Will it *ever* return to reason? In the very long run, I think there is still hope.
But I will be 50 later this year. And I do not believe that this country is fixable in the next, say, 20 years. I believe that Fox News has won for at least a generation, and the cabal has only begun to scratch the surface of what they're up to. So, I am actively scouting out retirement destinations and learning Spanish.
I cannot say that I ever loved this country. But I did not take it for granted, either. I don't go in for patriotism or religion, so I was never proud to be American, but I damn sure did feel lucky to be American.
But, to me this is just a place. And places change, like everything else. It was a good place for most of my life, and I'm thankful for that chapter. But this country is morphing into a place that I don't want to be a part of. And no, I do not feel obligated to stay and fight for this place. It's just a place, and there are many others, and many of them are beautiful and cost a fraction as much to live in. So, I'll retire about 5 years earlier in one of those places, and I'll have a chapter there. And I'm looking forward to that.
Because the place I grew up in is already gone.
(None of this is meant to contradict the OP, whose feeling I also understand. Just spit balling a different take)
