My day is coming soon LTxfan and Honolulu Horn.  I think 66 is  next Wednesday?  Dad is now 82 and I told him a couple years ago that I posted his picture on a Longhorn online fan board. He only responded with why?  I didn’t do much.

Hook’em!!!

Yeah he didn't do much, just won a National Championship, no big deal lol

I was thinking surfing while a couple cold ones were already in me, thus Longboard Horn changed to Honolulu Horn over night. Both fit you and are cool, but sorry for the name mistake.

All good. Though Honolulu Horn is probably a lot better than me at surfing since he lives closer to the ocean.

Dad was a “practice” or Scout team player his whole time on The 40.  He was standing close to DKR with about 3 minutes left in the game vs Navy.  DKR asked have played a snap, which Dad said only on KOs.  DKR said go out there son, which my Dad asked which position?  DKR said I don’t care, just send someone off the field!  Thus my Father “lettered” in his Senior season - final game.  ST plays don’t count towards statistics, unless the person runs/catches the ball.

He truly was “Rudy” before there was a Rudy!  David McWilliams can attest, as they were roommates for over a couple of years.

Didn’t like it and told me not to even read it.  Loved DKR - I’ll leave it at that.

He had 50+ stitches to his face alone and they had face masks back then.  Dad hated having to practice against Tommy Nobis, who was also an OL early in his time on The 40.

The Pitt game was hot as hell, or so it seemed at the time.  Went to the Rice game either last year or the year before at it 100+ at kickoff.

The bottom photo from the Syracuse game ended up 21-21.  They were a top 10 team the year before and were 2-0 coming into Austin.  They wound up 6-4-1; we were 5-5-1 in Mackovic's second year.  Things are so much better these days.

Back then practice was “practice” Allen Iverson quote, but they were in full pads Tuesday through Thursday.  Full contact and you better keep your head on a swivel if you were on the scout team.

That Syracuse game was way hotter than Pitt, though both were miserable. Pearl Jam played an iconic show at South Park Meadow the night of the Pitt game; great weekend!

Longboard Horn, with your vast amount of pictures, do you a decent one to share when #52 comes around.  I grew up knowing Mical Padgett (LB late 80-91/92)?  Dad told David McWilliams about Mical after his freshman year, starting on the varsity at H-J.  He was already the best athlete on our team his freshman year!  He was a year ahead of me in school.

Mical looked like Nolan Ryan pitching LL baseball when in Jr High, as he was already damn near 6’ tall.  Not terribly consistent with throws, but he was the first person that I ever heard the ball through the air on the way to the catcher.  I’d basically step in the bucket with eyes closed with my bat stuck out there hoping for a “bunt!”

I've mentioned a few (too many) times I'm related him.  He's a photo from a family reunion a few years ago:

Here comes the Wishbone!!! 🤘

Darrell Royal's use of the wishbone launched an offensive revolution that change college football.

1. 1968 Texas

Head coach: Darrell Royal

Record: 9-1-1

So many college football innovations have started far outside the mainstream, in places like Carlisle, Pennsylvania, or Mount Pleasant, Iowa. But one of the single most influential innovations of all time took place at one of college football's power schools.

In essence, it doesn't sound like much of a tweak. Tasked with modernizing a stale offense, new coordinator Emory Bellard -- who, strangely enough, had been hired as the linebackers coach a year earlier -- basically went back in time to install the Split-T option offense as a way of getting more from a loaded backfield. Only, he had the fullback line up closer to the quarterback as a faster way of either hitting the hole on the dive portion of the option or fulfilling his blocking assignments. But somehow that little tweak, which made the formation look like a wishbone(or, as writer Mickey Herskowitz called it at the time, "a pulley-bone on a chicken"), led to a revolution.

Having won just 20 games in the three previous seasons, Texas began 1968 with a tie against Houston and a loss to Texas Tech. But backup quarterback James Street looked good in a comeback attempt against Tech; he was named the starter the next week, and Texas wouldn't lose again until 1971. They rolled through the rest of their 1968 slate, then went a perfect 11-0 in 1969, winning an all-time classic against Arkansas, then confirming a national title with a Cotton Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Because of Texas' blueblood profile, the Wishbone didn't have to work its way up from the lower levels of the sport. The other powers immediately understood that it could work for them. Alabama's Bear Bryant quickly adopted it following the Longhorns' 1969 success. So, too, did rival Oklahoma. And while the Horns would certainly reap the benefits of this offensive explosion -- they enjoyed four top-five finishes from 1968 to 1972, then another top-10 finish before Royal's retirement in 1976 -- Bama and OU would dominate the decade, with five national titles and 16 combined top-five finishes from 1971 to 1980. Never has an innovation caught on so quickly, and for the success it brought both Texas and others, the team that perfected the 'Bone should be considered the most influential team the sport has seen.

I also wanted to add this picture.  Dad is holding a ticket stub of the Navy vs Texas Cotton Bowl (1/1/1964).  The ticket was given to me, to give to him, by our very own Army Brat.  This picture was Father’s Day weekend this year.  Thanks Army Brat!
