  1. <bear trap>Well, Chief Kunkel has dementia and wouldn’t be able to do any follow-up conversation</bear trap>
  2. Interesting couple of very frank segments just now about Greggo’s history with Rhyner. And tomorrow they’ll be on live together 3-7 - at a remote. That’s definitely one way to counterprogram White Elephant Day. 🍿 Edited to add that the show has been much more listenable with Danny in the mix, especially when they’re doing more sports and music now instead of strained lists and topic-wheel random banter. Sounds like they’re also introducing their own versions of E-News and CQH. Smart to make the show a little more clock/format-driven.
  3. Kind of funny how they’re now trying to sing over Danny’s voice to kind of hide it on segment opens, ad spots, etc.
  4. Since WRR is now all-Classical Christmas until Jan 1, that should help them in the ratings.
  5. It varies. Some stations put their streams on a separate PPM encoder (which bakes a non-audible signal into the broadcast that the Nielsen people meters pick up), while others put both broadcast and stream on the same encoder so they're all counted together. You can tell the stations that encode separately on the ratings reports because the streams show up with "STR", as in "KTCK-STR". Based on the latest 12+ reports, Cumulus and IHeart have combined the reporting for their stations while Audacy has not. https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb024
  6. Honestly, if they'd mix in more sports and get shows on a fixed rundown I think they'd be better off. I love hearing Rhyner in the afternoons but the endless parade of lists and random banter just isn't meaty enough.
  7. I don’t mean just this season. I mean over the past two decades.
  8. I realize We’re Surly and this is how we’re supposed to respond, but interest in the Frogs is definitely higher than it’s been. Ratings-wise, their games have done well nationally (https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-tv-ratings/), and their profile has risen - the school has seen record applications and giving, and they’re getting more publicity than ever. Winning works.
  9. Baylor is as hyped as ever, at home, already showing multiple looks on the ground, with TCU struggling to stop the run, and it’s still 14-14? Yeah, bad take. Are they NC material? Probably not. But not shitty and Duggan isn’t a “scrub ass”.
  10. DOMi and JD Beck were just nominated for two Grammys, one for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and even bigger, for Best New Artist. Cool to see that for some Texans (JD, anyway, who hails from Allen). They also got the Tiny Desk treatment:
  11. Same thing up in Wylie as well - similar slate of far-right candidates with outside funding - and they were all soundly defeated, even in a relatively conservative community.
  12. Finally made it down to Spider Mountain this weekend, and it definitely lives up to the hype. Given that I'm still on a hardtail, I mainly stuck to the greens; I tried all but one of the blues and made it down one of them without stopping, but had to walk certain points on the rest (and honestly, there's too many stairstep rocks to get any kind of speed on a hardtail without it being so rough that I almost lost grip on my handlebars a couple times). Overall, it provides some gorgeous Hill Country scenery, seems to be well run and has a decent bar on property with wood-fired pizzas and a solid beer selection. I also learned the lift is the old Lift 1 at Taos Ski Valley (replaced in 2018), which is pretty cool. We topped off the day at Barrow Brewing in Salado before heading back to Dallas. Great day, and hope to do it again soon.
  13. It was full at end of 1st half, but they have those massive lounges under each side that fans disappear into and don’t leave. Sure, they’re really nice, but they don’t belong in a stadium. It’s stupid and detracts from what the experience is supposed to be.
  14. That’s a tidy narrative, but it’s not entirely true. Sanders was already dealing with a shoulder injury going into the game versus TCU, as well as Martinez for Kansas State. Other than the Gabriel thing, most of those were pretty much injuries you’d expect in the flow of a physical game.
  15. This feels like Musk, basically forced into the deal, is trying to (clumsily) execute a McKinsey-type strategic plan or hedge fund-style flip. Massively cut budget via extreme layoffs, develop new revenue streams to inflate value (like the check mark idiocy), make himself look good and then ultimately sell it at a profit. So far, it's not going so well.
  16. This is a heartbreaking read for anyone who has worked on a team you loved (and felt like your work meant something): https://twitter.com/hashtag/LoveWhereYouWorked
  17. Cowboy Theater 1310 used to be a regular thing back in the old days. Nice that they're bringing it back.
  18. Whitt will hit big on a scoop and then follow it up with a lot of speculation disguised as an actual scoop - same shit he's been doing for years. Jake and Dan are smart and may have floated that out there to help their bottom line at Cumulus. I can't see them moving unless the Freak gave them drive time, and I doubt either of them want mornings (plus, I doubt the Freak would dump its morning show that quickly). But who knows anymore.
  19. My prediction: - Despite Collier's resume, affability and general competence, he'll still lose to Patrick by a sizable margin in the general. - Patrick will immediately zero in on (1) vouchers and (2) ruining the political careers of any R who endorsed (or even thought about endorsing) Collier. - He'll get the Empower Texans crew to throw money at even worse candidates to primary all those Rs. - The worse candidates will win the next primary, and the TxLeg will get even worse. Rinse, repeat. I'd like to think I'm wrong, but prior history suggests otherwise.
  20. Nope. Paul in Romans 1 was referring to practices relating to idolatry, which included some homosexual acts tied to idol worship - all tied up in Roman society. Night and day from loving, committed relationships. It’s no different than debased heterosexual acts. Plus, modern translations get it wrong anyway and jump right to “teh gays are evil”. As with many things in the Bible, it’s not black and white.
  21. I got in the car this morning to take my kid to practice before school and the Freak was on - and it was some chucklehead breaking down Coastal Carolina vs. James Madison. I kid you not. I realize the morning show starts at 7, but there are probably a lot of people who are regular radio listeners in the 6am hour and this feels like a total giveup on their part.
  22. Ok, the Sunset Lounge segment was finally what I’d been wanting to hear. It felt right, from the jazz bed music to the easy banter. This is what I want from the afternoon show. And Mike closing with the “stay hard, keep jamming and we’ll see ya” was shocking but also appropriate.
