  1. So.....you're still black, right? Then...you know why.
  2. i.e., soft intelligence and context. AI is not good at it, across the board. AI reads hard data. It is not good at soft data (context and subtle cues). I had a long conversation with a friend of ours a year or so ago -- he's an AI pioneer type, and as we got to drinking, I asked the time-honored "when does AI become self-aware and go all batshit crazy human?" He chuckled and gave a speech he's clearly given many times before: it doesn't. It's just not able to do the soft thinking that the human brain can do. I see lines of cars parked on the side of Far West at 3:30, and I know - from experience and context - that children will be in the area. And I know that children do stupid things, like dart out into traffic. So, I slow down, allowing me to adequately respond to any unanticipated hazard. The Tesla and I both won't see the kid who darts out from between the cars in that case, but I'm going 20, the Tesla is going 30, I have a better chance of stopping and of doing less damage if I do hit the kid. Tesla didn't do anything "wrong," it just doesn't have the soft IQ to do the right thing.
  3. "Hey doc, I have a problem. I can't bone on a boat unless Kenny Chesney is playing." Yeah, you'd get some therapy for that. Everyone knows that Al Jarreau is the best boat sex artist.
  4. A natural and expected consequence of the failure is not a "dramatic flair." No more than plummeting into a river is a "dramatic flair" when FSD misses the clear "bridge out ahead" sign. The sign and signal is LITERALLY a warning of "there may be kids crossing/darting out unsafely, you should slow down/stop." FSD failed to slow down/stop. Just as it would be with ANY driver who failed to do so, the consequence of hitting a darting kid - the very hazard warned about - is a real thing that happens. Nothing was manipulated. It was 100% a realistic scenario: a schoolbus with warning devices deployed while kids are boarding/exiting, and a kid darts out in the street to do so. The full scenario occurred. FSD missed the warnings, and as a result, hit the kid. Hitting the kid isn't a "dramatic flair." IT'S WHAT FUCKING HAPPENS WHEN YOU DISREGARD THE WARNING SIGNALS.
  5. Jesus fucking Christ. The dummy shows one of the NATURAL consequences of the failure. YES....you cannot SEE the child that darts out in front of you. THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE AND FOLLOW THE SIGNALS AND WARNINGS. THOSE WARNINGS ARE LITERALLY THERE TO SAY "SLOW DOWN/STOP, A KID MIGHT BE DARTING OUT FROM HERE." Jesus tapdancing Christ. The kid is the WHY and the CONSEQUENCE of the shit that Tesla missed. Which Tesla missed both because...it fucking missed a clear signal, AND because it's not smart enough to read context.
  6. This. This is the "soft intelligence" that humans bring to the table. We recognize a situation as presenting a particular kind of hazard, so we slow down to account for it. A computer just reads the hard data. You mean, minus the object that flags any educated driver that there is a risk of a kid running out....yeah.
  7. Which are the literal red flags that we use to warn that a child MIGHT be darting out from in front of a bus, etc. Tesla AI is heavy on the A, light on the I.
  8. This. And that is the challenge of AI-driven vehicles, even the best of them: for as good as their reaction time and such is with respect to immediate hazards (and it is quite good at that, faster than a human), it does not do "human anticipation" well. A good human driver can spot a kid on the side of the road and tell if the kid is contemplating running into the road, or we can see the driver next to us glancing left, and realize he may make a quick illegal lane change and maybe sideswipe us, etc. The best AI-driven car has a hard time with that. A shitty AI-driven car like Tesla has an even harder time with it.
  9. Not if you keep playing Kenny fucking Chesney.
  10. The fact that we've discussed yacht rock, and even shared playlists with some of his music on it, and NOT focused on the greatness that is Gerry Rafferty and over-the-top 70's sax riffs....well, I have lost all respect for y'all. I didn't have much before, but what I had, I've lost. Baker Street? Right Down the Line? Man, light a fire, pour a glass of whiskey, and let the mellow perfection roll over ya. What does this have to do with rain? Well, hell....yacht rock is nice to have rocking along on a nice rainy day.
  11. This is very, very true. All the "no more endless war!" and "why should we spend money supporting another military?" types will suddenly do a 180. Because dominionism, end-times prophecies, and other stupidity.
  12. That’s how fascists roll, dude. A sizable plurality of your countrymen are evil fascists. Get used to it.
  13. Resident libertarian continues his perfect streak of not criticizing a single authoritarian thing done by the Regime. You know, just what you would expect from a libertarian.
  14. Yep. I’ll probably have a short trip overseas later this year. My plan is the same that it always is: if they want to search my phone, nope. It has access to privileged client info, I can’t and won’t grant access (PW only, no biometric access). They will detain me and confiscate my phone. 1) fuck it, I’ve been delayed in airports plenty. 2) I can buy another phone. 3) the govt hassling me, a successful American with zero criminal record, would be a good story. I wish a motherfucker would.
  15. If that’s true…that’s fucking problematic. The president is the head of the Iranian government. That’s a national decapitation strike. You kill a country’s government leader, it ain’t just a one-off strike kinda thing. Iran has no choice but to strike back hard. They may not be able to do so right away…but there are no restraints left. This isn’t good.
  16. To be honest...I actually got the 6 steak finger basket the other day, on a whim and an indulgence. At my age, I should stick with the 4 finger basket, and even then, it stopped tasting good after the 3rd steak finger. That's probably for the best, cardiologically speaking.
  17. It's like you don't even know the DQ steak finger basket even exists.... Strips of fried goodness have a place on the table of every man.

    Pizza

Hit up East Side Pies on Burnet the other night with my wife -- worked late, wanted pizza. Solid thin crust NY style option, I'm a fan.
  19. But…did you look up the fact that Zeus is a gullible idiot? CHECKMATE.
  20. Gennaro's is the real-deal. We stay at a cabin out there from time to time, and that's a nice dinner spot.
  21. Wife and I will be going for the first part of the protest at least. Fundamentally, we can't stand by and not make our voices heard. Yes, we're doing plenty of other things and have been, but it's important that the nation sees people "just like them" out there saying that this is not normal, and it is not acceptable. WE are the real patriots.
  22. So….what kind of phone do you have?
  23. Smelled like an Allsup’s? SOLD!
  24. I’m just super glad that we went in the “no more hawkish neocons” direction. Of course, being that we chose the “insane criminal autocrats creating repeated/endless war to cement their grip on power” direction as the alternative…maybe not a real good move there.
  25. I feel ya bro.
