  1. Malcolm was more of a guest star. Gomer was in early seasons, but got spun off into a series, and replaced by Goober. Jack Dodson was actually pretty good in an early episode as a different character. He played an insurance salesman that got disappointed when he found out Andy was making a claim instead of buying a new policy. They started with strong supporting characters, but every character they replaced was replaced with a weaker character, sometimes terribad. Warren trying to replace Barney was the most obvious. Still can't believe Andy had the hots for Helen Crump over Ellie. Personally, though, I would have gone for Floyd's manicurist (Barbara Eden.)
  2. First five years. Every original character was classic. After that, it was something else.
  3. And my dad said, "Son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln."
  4. Good stuff. I'm pretty sure a psychiatrist wouldn't have helped me. A lot of it is just the dynamic of the meeting, where the shrink takes on the role of "messiah" where whether he tries to or not, he presents as the all knowing person who's there to solve my problems. It's easier to open up and be honest at an AA meeting. Psychiatrist meeting: "Yeah, I got drunk and pissed on a police car." Psychiatrist: "You what?" AA meeting: "Yeah, I got drunk and pissed on a police car." Someone else: "Been there. Were you inside or outside the car when you did it?"
  5. Best explanation I ever heard was from a guy at the Bouldin group, hell, had to be 35 years ago. He said early in his drinking career, he had that one drunk where everything seemed perfect. He felt great. He felt alive. And he spent the rest of his drinking career trying to recapture that feeling. I don't really buy the childhood trauma thing. I drank because I liked getting drunk. I liked the feeling of euphoria. Never understood how someone could leave half a beer. It was never a problem for me to go a week or a month without a drink. When I started drinking, though, I didn't stop until I was stinking drunk. For a while I tried to convince myself I could have a few and stop when I got the right level of buzz, but nah. It's not a problem for me not to drink, so I'm more fortunate than many. If I ever say, "oh, I'll have one glass of wine," though, yeah, empty bottle and I wake up a half hour late for work.
  6. Caine Mutiny was great, except for the Willie Keith romance part. Problem was that Robert Francis and May Winn weren't talented enough to be on the screen with Bogart, Van Johnson, E. G. Marshall, and Fred MacMurray. Bogart playing a Captain descending into madness, and MacMurray playing a weasel who could come off as reasonable while spreading poison were great. Trivia note: Van Johnson got the scar on his forehead in a car accident. He covered it with makeup for most movies, but thought Steve Maryk should have a scar. if you haven't read the book...
  7. The Harry Potter series is loved by all ages, ten through pedophile. She was at her most popular when she had the teen jailbait thing going on. There are also a lot of kids who grew up watching her, and she was their first cinema crush. I can understand the kids growing up who thought she was super hot. The older guys, not so much. When I was about ten I had mad love for Sandra Dee. I would have gotten her, too, if it wasn't for that bastard, Moondoggie.
  8. Tommy's selling used cars, Nancy's fixing hair
  9. Dittos to what Scraps said about already being posted, but haven't seen these: Deep down in Louisiana, close to New Orleans, way back up in the woods among the evergreens Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin for a train, feelin near as faded as my jeans Amarillo by morning, up from San Antone, everything that I've got is just what I've got on All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey I knew a man, Bojangles and he'd dance for you Just a small town girl, living in a lonely world
  10. I don't recall that. I recall LA not giving a frog's fat ass about having the NFL come back. The NFL was batshit crazy to get a team back in LA, cause (1) they didn't want major cities to figure out they didn't need a team to be considered a major city, and (2) there are a lot of televisions in LA. The reason the Houston Texans exist is because when the NFL put out a call for proposals back in the late 90s, they thought it would be a slam dunk for LA, but they couldn't find anyone in LA that cared enough to put together a decent bid.
  11. I was never an NFL fan. I was a Cowboys fan. Jerry cured me of that, and Roger Goodell finished it off.
  12. Does anyone think Alabama would get a bowl ban for this kind of infraction?
  13. I read a some of it, and just kept getting this vibe that the guy who wrote it was a self-absorbed asshole that was in love with the smell of his own farts, but that he was also deeply insecure that he might have an opinion that won't fit with what the groupthink will be next week. Then I noticed the site was for New York magazine. Explained everything. As with most lists, this one said more about the author than the movies.
  14. If you're talking about Mizzery not releasing her transcripts, it's standard practice that transcripts are held if a student has an unpaid balance. UT threatened to hold my transcripts over a library fine. Looking through this, first of all, everyone should have some pity. Poor girl was starving to death. I have suspicions based on what's been posted in this thread of what went down.
  15. Hey, if you ride your motorcycle to the Twin Peaks in Waco, you get free shots.
  16. In his book, Time Enough to Win, Roger Staubach disclosed that he took a baseline neurological test prior to his career and repeated it after every season. The first time the test came back with an indication of a decline, he retired. He said the decline was a tiny decline in his twitch reaction. He did this on his own, and not with the team. He's approaching 77 now and still appears mentally sound. Doing baseline and annual neurological testing on athletes would lead to shorter careers and longer lives. It's not a cure all, as some damage won't show up until years later, but athletes will hide symptoms. When a decline shows up, retirement should be mandatory.
  17. Lotta things hidden under Town Lake.
  18. I will say one thing for your argument. Guys like Montana, Staubach, Bradshaw, and Meredith played in an era where you could absolutely murder a quarterback. None of them could play as long as Brady because they were used up. I think Bradshaw, when he was a rookie, got four teeth knocked out during a game and didn't come out. It's also the reason receivers can act like jerks today, taunting dbacks. During the Ronnie Lott, Jack Tatum era, they pull that shit and the next series they're leaving the field on a stretcher. Edit: football is still plenty tough. Players continue to take hits that would kill the average person. You just don't see things like runners having to jump over the bench to keep from getting hit out of bounds anymore.
  19. That's why they tore it down.
  20. Sounds like he's having a helluva time physically: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2016/02/04/joe-montana-pain-physical-ailment/79852754/
  21. Didn't see Ghostbusters 2020, but have seen Hemsworth in all the Thor movies. He's a good comedic actor. The writers in the Marvel series morphed the character some to accommodate those skills. I think it may be tougher for a stand up comic to act than for an actor with good timing to do a comedy role. I know Dangerfield had a tough time in Caddyshack, cause he had trouble adapting to not getting laughs. I think they made so many of his scenes in front of a crowd so he could get a reaction during the take.
  22. You're just ovary acting.
