For those not from southeast TX, the rundown is that in 1925 Port Neches-Groves ISD (or whatever it was called then) decided that their mascot would be the Indians. Every school in the district, not just the high school, has as its mascot some kind of variation on the theme. The high school is called The Reservation, etc. In 1979, the district got a certificate from the Cherokee Nation calling them "ambassadors of goodwill". Every time the question comes up of whether or not they should change their mascot, they bring up this certificate. Well, last week, the Cherokee Nation formally rescinded that certificate and asked them to change their mascot. As you can imagine, people are losing their shit. This is the superintendent's response: Of course, now all I'm hearing is "we don't need their permission anyway" and "the chief now is a leftist Democrat and I don't think he represents everyone in the Cherokee nation". This is a Beaumont Enterprise article about the superintendent's response. He and everyone else there are doubling down. For the record, I don't think they will change the mascot - there would be actual riots if that happened. But this is as close to change as I've ever seen.

Purge alert...again. A purge of princes and aides continued across Saudi Arabia on Saturday after the kingdom’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, claimed to have foiled a coup being plotted by two of the country’s most senior royals – widely seen as among the few left standing in the way of his ascension. Prince Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz, the only full brother of the monarch, King Salman, and Mohammed bin Nayef, who was heir to the throne until being ousted by Prince Mohammed, face treason charges after being accused of organising against the ambitious heir. Their arrest on Friday shocked the country and sparked a new round of speculation about the 84 year old king’s hold on the throne. Exiled dissidents suggested Prince Mohammed’s announcement masked an imminent push to take power from his father. The claims were given impetus by royal court insiders, one of whom suggested through a source that the moves against the two princes were made as a preventative measure, following a sudden deterioration in the King’s health. However, those claims were firmly denied by officials inside Saudi Arabia. King Salman, is believed to have signed the warrants that justified his brother’s arrest and that of the man slated to replace him until Prince Mohammed was drafted in, following a palace coup in 2017, and named crown prince. Since then Prince Mohammed, now 34, has assiduously eliminated threats against him, most famously by later that year locking up much of the country’s business elite in the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh, including senior royals, who were forced to sign over assets. Some were also stripped of their positions. A year later, in the aftermath of the murder by Saudi agents of Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, Prince Ahmed was lured back to Saudi Arabia after many years living in exile in London. Known as a critic of the crown prince, his return was hailed as a sign that the hard-charging heir was prepared to tolerate dissent – a claim widely rejected by critics at home and abroad. Prince Ahmed’s status as a brother of the king, and Mohammed bin Nayef’s former role as heir, had been thought to afford them both protection. Since being ousted, Mohammed bin Nayef had been prevented from leaving the kingdom and had spent much of his time at a country property outside Riyadh. His movements and those of his former aides have been closely monitored amid an expanding crackdown on dissent across all aspects of Saudi society. Throughout Prince Mohammed’s rise, King Salman had remained largely quiet, deferring to his son on extravagant state building projects and a cultural re-engineering that disavowed the hardline gender segregation and piety that had defined the modern Saudi state. He is known to have been at odds with Prince Mohammed over the Khashoggi murder, which the CIA believes was ordered by the crown prince, and on several appointments, but has made few decisive interventions amid the political purges. The Saudi leader hosted the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, in the Saudi capital on Thursday and chaired a meeting of the council of ministers two days earlier, appearing composed in both meetings. His health has been the subject of repeated rumours, but recent visitors suggest he remains engaged with most subjects. Security forces set up roadblocks across the Saudi capital on Saturday, sparking fears of unrest in the wake of the arrests and unsubstantiated suggestions that Prince Mohammed may soon assume the throne. The king is known to be aiming to receive dignitaries for the G20 summit in Riyadh in November, a landmark event on the Saudi calendar. “It’s difficult to be 100% about what is going on,” said a former aide to a Saudi minister. “The bubble has been so well prepared. The king is so cloistered that no one knows for sure.” A former senior diplomat, well versed in Saudi palace intrigue, said the latest purge appeared to be part of a systematic approach to eliminating dissent as Prince Mohammed’s ascension drew near. Using an Arabic term, “Bani”, to suggest “tribe”, he said: “So he’s gone for the Bani Abdullah, Bani Fahd and Bani Sultan. Now it’s the Bani Nayef. There’s still a son of Saud bin Nayef [Mohammed bin Nayef’s brother] at the General Intelligence Presidency. He’ll have to go, too. This is like Baghdad in the 1960s.” In the late 60s Saddam Hussein launched a coup that purged Iraq’s monarchy and consolidated himself as leader for more than three decades.

Or something like that? I enjoy history as a kid, but it seems now that time was so limited that it seems we barely skimmed the surface. Now that I'm older my interest has really peaked on many historical details. If not, can we haz one?

There are some threads rust need to be enshrined, and serve as a shining example for generations to come. The Taliban thread on the Daily Texan board belongs in classics as well as the thread where @nowthis puts himself (nntawwt).

As good a book as I have read in a long, long time. I hope they stay true to the book. The ending shook/surprised me a bit and I had to go back and re read to sort of digest/process it. I still hope they stay true to it.

WISE COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) — A two-day search in rural Wise County amid cold temperatures led to the discovery of Athena Strand's body. The 7-year-old was first reported missing from her father's home on Nov. 30. At about 8:00 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2022, Sheriff Lane Akin said her body was found about 9 miles away from her home, southeast of Boyd. Police said that the contract driver of a FedEx truck abducted Athena and that she likely died within an hour based on digital evidence and on a confession. The driver was named as Tanner Lynn Horner, 31. He is being held at the Wise County Jail on charges of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. His bond has been set at $1.5 million. Sheriff Akin said that at about the time Athena went missing, Horner dropped off a package at the home. She was probably abducted from her driveway, about 200 yards away from the house. According to the Sheriff, Horner gave detectives at least two false locations - including an area of CR 4599 that was taped off by police on Friday afternoon - before leading them to Athena's body. There was no information about a possible motive, but authorities said Horner did not know Athena or her family. Earlier this week, Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said they believe Athena likely ran away but did not rule out foul play. "It could be any number of things and we're looking at all those possibilities." The Wise County Sheriff's Office said they received a call from her stepmother reporting her missing after the two had an argument while her father was not home. Police said she spent "about an hour" looking for her before contacting the sheriff's office. An Amber Alert was issued for Athena on Thursday and several hundred volunteers came out to Wise County to aid in the search.

Just bought a ball and trying to throw a hook like a real bowler, after spending the first 44 years of my life throwing a straight house ball. Anyone making this transition before? I generally roll a 130-170 with the occasional 200 and the occasional 110 or some such. clients have a standing Wednesday bowling game that they have bugged me to do with them, and after they got serious they have shamed me into it. Wondering if any on here are serious, bowl in a league, know what they are doing, etc.

Metroplex actually: https://www.cbsnews.com/dfw/news/prostitution-ring-bust/ Out of an area as populated as the Metroplex I’m not sure how this is a big blow to sex trafficking. Apparently no sex traffickers, pimps or prostitutes were involved.

100% business above everything else. The guy is a real piece of work. He's known about the ill effects of his platform on Teen Girls, uses enragement for more engagement, has let accounts of the rich and famous get away with a lot more than regular accounts (take the Neymar incident from a few years ago). And now he's going on about the rules on Facebook and masculityity because clearly this is the model of masculinity if I ever saw one I could complain about the fact that when I browse FB I see more ads and posts from stupid accounts than any content from my friends and when I do see it, the content is like 2-3 days old. WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?! I think it's time we have a thread about this fucker and dump all over him and his shitty platform.

So, my forehead seems to be getting bigger. Right now, I'm about at Jason Isbell level. I started on Propecia from a mail-order joint a year or so ago. Popping a pill every morning is easy enough but I'm not sure it's working, and I'm strongly considering going with Rogaine. Rogaine sounds like a PITA. Any of y'all in a similar situation? I'm mid-50's, and I know that I have a lot more hair than some guys my age, but I'd like to hang on to it.

I mean, not gonna go, but man I would have a good time. Of all these groups, Bright Eyes is the one that I still listen to in some form or another (although... Jimmy Eat World is great and in the rotation, and actually Manchester Orchestra as well), but man looking at this has made me realize how much I'd love to see Dashboard. Needs Motion City Soundtrack. And honestly Avril Lavigne can fuck off, I don't know why she's on here.

Is it just me, or has Clemson been getting slightly worse each of the last few years? Is Dabo's magic starting to wear off?
