  1. At the end of Ep 1 just after Joel, Tess, and Ellie left to start heading West the radio came on and played the Depeche Mode song. According to the code, that meant trouble. That was the night Bill and Frank had their last meal together. Bill let Joel and Tess know something was up, but they never heard the warning.
  2. Checking in Weird this story died in Alaska after the first day or two. Makes me think the rumors I've heard are true. Someone didn't follow trash protocol and the smell lured the bear in. Wrong place, wrong time for the mom and kid. Such is life up here, especially in polar bear country.
  3. Those throwback unis they were wearing against ULL in that highlight reel are the best I wish those were our current uniforms
  4. I never thought it would happen in my lifetime, but I think you are correct. Don't fear, but be ready...Valhalla calls.
  5. Rules of Engagement Jeff Bingham is one of my all time favorite TV characters
  6. Question about optics… Will the optics frost over if taken from inside a warm cabin to a very cold outside? I mean we’re talking what could possibly be a 100 to 130 degree or more temperature change. Are they made for something like that?
  7. Moose’s xmas present to himself this year is to upgrade his standard AR-15 (5.56). I’m not a gun geek and when I tried to go down the rabbit hole that is AR upgrades the sheer volume of choices hurt my head. So I figured I’d just ask Surly what they would add to my Windham Weaponry MPC?
  8. Yep, the struggle is real But it’s the Winter Solstice today. We start gaining light tomorrow Cross post from the non-Texas thread:
  9. Hasn’t been above -40 for 4 days Wife told me it got to -54 while I was at work yesterday Who wants to come visit?
  10. 45 below right now. Supposed to be like this for the next 2 weeks or so if you believe the forecasters. On a positive note, the Northern Light should be spectacular. Layer up y'all.
  11. The SOS stuff available on the new smart phones is pretty iffy up in these latitudes. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. If the company I work for didn't supply me a phone I'd still have a flip phone like my wife does. She refuses to upgrade to a smart phone. She does have an iPad though, but that's mainly for cabin entertainment.
  12. Cheers Wood heat is just different. Warms you to the bone.
  13. On mushrooms standing around a campfire was my favorite experience Never had that many neurons firing at one time in my lifE
  14. Long term exposure to those temps without the proper gear is a definite hypothermia risk I always say this but no one ever believes me, the deep cold is not as bad as you think it is Your first exposure to those type of temps sucks. Like examining your life type sucks, but you acclimate quickly I’m a North man now. The blood has thickened, so to speak. Anything above 70 is miserably hot to me. I’m sure I’ll acclimate back when we get too old to do this anymore and move south I was in flannel pajama bottoms and regular house slippers and shirtless when I took that pic of the lights. Went outside to take my old man piss at 2 am. The lights always come out late on cold nights, so I grabbed my phone in case they were out. I was rewarded. I was out at 30 below for about 5 minutes total dressed minimally. It’s cold, but bearable. Not dangerous. It’s feels nice to go back inside and warm the bones by the wood stove then crawling back in bed. Simple pleasures
  15. I haven’t seen that movie I’ve been told I should
  16. A few more pics of the light display from the other night. A buddy sent me these. He lives in Healy.
  17. The Northern lights were kicking last night
  18. Good news on that front, I’ve heard his place is up for sale. The guy that is looking to buy it and I are on friendly term, so if the sale happens the overall stress level in the neighborhood will go down.
  19. Still here. Been busy as fuck. This year’s fire and the plow truck shenanigans put me way behind on getting ready for winter. Winter officially showed up last night, 36 below when I got up this morning.
  20. The shit stick is very effective when knocking down the poopcicle. Give it a good whack and it usually breaks off at or near the bottom. You always let it freeze before you give it a go. As far as I know the shit stick has not been utilized this year as of yet. That’s the wife’s job.
  21. It's been as mild a beginning to winter up here as I can remember, which is much appreciated after last year's brutal one. We've had about 6 inches of snow so far, and it's only been below zero a couple of times. The forecasts have us above zero thru the next 10 days with very little chance of snow. We'll enjoy it while we can.
  22. OK, I'll play...this question tickles my inner Viking. I couldn't kill or torture anyone who hasn't wronged me or one of my loved ones, but I would have no trouble killing an enemy in a war zone situation in whatever way I had to. But that's not what I think you are asking. I recently had some thieves fuck up my plow truck. I had visions of hanging them by their ankles and playing pinata with a baseball bat, making it last as long as I could before I finally killed them with a head shot. Also, if anyone ever harmed or killed my wife I would gladly skin them alive in front of their children. There's a reason I live in the woods.
  23. Instant attitude adjustment But my favorite part is the guy sitting at the bar just taking it all in
