My parents had two of those monstrosities.  A main one in the den and Dad had a monaural tube Magnavox that had a giant klipschorn type speaker.  That latter one really sounded good.

My parents had one as well.  Nine-and-a-half feet long and probably 400 lbs empty.  Reloaded with McIntosh gear and a Dual 1245 in 1976.  I couldn't help but rescue it from the estate sale when my mom moved out of her house.  I restored/serviced everything including the McIntosh speakers.  It sounds pretty incredible now.

Never had an 8-track deck.  Middle section used to house a small Sony TV, but it's record storage now.

I never had one of these.

We definitely had one of those 8-track players with the plunger on it.  Really satisfying.

Can't be 100% sure on first download, but probably Horse With No Name by Neil Young, Walkin in Memphis by Bruce Springsteen, or Mrs. Robinson by The Beatles.

You sure it wasn't Superfreak by Sixpence None the Richer?

I'm fairly certain my first CD's were via Columbia House.

They called.  You still owe them money.

I was a late adaptor to CD

Speaking of late adaptors, I'm sure I'm not the only Surly poster who had one of these in the car for the old Discman.

My dad had a homemade "portable" 8 track player that was an AM/FM 8 track dash mount player in a plywood box with a pair of Radio Shack speakers and a transformer to convert it from DC to AC.  It weighed about 10 pounds.  He'd run an extension cord out to the pit and we'd listen to Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Charlie Pride, and Big Band music on it while smoking chicken or brisket.  I have digital copies of some of these albums, and to this day, 50 years or more later, I still expect that 8 track cachunk where it changed tracks in the middle of some of the songs.  It kinda seems weird without it.

I wish I knew what happened to that beast.  I'd love to have it for old times' sake.

8-track - Rush - Hemispheres - bought at Gibsons in NW Austin.  A Dollar General and Goodwill occupy that space now. 2nd was Pink Floyd The Wall
Cassette - REO Speedwagon - High Infidelity
CD - Rush - Moving Pictures

I cannot recall my first LP or first download.  Firsts being 2/3 Rush is coincidental.  Buddy across the street from me had 2112 and Farewell.  I bought Hemispheres blind to be cool.  Was not disappointed.  I figured Moving Pictures would be a great album to hear on CD.  It was.

When mp3 became popular, I ripped much of my decent sized CD collection for use on the cheapo 128M mp3 player I had.  I did not download much on the original Itunes, as it was not portable.  The early Amazon downloads were - and could be purchased for less.  Looking at my Amazon history, I see LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver as my first download there.

My first record was some eagles album I got for cheap

My first cassette was Guns n Roses Use your Illusion 2

My first CD was Seal's self titled album, Seal

My first MP3 was Weird Al's "The saga begins" which blew my fucking mind because it had come out just a few days before. That was the same day I discovered Winamp, and Napster, I got the mp3 at a lan party where the person providing it clued me in on both. I must have downloaded 100 songs that night.

Here's one not asked: My first reel-to-reel was a bootleg of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon I made from a friend's record. For a long time I stuck to reel-to-reels because you could pirate music on them. Still have a bunch of my old TDK reels.
