  1. Yeah, I’ve got to hand it to Pierce. He recognized the hot hand and decided to ride it till the end. So many coaches or managers seem to have a hard stop at 100 pitches. Or even at approaching 100 pitches. I understand trying to protect your asset, but this late in the season, these guys are plenty capable of going until they aren’t effective anymore. And, by God, was LBJ effective. It would have been criminal to have taken him out of the game while he was still mowing them down. I was worried that Pierce would pull LBJ after 7, then after 8, because of the pitch count. As I’m sure many others were. Good coaching decision by David Pierce to let his pitcher that was in control keep pitching.
  2. Okay, I’ve been an avid baseball fan for over 50 years and never knew of that ordinary effort nuance regarding a throw. One is never too old to learn. Just seems silly to me that Maton got charged for that earned run on Bregman’s throwing error, said throw having handily beaten the runner.
  3. I don’t know how they gave Drury a hit on that play. He was nowhere near to beating it out. Should have been an error on either Bregman or Abreu. Both runs should be unearned.
  4. Only 2 hits tonight, including a double into the left field corner. Currently batting .294. That’s all.
  5. I’m truly sorry y’all are having to deal with this. Best wishes for your Dad, your Mom, and all of your family. Regarding your Mom, I totally understand her mindset. Delusion and/or denial was the coping mechanism that allowed me to somewhat keep my sanity while I was caring for my wife as she was fighting a losing battle with cancer. After all, she was being treated by the best in the world - MD Anderson. They can fix everybody, right? That’s the mindset I had, and I suspect your Mom has. To think otherwise, well, you just don’t allow your mind to go there. It’s too terrible to contemplate while there is still a chance that things can get better. I’m pulling for y’all that things can get better.
  6. That’s well done. I found this paragraph to be particularly poignant: “One doesn’t teeter and totter without gaining some sense of where the fulcrum rests. To know that place and still transfer weight to one side, for any or all of the reasons, is its own burden. One I hope has been lifted.”
  7. I bought this ZGrills smoker about a year ago. Very solid. The PID controller keeps the temps rock steady. That was my main criteria when I was shopping for a pellet grill. Read hundreds of individual reviews on different brands, this ZGrill was consistently rated high, with the controller being a big part of that. Fit and finish is good, as is customer service. I was looking at the comparably sized RecTeq, but it was almost $500 more at the time. Ive been very satisfied.
  8. Yeah. A bunch of Surlyites posting walls of unrealistic speculation, each one trying to convince the others of the righteousness of their own particular brand of speculation. Same as it ever was.
  9. Oh, they asked. Good God, that answer tho
  10. I’m sure it’s probably already been said, but this ump is the absolute worst that I can remember seeing. Will be interesting to see his report card tomorrow. He cost the Astros at least 1 run with the 3-0 strike call on Yordan that was 3-4 inches low right before Tucker’s double in the corner. If the box is right, this ump is consistently wrong.
  11. Looks to me like everyone has learned to pitch him in under the hands so that he can’t get his arms extended. Granted, I never really watched him before this year, so don’t know what he used to do with inside pitches. Dude needs to figure it out soon, or he’s just going to be a black hole in the middle of the lineup.
  12. Just give me someone that can throw a goddamn strike.
  13. I just made some Buckboard Bacon out of an 11 pound, .88 per pound pork butt that I picked up at H‑E‑B. Filleted out the bone, then sliced it horizontally to create 2 pieces about 2 to 2.5 inches thick. Dry brined for 2 weeks with Morton’s Tender Quick and brown sugar. Then rinsed, dried, covered with coarse black pepper, and placed uncovered on a rack in the refrigerator for a day to develop the pellicle. Smoked for 3 hours on my ZGrill pellet grill smoke setting (160*) for 3 hours, bumped it to 180 for an hour, finished it at 225* to an internal temp of 145*. Let cool on a rack, then into the refrigerator for a couple of days before slicing and packaging. I did cut a few slices after smoking for a sample and fried them up crispy. It’s not fatty like bacon, much meatier. I like it a lot.
  14. I think that the point is - you bitch and moan, ad nauseam, about the same shit every year. Incompetent GMs, you have better ideas. Yet we end up in the LCS and/or World Series every year. Maybe let’s give these guys the benefit of the doubt on April 16, for Christ’s sake.
  15. Suck it, punk https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/05/sports/baseball/houston-astros-world-series.html
  16. Yep, I’m sure you’ve got it all figured out. Let’s just hope the Russkies don’t read Surly. Otherwise, the offensive is dead on arrival. Edited to say, I was being a dick, you might be right. But I hope the people in charge use some imagination to create an offensive that can’t be stopped. Wherever that may take them.
  17. Absolutely 1980 Astros was my greatest disappointment. First time in the playoffs, they’d always been crummy since inception, and you have prime Nolan Ryan pitching in the 8th with a 5-2 lead, win and you go to the World Series. My young mind was blown with the possibility of the World Series right in front of us. And then it all fell apart. Complete and utter devastation for young Victor. Nothing comes close for me.

  19. You need Polynesian ties to do that, don’t you know?
