  1. Rant about light pollution: Even on clear nights, I can only see the brightest meteors basically directly overhead. Doesn't help that my neighbors always have outdoor lights blasting (front and back yards) all night. And who made the decision that neighborhoods need streetlights glaring every 100 feet, or that gas stations need to be brighter than a supernova? People think it's "safer" to have everything lit up like it's goddamn daytime; shit, that just lets the crooks see better.
  2. It's really enraging (at least to me) that we've lost control of our phone system. I don't understand why we can't implement security protocols and features to prevent spoofing and make Caller ID actually work as it was intended. I have Nomorobo, but I still get tons of calls from "Paul at US Home Solar" or "We have a special offer for AT&T Customers" or whatever that spoof local numbers and get through the system.
  3. When the Manor Expressway (toll portion of 290E) was being built, a contractor working from an outdated set of plans built a bunch of enormous support columns to the wrong height. Version control is a bitch sometimes.
  4. Oh god, my brain must be turning to mush. I saw articles about the sprint race quali format and assumed it was in place for this week's race. Thanks for clearing that up.
  5. I'm pretty confused--was there/is there qualifying today (Friday) for the sprint race tomorrow? Can find nothing about TV time/channel coverage for the qualifying that happened (?) today. I see some Practice stuff for Friday, but are they calling today's qualis part of the "practice" sessions?
  6. Yeah I would not want to be in the Hondo, Castroville, or SA area now. Best of luck to any Surly denizens there.
  7. There's almost nothing left of that 911 in front of the rear axle, it's just completely compacted into the tree. Unless the front broke free and landed somewhere out of the photo I found.
  8. After qualifying for each race is finished, F1 should roll a D20. If this "Chaos Roll" comes up 13, they invert the field for the race start.
  9. Seeing articles that New York lost a congressional seat by only 89 people. Damn, that's close.
  10. Some of those pieces are bigger than I would have expected. I guess dogs don't chew so good.
  11. A lot of these killers off themselves anyway before being arrested, so I don't see increased punishment working very well as a deterrent. Plus we still have that whole eighth amendment thing that we'd have to repeal first. I know we aren't 'sposed to talk about these losers much, but apparently this guy was a big brony (My Little Pony fan) and posted something on social media about being with Applejack in the afterlife.
  12. Up "only" 8% in 78754. I almost feel left out.
  13. Can anybody recommend a live weather radar website that doesn't suck shit? For some time now, the animated radar on KXAN's website, and other local TV channels' websites, all seem to use the same app or codec, which works terribly on my PC. They try to play back 6-8 hours of radar history, which is pointless--I only want to see the last hour or two. Starting 6 or 8 hours back means I have to wait forever to get to the current radar image. Trying to skip ahead using the slider bar doesn't do shit. Doesn't matter if I use Chrome or Firefox.
  14. I'm gonna start asking all my ladies to sign an affidavit of consensus (pre- and post-coital) and pass a written competency test before allowing them to experience my erotic talents.
  15. I'm not sure if this fits as a Larry David thing, but I recall a generally embarrassing event from my youth. When I was a freshman, I was living on the 19th floor of Dobie. One morning my roommate had gone to class or something so I had the room to myself. It's a quiet morning, no one's around, I have a ragged copy of Hustler that someone left in the laundry room. I figured I would take advantage of this privacy and release some pent-up sexual energy. So I go to work, feeling pretty secure in my privacy. After I'd been at it a little while, I hear a soft thump or squeak from the window (19th floor). Window washer, busted. (Actually, he gave no discernible sign that he saw me, and Dobie's windows are tinted, so maybe I got away with it. Still, I was startled and embarrassed.)
  16. Holy shit this is horrible: AP source: [Former] NFL player Phillip Adams killed 5, then himself https://news.yahoo.com/2-children-among-5-killed-010718996.html
  17. I'm terrible at gardening & landscape work, and don't much care for it, so I'm looking for a full-service nursery, garden center, landscaper, whatever, who can dig out some (five) dead Hawthorn shrubs and replant with something similar (probably just boxwood or yaupon holly). The hardest part of the job would be digging out the old shrubs, which I'm sure have a well-established root system. So far I've emailed four places in/near Austin to try to get an estimate, and no one has even replied to my emails or called me back. Probably all busy doing $20,000 jobs for rich techbros or something. Any recommendations for a nursery or landscaper who will take on a small(ish) job?
  18. Does the Governor's order against "vaccine passports" (I hate that term) just apply to government entities? So, I would hope, a private business such as a restaurant or retail store could still limit customers to "vaccinated only" if they so choose? If a restaurant can kick you out for not wearing a tie, I think it's more than reasonable that they can refuse to serve you if you can't show a record of vaccination. I know I'd be more likely to frequent establishments if I knew that the other customers were vaccinated. Of course, I fully expect a world of shit to come down on businesses or companies that try to implement such a policy, plus the general difficulty of figuring out if someone's record of vaccination is authentic.
  19. I got Moderna #2 yesterday, and getting out of bed this morning was haaaarrd. Achy all over and a little feverish. Right shoulder is angry. But at least no severe chills or headache.
  20. You can file this under "worst MS Paint" job ever, but
  21. I don't know much about biology or immunology, it's been 30+ years since my AP Bio days in high school. But maybe someone can explain to me, in layman's terms, why the Covid-19 vaccines (while still quite effective in most people) still allow a small percentage of immunized people to develop infection? Is this the result of their own immune systems, even after vaccination, being deficient in some way? Or is it due to some aspect of the vaccine itself not quite being able to replicate the behavior or characteristics of the actual, live virus?
  22. Need more pics to see if stained.
  23. Evacuate the area and drop a nuke on it.
  24. Maybe we could lure Tom Penders out of retirement for Runnin' Horns II?
  25. Jeez. I remember when the limits for specs was 12 inches and like 20 fish.
