  1. The circular white electronic appliance in the pic is a sound machine used for white noise to help drown outside noise as a sleep aid. They are often used for baby/kids rooms but adults use them too. That particular model is made by a company called Homedics, and is, as I said, a raging piece of shit. DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF SHIT: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Relaxing-Soothing-Charging-Auto-Off/dp/B00A2JBMRE/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1YNNC5UOFG4VJ&keywords=homedics+sound+machine&qid=1670773475&sprefix=homedics+sound+machine%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzRzNWWVlENVhRUkpQJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODkzMDU2Mlc1OUZVNU9JUkQxRyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzU5NTgyMkVVOVFDSFlTMkZNUyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= Homedics also makes other products my wife has purchased (humidifier, room air purifier), and they are all pieces of shit.
  2. That sound machine is a RAGING piece of shit. My wife has bought 3 of them and all 3 had the volume/power knob go out within 6 months. Fuck Homedics.
  3. Just now: “Does the microwave use 60 seconds for a minute?” She has a Master’s in Accounting.
  4. I make my Korean wife keep a separate mini fridge for kimchi (and any other associated stinky ass foods she likes).
  5. Javier and Abreu look fair to me. I would not make that offer to Garcia or Framber or Urquidy although they look reasonable. Tucker’s looks reasonable but I don’t think he would accept. The Pena offer is way too low, add at least $50M.
  6. Javier should be the primary target for an extension. Abreu and Pena would be next although likely harder to gauge. It’s a shame Meyers didn’t take charge of CF last season because he’d also be a prime extension candidate.
  7. Short term it will serve them to keep beating the fear drum. Boomers will keep that model viable over the next 5-15 years. I consider it likely that if the GOP runs anyone other than Trump in 2024, they will take back the presidency and probably also control congress. Medium term they will have to do something different. Espousing actual fiscal responsibility (I.e. balanced budget amendment) and actual border security (I.e. presenting an actual plan for immigration reform) along with legalizing drugs would be a place to start. They are already doing a good job of outflanking the Dems for the Hispanic vote and they should continue doing that. It is hard to see the current version of the GOP being a successful party post ~2035.
  8. Not even close. He’s 3 years away from $300M+. And he’s gotten big money from the draft and from this seasons new bonus; he doesn’t need the money. Yep.
  9. I worked at RadioShack in college and one Christmas they made us play a DVD of boy band types doing Xmas music, so I had to listen to/watch Aaron Carter almost every day for 90 days. I was not a fan. But even then I remember thinking he probably lived a pretty depressing life, and that was at his “peak”. I just went and read his Wikipedia page, and it’s sad as fuck. Sounds like his parents probably weren’t great people. He found out his parents were divorcing an hour before he filmed his Cribs episode, which is hard to watch for a lot of reasons: RIP.
  10. $68M/4yrs is about the top of what Contreras should be worth. I’d be fine with that deal depending on what the terms were for the 5th year option. But it certainly would not look like a bargain.
  11. My first car (1996) was a 1987 Pontiac Parisienne. What a piece of shit. Wire poking out of the back seat. Drooping headliner. Zero acceleration. Rusted hood. Mediocre A/C.
  12. Varsho is an insanely good fit for this Astros roster due to his hitting profile and defensive versatility. I can’t think of a single attainable player I would rather Houston add.
  13. He projects for a league average bat (100 wRC+). As bad as he was last year he still only struck out in 12.5% of his pa. As a full time 1B he projects to 0.6 fwar. Even if he were a well below average defender and only able to play 1B/3B then he would still have value. And there’s logic to the idea that your 12th or 13th position player has more impact in the clubhouse than on the field. Im not lobbying for Houston to sign him; I wouldn’t do it if I were their GM. But for <$8M and no commitment of significant playing time, I don’t think it’s a terrible decision.
  14. Gurriel would probably be solid taking over Diaz’s role outside of playing SS. Diaz played in 92 games last year: 28 in LF, 22 2B, 18 SS, 10 at 3B, 7 at DH, 6 at 1B, and 1 in RF. So if Gurriel is willing to sign a cheap 1 year deal with the expectation of playing 60-80 games, he can be a good value.
  15. Places I used to go: RadioShack, Blockbuster, Hastings, Camelot Music, Tower Records, Bennigans, Black Eyed Pea, Furr’s Cafeteria, Luby’s, Jarman Shoes, Foleys, Montgomery Wards, Chelsea Street Pub, Corn Dog 7, Gold Mine arcade, Tilt arcade, Handy Andy, Bag-And-Save, K-Mart, Woolworth’s, Sears, Dunlap’s, Weiner’s, Bealls My parents always talk about Burger Chef and Hamburgers By Gourmet.
  16. Seeing Trump stroke out and die while giving a speech at a MAGA rally would be the most enjoyable thing I’ve ever seen on television. Like, however satisfying watching King Joffrey feel the poison was, watching Trump die while his minions watch live would be infinitely better. However sad or horrified the bulk of the nation was when they first saw the Zapruder film in 1963, video of Trump dying would be the opposite of that.
  17. I don’t think anyone would want to pen him in as an everyday LF. But offensively he would still rate as a well above average hitter for that position; he projects to have similar production to Haniger or Brantley or Benintendi. I think the idea with Houston signing Contreras would be they want to bring him in without displacing Maldonado as the primary catcher, and obviously you don’t sign someone like Contreras unless you intend for him to be an everyday player. So if he’s only going to get 50-60 games at catcher, how do you get him 70-80 games elsewhere. If he can get 55 games at catcher, 55 at DH, and then be a serviceable backup at 1B or LF and get 10 games at each of those positions, you get his bat in the lineup full time without displacing any established starters. I personally think Contreras would be fine playing 10-20 games in LF in MMP while Alvarez DHs or takes a day off. Especially considering that if the game situation changes you can always put in a better defender like Dubon or Meyers. Contreras for $70M/4yrs or less would be a really good deal for the Astros.
  18. I also saw something where MLB sold some tech to Disney that will result in a $30M windfall for each team this year. Between that and the extra revenue for winning the World Series there’s no reason Houston shouldn’t field a top 5 payroll, which means going well over the first threshold. Another thing to note is that the Astros spent well below their budget in 2022; that’s one of the reasons Click was fired. So they should have leftover money as well. Finally, there’s still a huge potential windfall lingering out there from Crane’s lawsuit against McLane for the tv network snafu. All that being said, I don’t expect Houston to go over $230M in payroll by opening day. I think they’ll sign 1-2 more 3rd tier contracts (in the $10-$20 AAV range) and maybe 1-2 4th tier contracts (<$10M AAV). I don’t expect them to sign Verlander. But it’s certainly feasible if Crane wants to go there.
  19. Should have roughly $30M to add to the 2023 payroll before hitting the first CBT threshold.
  20. Of course it all depends on price, but Nimmo, Conforto, and Benintendi all look like great fits. If the prices shake out correctly, the right players are open to lesser roles, and Crane is in fuck it mode, I could see an opening day roster of: 2B Altuve SS Pena LF Alvarez 3B Bregman RF Tucker 1B Abreu CF Nimmo* C Alfaro* DH Brantley* Bench: Maldonado, Gurriel, Dubon, McCormick Rotation: Valdez, McCullers, Javier, Garcia, Urquidy, Brown Bullpen: Chafin*, Maton, Stanek, Neris, Montero, Abreu, Pressly Optioned: Lee, Diaz, Hensley, Meyers, Matijevic, Perez, Whitley, Bielak, Blanco, Dubin, France, Mushinski, Taylor, Martinez Traded: Paredes
  21. 2023 projections: Abreu: .276/.349/.450, wOBA .348 Altuve: .274/.351/.460, wOBA .352 Imagine adding a hitter of Altuve’s caliber to last seasons lineup. Nimmo, Brantley, Conforto, Benintendi, Gallo, Profar, and Bellinger are the lefty OF bats that make the most sense for Houston’s next move. Adam Frazier and Robbie Grossman are lesser dark horse options. Mullins, Reynolds, Varsho, Yaz, Corbin Carroll, Alek Thomas, Happ, Santander, Cavan Biggio, Jake McCarthy, Josh Lowe, Vidal Brujan, Austin Meadows, Max Kepler, Trevor Larnach, Gavin Sheets, and Jake Fraley representpotentially available lefty OF trade options.
  22. If Angilau comes back: 1st string: Banks, Angilau, Majors, Campbell, Conner 2nd string: Karic, Hutson, Neto, Agbo, Williams If Angilau doesn’t come back it probably makes sense to go get one interior portal guy. Either way the OL should be a major strength next season.
  23. Assuming: Ford, Sweat, Collins, and Watts come back No players who played a lot transfer out Anthony Hill commits to Texas The defense will be extremely good and possibly championship caliber. Sorrell, Collins, Sweat, Murphy, Broughton, and all the Fr/So on the line. Ford, Hill, and (hopefully) an elite portal addition at LB. Watts, Barron, Thompson, and all the Fr/So at DB. LB is the real question. Losing Ford and not adding Hill and/or a good portal guy would be devastating.
  24. Why are you posting a bunch of screen shots of the game score in the “in between games” thread?
