  1. My wife reminded me that the last time she went through her mom's pantry and cleaned it out, there were spices and other things that had been expired for more than 15 years. What's amazing is that her parents had moved at least 3 times during that 15 years, so not only were the spices etc expired, but she had actually packed them, moved them, and unpacked them at least 3 times.
  2. If this is true, and the Texas NIL did offer enough life-changing money for CS to choose us, then I say thank God and it's about damn time. We are finally in a position to put our biggest strengths -- money, donors, and alumni networks -- to good use. Fuck the low rent SEC. And honestly if the money is going to help his family manage his little brother's challenges, even more reason to celebrate. Hook 'em.
  3. Well, we now know Simmons is still alive and, potentially, leaving his house. Quality intel.
  4. maybe that explains why van Buren was such a goddamn fucking disgraceful shitstain (I know nothing about van Buren)
  5. Anyone who uses the word "right?" at the end of every sentence. Anyone who walks into my office and says "I love what you've done with the place." Anyone who brings two large dogs to work and lets them run free among the offices. PS - I hate my co-worker.
  6. I've gotten most of my weekend shit done during Longhorn football games for the past 12+ years because I've been either too nervous or too pissed to just sit and watch the games. Lotta nervous energy. I'm really hoping for some nice old fashioned ass kicking this fall so I can laze around, drink, and watch the game in peace. Bonus will be not terrifying my pets and children when I scream at the television.
  7. I can't. My probation officer won't let me. I wasn't saying anything about that specific serial pedophile. He may well have a bent brain. I was responding to the comment that "they can't be cured," which was true for a long time but is no longer an absolute truth. I work in mental health, and although this isn't my area I have many colleagues on the academic and treatment sides that do good effective work reducing recidivism with sexual offenders.
  8. This isn't an absolute. Offenders of all types, sexual and non-sexual, can change. Treatment for sex offenders can be effective, depending on the person, circumstances, treatment modality, etc.
  9. I mean seriously, how is that FDNY helmet not just some sort of practical joke?
  10. Yeah, I was fortunate (?) that when my dad had about a year left from his terminal illness that his mind stayed sharp enough and I had enough time to go through the house, room by room, and talk to him about what was what. It was really good to have that opportunity. Stuff I thought was important was actually useless, and stuff I thought was meaningless was actually important for sentimental reasons. I honestly don't remember a lot of what he said about this or that, but the time together was valuable and the reality is that I look back on that time together fondly, even in the midst of the hell and agony surrounding it.
  11. My in-laws go to Dairy Queen with a bunch of other olds, take up several tables, and order a few kid's meals between them. Not enough for everyone to have their own, just a few to share. And only on Monday evenings because that's when they get the weekly senior discount. What a bunch of assholes. And I can't wait to do the same thing when I get to that point.
  12. I sent my wife that Neyor pic. It'll either get her in the mood for later, or she will no longer have interest in me. It's a gamble.
  13. That was the worst police dog I've ever seen. Attacks the cop (relentlessly) and then runs past the perp into the woods, only to begin attacking the perp after he's already apprehended.
  14. Makes quidditch players look like fucking ironman triathletes
  15. This might be the thread winner
  16. There are some amazing things about Central Texas, many have been mentioned. The lakes, the food, the music, HEB, others. I spent the first 20+ years of my life there, and graduated from UT with all of my friends. All but one have moved out of state and are never looking back (including me). I miss those great things, and at one point we thought about moving back to central Texas, but those things aren't worth it anymore. Austin used to be a bit of an oasis from the rest of Texas, but not anymore. Hell, my sister is as "Austin-proud" as anyone I've ever met, and she's packing up and relocating to New Mexico. The politics, the heat, the business yes / citizen no stance...it's just become an increasingly bad place to live. We visit our families a couple of times a year and then get the hell out. Also surfing sucks, don't come out here and try it 😉
  17. Notification on the Amtrak page. I think I found the cause of the heat-related delay.
  18. My parents passed away long ago, but my in-laws are pretty awesome. FIL grew up growing some wheat and mostly dirt on farm in Kansas and eventually became an international pilot for one of the big three American carriers. MIL beat cancer and is the rock of the family. They are always there for their kids and grandkids. Still it's weird to see them age. When my wife causally mentioned that our daughter asked us for money for the school's book fair, FIL just said "That's because y'all don't go to church enough." Uhhhh....
