  1. The Reuters article about Ukraine ready to sue for peace is disappointing. This thing gonna end in 1 fucking day with Putin getting everything he wants (Ukrainian recognition of the “independent” territories, Ukrainian leadership resigning, formal rejection of NATO membership by Ukraine, and installation of a puppet govt.)?

    Russia

That article says Germany gets half of its NG from Russia, and that NG accounts for 1/4 of Germanys energy. So we’re talking about needing to replace 12% of their energy? That sounds doable on the surface.
  3. I am ignorant on this topic. Why wouldn’t we just subsidize Germanys purchase of our NG until they get their nuclear generation capacity such that they don’t need Russia? Seems like whatever the cost, it would be worth it to prevent WW3 and show Putin we will do what it takes to keep him in line.
  4. Houston has excellent SP depth so they could sustain losing McCullers for a good chunk of the season and probably be ok, but not having him for the playoffs would be fuckin devastating. Seems odd that if he knew he needed TJ he would not have already had the surgery (or at least announced it).
  5. Huffines looks like he lost the One Ring a few years ago.
  6. My lineup would be: 1. Hodo CF 2. Daly 2B 3. Todd RF 4. Melendez 1B 5. Campbell DH 6. Messinger 3B 7. Ardoin C 8. Kennedy LF 9. Faltine SS
  7. I would be very surprised if unemployment got above 8% anytime in the next 20 months. Getting laid off when unemployment is low is far less devastating than when it’s high.
  8. Nah. There will be some pullback over the next 3-4 months but at the first sign of prices stabilizing shit will take off again. This is all the result of the pandemic impact on supply chain and worker shortage. That shit’ll buff out.
  9. This can go one of two ways. Either he’s a good dad, and his sleep-deprived, distracted, worried ass is about to turn in by far the worst season of his career. Or he’s a piece of shit, in which case he will run to baseball as a justified escape from the horrors of parenthood, in which case he’s gonna be AL MVP. Here’s hoping he’s a POS.
  10. Seems unlikely another variant since that doesn’t seem to be the story anywhere else. Need to give it another handful of days to see, but for now I’m thinking/hoping it’s just a lag on this last wave.
  11. I think Texans would vote for a white Christian male Dem who was left of center on shit like education, universal healthcare, infrastructure, gender equality, and taxing the wealthy. But they’d HAVE to be practically a 2A nut and talk tough on the border. So yes, a unicorn. And even then, the unicorn would only have a chance if a 3rd party candidate siphoned off the Trumpers.
  12. A “good” (read: consistently moderate, and basically right of center on guns and the border) Democratic candidate would have a chance to beat Abbott in a race with a 3rd party candidate like Huffines. Beto is just not a viable candidate for governor of Texas, under any scenario. Just being young(ish), eating at Whataburger, having been in a band, skateboarding, and speaking Spanish don’t mean shit once you say something stupid like “hell yes we are coming for your guns”.
  13. I still think Abbott would win, but Huffines going 3rd party would definitely make it interesting.
  14. I use Austin RealPros to manage my 2 rentals in Austin. They’ve been good to me, although I am not knowledgeable/experienced to really know the difference.
  15. Polling has proven to be pretty much worthless, but for now it looks 47-49 with 4 toss-ups: GA, NV, AZ, PA. I think Kelly is in good shape in Arizona. So Warnock, Fetterman, and Masto hold the keys to continuing the Democratic Senate majority. Not that they’ve had an effective majority with how Manchin and Sinema have behaved.
  16. Breaking Bad doesn’t work with any other person on earth as Walter White. Cranston is the ONLY person who could have made that what it was. Others I feel the same about: Foster and Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs Robbins and Freeman in Shawshank In hindsight, the Star Wars prequel trilogy desperately needed a huge name (DiCaprio?) as Anakin Skywalker, as the only way it would have been possible to convince Lucas to do the rewrites necessary to have those films not suck would have been if the actor had been like “these lines suck and if you don’t rewrite them I’ll tank the movie.”
  17. Next to Its A Wonderful Life, BoB is the greatest art ever put on film. As I get older, with each viewing I am more struck by just how young those guys were. Just kids, with the weight of all humanity on their shoulders. Life has gotten dramatically easier for people and generally better for everybody over the last 80 years. But watching BoB and the interviews with those guys, it’s hard not to feel shame at how much the culture of individualism has taken over, and how much it seems that people of today (myself included) would be incredibly unlikely to be able to rise to any kind of similar challenge.
  18. Not if the measure is YoY for a given month. The 7.5% is an annual number, so we won’t know the real compounding impact of that number until next year.

  20. Removing liquidity is not the answer to addressing inflation caused by supply chain issues. I believe that is why the Fed is hesitant to raise rates quickly/dramatically. I still think that inflation will taper extremely quickly later this year, although I do think we’ll see sustained moderately high inflation in services sectors.
  21. Unfortunately I think unless you’re willing to move somewhere with universal healthcare you have to wait to FIRE until you can afford the premiums. That’s another thing likely to keep me in the workforce for another half-decade.
  22. CVS stock way down today as they announce they expect a huge reduction in sales of tests and vaccines. Hoping these are the kinds of signals we can actually trust send an end to the pandemic.
  23. I watched episode I with my 6 year old last weekend. It has aged well for me. I used to just get mad watching it because it was so bad, but this time I actually enjoyed it. Jake Lloyd and Jar Jar are still bloody awful, midichlorians was bad idea jeans, and basing the plot around political disputes was stupid. But the pod race was good and the final duel with Maul might be the best scene in any of the non-OT movies. If they’d just made Anakin 12 instead of 7 (or whatever) that movie would have been orders of magnitude better.
