  1. I'm obviously not a photographer, but here is a picture of the first ever US record of bat falcon from this January. I didn't find it, but made the 6-hour drive to the valley to see it, along with 2 other birds rarely seen in the States. Got to enjoy it for all of about 60 seconds before someone drove past and honked, scaring it off for the rest of the day. Good thing I left the house at 2:00 AM instead of 2:02. Such a reasonable, rational hobby...
  2. Barn owl x2 White-tailed hawk Red-shouldered hawk Wilson's warbler Cedar waxwing Scissor-tailed flycatcher Dickcissel Red-shouldered hawk Red-headed woodpecker Black-bellied whistling duck Barred owl Great horned owl Leucistic red-tailed hawk?? (Incredible!)
  3. If you're truly getting interested in birds, you should take a trip down to Anahuac NWR. Lots of large birds that are easy to see and ID in huge numbers during the winter. Thousands of snow geese, tons of ducks, and raptors (peregrines, bald eagles, kites, harriers, etc.)
  4. Red-tailed would have a mostly white chest with slight streaking across the belly and red-shouldered would not have the dark cap.
  5. Thats probably a coopers hawk, could be a sharp-shinned. Not a red-tailed or red-shouldered. Note the reddish barring on the chest/belly and dark cap. They are little bird hunters and like to stalk feeders.
  6. Since we're already off topic, I think some people might be confused about who is generally keeping them alive during their gastric bypass.
  7. I cannot remember a time I laughed harder in my adult life than when I tried to explain this (the actual press conference) to my wife.
  8. Fucking political prognosticating Nate's, man. I listened to the other one (Silver) for one election cycle and learned my lesson.
  9. I'm considering a similar trip maybe right after labor day next year. Would have a 15 month-old in tow. I've been looking at Naxos. Seems relatively low-key compared to some islands, but plenty of restaurants, good beaches and the highest peak in the Cyclades to hike up. Anyone have any experience there? I'm already having to convince the wife that we do not want to spend a week on the clusterfuck that is Santorini.
  10. Or January 6. Not to mention climate. We can't remember what happened 6 months ago. Thinking ahead is so far above our heads, just like the ocean will be.
  11. 'Tis the season to further strain family relationships right before the holidays!
  12. Ibuprofen, bro. You're going to need your liver the next month.
  13. I've learned to try to avoid car naps as much as possible, no matter what. He sleeps for 5 minutes in the car and then does not want to go down at all for a regular nap.
  14. I doubt my wife would leave the kid behind completely at this stage. The grandparents are happy to do it and won't be on baby duty constantly, but will give us the opportunity to get out on our own at least once or twice.
  15. We're kind of in between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. We will probably spend most of the time within the resort itself to test the travel waters slowly.
  16. We have a 5 month-old and would like to get some traveling in before trying for a 2nd, and final child. What advice can you give me for traveling with a 6-18 month old, other than don't do it? We're already heading to an all-inclusive near Tulum in January, with grandparents as back-up, but would love to do a big international trip later next year, if possible.

Over 1 mil ahead now with 90% in
  19. Anyone else watching Brazilian election results come in? Seems like something the news should maybe cover more.
  20. Just here to pile on. Sid Miller? Jesus fucking christ, dude.
  21. Cross-posting from the fascism thread, the Amazon is on the ballot in Brazil tomorrow. South American Trump (Bolsonaro) looking to win or steal the election, then continue bulldozing/burning the rainforest. Cool...
  22. I was about to post this in the climate thread. The existence of the Amazon is essentially on the ballot.
  23. Regardless of the result, I'll be spending 11/8 drinking like I'm watching a Texas 2nd half collapse. I should probably start hydrating now so at least my hangover is manageable if democracy's 2-year extension doesn't go through.
  24. It really would be fascinating to watch if this wasn't our only home. A decade ago, I would've guessed the severe effects wouldn't occur until near the end of my life, or after. How this is all just an afterthought to most people, and not at the front of their minds on a daily basis, really blows my mind.
