Arch Manning: Doing his best JAG impression to fool scouts

I still can't decide if that TD throw was a bad throw that got lucky to be caught or purposely put in that location to avoid the defender.

It was poor fundamentals. Flat footed, no anticipation. He aimed it there and probably made it harder than it needed to.

I have very little confidence he’ll overcome this during this year. He’s not learning with more reps, he’s regressing. And SEC play he’ll regress a lot if he’s not able to throw a football.

What kind of pillow does Arch have? There's your problem. The fucking pillow. And that's Sark's fault all the way. If Sark wasn't calling the plays, he could notice things like pillows.

In amongst this Wild Speculation Thread was this important post above. I never would have guessed that Arch is under more pressure than any other SEC QB.

Just  anecdotally, it seemed like he’s had plenty of time to throw quite a bit. We all know the OL is shaky, but this stat shows it’s way more shaky than I realized. Arch has missed guys badly with plenty of time to throw, but maybe the poor OL play is making him look worse than he is.

OR, we design a number of plays to get Arch out of a shaky pocket, on the move, or misdirection plays to expose an over pursuing defense.  Can I get one GD bootleg.  Can we get receivers in the flat.  Screens.  Something to get the ball out quickly, gain a few yards, and set up a few 3rd and shorts.

At this point if feels so clear he has the yips. I'd guess that his family would think the same.

I expect everyone around him to be proactive on this, whether it's having him talk to a sports psychologist or other athletes that have gone through something similar. The question will be how long it takes to get him right.

Wait until you find out that every game Texas has lost ever was because the refs screwed up or were getting paid or were told by the league office or the tv networks to make certain calls.

Also any team we don’t like that wins a game against any other opponent not named Texas only won because of the refs.

These are the facts.  And they are undisputed.

Our games are much better officiated without Big12 interference. It’s night and day and backed up by statistically significant numbers between 2013-2023. The last year and a half has been a revelation. It’s a myth that the anti-UT bias during this time is a myth.

I'm assuming that is another PFF number, so I'll take it with a grain of salt.

The OL ain't great, but it has been adequate in pass protection, and I rarely see Arch running for his life. If anything, he has created some self-pressure by bailing too early on reads.

You said myth twice.

sure but in the portal / nil age, UT having even an average OL is a red flag. staff / gm failure to identify need and talent

Has anyone suggested bringing in Cheech and Rene Russo to unfuck his brain?

Goddamn how old are you? Gotta update those references.

Try bringing in Seth Rogan and Sydney Sweeney to unfuck his brain.

FTR, I agree that Rene Russo was an absolute dime back in the day.

I think he has the "yips". Check out this story about former Wisconsin QB Joel Stave and his case of the yips. I could totally see this being the case.

Quote

"Maybe it begins the next morning, with the simplest drill at a summer practice. No helmets, no pads, no spectators in the crowd. Receivers lined up, running simple 10- to 12-yard outs. The bullet you're used to firing wobbles toward the target. A second pass, and the ball smacks the turf a few feet in front of a different receiver. You shake it off. Everyone has bad days."

Three google quickies:

Why don't quarterbacks bench press?

The reason the barbell bench press has been labelled a “dangerous” exercise for quarterbacks is because the barbell locks you into an 'internally rotated' position (pronated grip) and your hands cannot move freely (like they can with dumbells).Feb 22, 2012

Why does Tom Brady not lift weights?

Tom Brady doesn't run, block, or tackle so he doesn't need the strength of other players. His exercises are for flexibility. Since he only thinks and throws he has been able to avoid serious injury. Clearly, a person can be in good shape without weight lifting and not everyone needs it.Oct 27, 2021
What exercises should quarterbacks not do?

What Exercises Should Quarterbacks Avoid?
  • The Barbell Bench Press. While it's true than any athlete with restricted shoulder mobility or stability can get an injury while benching, quarterbacks are particularly at risk since they throw so often. ...
  • Biceps Curls. ...

If you are referencing a specific movie, you tend to name the actors/actresses from that actual movie.
Rene Russo & Cheech Marin were in the fucking movie, not Seth Rogan and Tits McGee.

Remember, these kids are really into their bodies, as well as their girlfriend's bodies. They want to look good, and at that age they can bulk up fast. The real problem with the wrong kind of lifting is not that it can screw up your agility for a few hours, which it definitely can, but in trying to do what you're used to doing effortlessly, say throw a deep pass... you do that with tightened, bulked up muscles, and you can tear and permanently injure tissue, especially tendons. Things just won't work like they should and there may be no going back.

I was a little surprised to read that Brady apparently never lifted weights, but it makes sense. Almost never injured.
