anniversary at the UO football game against the Badgers in October.

In all, the Dead played on campus at the University of Oregon more than 20 times. The great music and good vibes from those shows will be rekindled on Oct. 25, with sights and sounds inspired by the Grateful Dead blending with the pageantry of an Autzen Stadium football Saturday for all the "Grateful Ducks" in attendance.

"Grate" seats for the game are available while supplies last via GoDucks.com/FBTix. Co-branded merchandise featuring the Ducks and the Dead will be available for pre-order soon at The Duck Store, before arriving in stores at a later date.

Class Trip, which has previously produced merchandise merging the Dead and the Ducks, has produced a fresh line of tie-dye apparel for the occasion. The iconic dancing bears and "steal your face" logo of the band and the unmistakable mirth of The Duck will join forces for this first-of-its-kind collaboration available at the Duck Store

More information regarding gameday and experiences for fans will be made available as we approach gameday.

Coincidentally, the students at Badger basketball games refer to themselves as Grateful Red and they wear tie dyed shirts. Should see a few of those in the stands in Autzen.

I highly recommend taking a solid dose of mushrooms, putting on a good set of headphones and listening to this on repeat.

Listen to the whole album. It’s a good starting point for anyone. Late 60’s Dead rules and has a flavor all its own. It’s foundational. They didn’t have as large of a repertoire as they did in later years and the improvisational aspect was new and constituted more of the show. The songs are great but it’s the departures from the songs that make the Dead the Dead. If you don’t get that then you really don’t get the Dead.

It’s an approach.

In a bookend I came here to post some tasty improvisational highlights during GD60. Keeping things real. I feel confident that the Grateful Dead ethos will be kept alive long after they’re gone.

I hope you're right, but I don't know whether anyone can fill Mickey's shoes when it comes to Drums and Space.

Trey certainly did what he does and let the groove settle in before finding his place in it (rather than trading solos).  Just a level of patience that has been ingrained in him over the last forty plus years of playing with the same three people.

I know your days of seeing Phish are behind you, but this past summer tour has been one of many career peaks for them.  The two Austin shows were outstanding and, apparently, were not even among the best of this summer's offerings.

That would have been the smart thing to do.  Instead, I listened to the one 23 minute song 7 times in a row while touring the galaxy.

I still have more labeling to do. And I need to order more double-wide jewel cases. And I don’t know exactly why I ordered the discs like this, in chronological order from the bottom up and right-to-left. Probably has something to do with how I originally ordered my early 60’s discs in a shoe box. But I finally condensed all my boots into two big boxes. The only post-Brent show is one I attended. A bunch of my bootleg discs have been replaced by official releases. Some like the Red Rocks shows on 7/7-8/78 haven’t. Those shows are split between the 2 boxes.

Above the Dean Dome show in ‘93 on the bottom left in the first pic are 4 discs of acid test recordings, then immediate post-Jerry work — The Other Ones — leading up to the NYE show at HJK that Phil missed (so TOO couldn’t perform) because of his liver transplant. (Not shown is the KVHW show from the upstairs ballroom.) After that are Jerry band projects Legion of Mary and so on. Then Bobby solo/side projects (Kingfish, Bob & Rob, Ratdog, even Bobby solo acoustic), then Phil & Friends. I used to have more Phil & Friends boots. At some point I purged about a shoe box full because I wasn’t listening to them. Here you can see two different 10-disc sets of AUD recordings from the 4/15-17/99 Phil & Phriends shows from the Warfield. Not shown are three double wide cases of SBD recordings for those shows that mostly get played nowadays. I won’t discard those other recordings, though. They’re both good and they were such important shows that I feel I should hang onto them. Coincidentally, the three cases for the SBDs are the only shows I labeled in blue, red, and green other than the run of shows at the Ark in Boston 30 years prior.

Nobody caught this goof. That’s okay, I only recently discovered it. What’s really crazy is that I didn’t notice the labeling error until after I cropped this photo. I just noticed I had two copies of the same show. Mis-labeling one tray as San Francisco is probably how I missed it in the first place. The whole thing is very strange and embarrassing. But someone will benefit because I have an extra recording to give away. And it’s a stellar show.

It must have seemed like a perfect setlist for winter in the Rockies. It was released as Road Trips Vol. 4, No. 3. The cover art captured the mood.

Cleaning house on some intended comments. Remember I was revisiting DP29. All of Dick’s Picks are outstanding and that should go without saying. Here’s one item that caught my attention while listening in my car. Not something I would normally comment on. But Jerry’s picking on Me & My Uncle on 5/21/77 hit home. He tore it up.

We also got his uncle lying there by the side of the road instead of his dead ass lying there.

On disc 2 of that Lakeland show there are unlisted bonus tracks from 10/11/73. There’s a killer Dancin’ followed by Dire Wolf. The Dire Wolf is fine. Kudos for filling up space on the disc. But the Dancin’ is huge. It crushes the one from 5/19/77, the first night of the release. (Which is also fine, of course.)

Oh! I’m also happy to report that I received my 50th anniversary release of Blues for Allah on Tuesday. It’s most excellent. My only complaint is that on disc 2, the first of the studio rehearsals has an abrupt halt in Franklin’s. Jerry’s complaining about something, I didn’t catch it. But it’s a serious case of jammus interruptus and that’s not something I’ll want to revisit. The second half of the disc is fine, especially the middle part where we get a complete Help > Slip > Frank. The monster Blues For Allah from the SNACK benefit on 3/23/75 I already owned on the Beyond Description bonus disc (a fantastic compilation) but it didn’t hurt to revisit that sublime jam fest.

Disc 3 with live performances from the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA on 6/21-22/76 brings it all home. That’s all solid and makes for a great celebration of the material on that album, easily my favorite of all their studio work. That’s the first of the 50th anniversary releases I’ve purchased.
