  • Tom Herman Fired as UT Football Coach

    texifornia
Almost as unceremonious as his past 2 victories to finish off the season, Tom "the turtle" Herman has been removed as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

We don't really wish you anything, but to get the hell out of here Tom.

Who were the teams with brand new coaches that brought all these transfers in that worked out immediately?

Both Oklahoma and A&M's current starting LTs came from the portal this offseason. Jahmir Johnson and Wanya Morris.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we won't get again. The odds of grabbing a high-quality OL starter from the portal are already pretty slim, blOU and A&M tookadvantage of the chaos in the wake of Pruitt's departure while we lost out. Next year we probably won't find enough in the portal to turn this O-line around, and then you and the rest of Sark's sunshine pumpers can throw up your hands and proclaim "it's not Sark's fault! There just weren't good options in the portal." while we struggle again next year.

Well, it's not like either team got an entire functional OL from the portal.  They got one guy apiece.

You seem to be simultaneously arguing that we could have gotten either Johnson or Morris (one guy) last year, but we need more than one guy  and won't be able to do it next year.  At this point, I think we could improve the situation with a couple of serviceable guys from low P5/G5 schools.  Maybe kind of below the radar dudes like Calvin Anderson.

We get one of those guys and put Kerstetter at LG and I would consider that a workable left side OL. Like Anderson/Vahe in 18. Angilau and Jones on the right side may work out better than they do on the left side. QBs wouldn't have all day but Bijan would have plenty of holes opening for him.

Sucks Cosmi left early. We're hurting for talent and depth. Herman had some good OLs and I was hoping we had turned the corner during his tenure. This year is definitely a regression to late Mack/Strong era OLs.

The more I think about it, the more I am guessing that Sark is a little bit flummoxed by the players inability to understand the game and to execute the plays. Sometimes they pull it off and we look amazing (RRS first half) and then we can’t seem to get anything right after a little adversity.

We got Calvin Anderson from the portal a few years ago and he was a solid pickup and he helped contribute to a serviceable line compared to the horrible line in Herman’s first year.

No, Mack would've melted down by now. He was burned out and couldn't keep up with where CFB was headed. We would've had the same type seasons that Charlie had. Mack's mentality was part of the problem. Go look at the 2014 schedule and see how it goes in any way differently with Mack at the helm. Maybe Mack lucks into a win against a down by their standards OU team. Maybe he beats UCLA. He would've averaged maybe 7-8 wins a year but there would've been losing seasons mixed in.

I think Mack struggled with the dog and pony show distractions and that forced him to rely on others more and they couldn’t do the job as well. So recruiting tanked and play suffered.

I also think Greg Davis must have been a big part of identifying recruits because after him it really dropped off.

I also recall thinking that we had the worst offensive line back then because Colt was sacked against a prevent defense. Holy shit was I wrong.

Kerstetter is a COVID super senior - he gone. Plus he’s not very good at guard anyway.

Tackle sports are an absolute mess next season. Karic shouldn’t be written off yet as a RS FR but even if he progresses into a serviceable starter next year there’s still the Christian Jones issue. He absolutely can be written off. If the LT spot isn’t upgraded next year, uh oh. And it could be even worse if Karic does not develop under Flood.

This is how the portal needs to be used. The portal is best to add depth or patch (not completely retool) a unit. By definition, the portal is full of people who are dissatisfied or not playing at their current school. You're not going to rebuild an entire line via the portal.

Just two guys, such as a Donovan Jackson or Damieone George type can completely change the OL next year.

Kerstetter has been an asset as a utility lineman. He doesn't excel anywhere but he's good enough and he is very good when he's matched with someone reliable by his side. We'll certainly miss him when he's gone.

There are no good answers this year. It would've helped to pick up a good transfer but all the preseason media said our OL would be a strength. Likely the coaches thought so too. Joke's on us.

We probably need to grab a T and G for next year. Karic may develop but is he solid as a game 1 starter next fall? Maybe. Conner will be a soph and could be solid at G, but he's young. Those two can maybe hold down the right side, but we need answers for the left. Angilau is serviceable at LG, but we'll definitely need a reliable tackle. I don't see one on the current roster.

    Greg Davis trigger

2010 saw a Texas team bereft of offensive talent and it impacted us for years. Partly because Davis wasnt in charge and accountable for recruits. Mack did a lot of things by committee and we suffered in finding an identity after Colt. Its hard to recruit to a system, let alone do effective evals, when things are so fluid.

He asked Davis to run a completely different offense than he knew how to run with a QB who had never done anything like that before.  I don't blame 2010 on Davis at all.  Mack made the decision to go all in on Gilbert and not recruit a QB for a year.

    2010 was completely Mack's fault.

Then Greg Davis went on to guide Iowa to 5 straight seasons without an offense in the Top 50. And I think twice outside the Top 100.

Seriously where does Greg Davis end and Mack Brown begin? Based on Mack Brown’s direction, his offenses were risk adverse and good enough against outmatched opponents and blown up most years by good defenses. They deteriorated rapidly behind the edifice of Colt McCoy’s genius.

You were not going to run the Dink and Dunk spread system with our personnel in 2010 and win games. The scheme switch just compounded our problems, but maybe helped a bit in 2011 when Harsin implemented a pro scheme.

Mack Greg Davis were smart and won a lot of football games. But they left us a steaming pile as the game passed them by.

Mack left us the steaming pile.  Greg Davis was a pretty good OC.  Iowa sucks.   and thats all I have to say about that.

Yeah, I have to believe that he mistook the absolute shittiness with the downgrade from Bama to Texas/Big12.  And some of it was masked a little by playing shitty on shitty.

I still maintain that Mack and Greg were a bit of a toxic combo.  Mack didn't fundamentally trust the passing game and Greg was all about it.  So you got some weird results, sometimes.  But, on balance, a pretty potent offense.

I suspect the Ferentz/Big10/Davis combo was some of the same.

I agree we likely beat the brakes off of Kansas, but it’s hardly a lock. Call it 75% chance we win.

KS and WVU are 50/50 games. I have no confidence we can defeat either.

More than ever right now, I agree with Herman. Winning is hard.

Lets remember what got Herman ultimately fired was players on the team telling recruits NOT to come here.  He wasn't going to have a better year coaching the team.

I'm starting to think that the players who were telling recruits NOT to come here, came to Texas so they could party in Austin and they were pissed off that Herman was actually making them work. Hell, that's actually pretty much what the $9.95's were saying in the weeks before we fired Herman. It was something along the lines of "Herman has these guys working harder than at OU without having OU results. It's causing discontent". I'm sure glad the Big Money Pricks listened to these players! How are these disgruntled players performing with a players coach? 5 straight losses with multiple blow outs and Kansas's first conference road win in over a decade.

At least with Herman I could look forward to us blowing the fucking out of our bowl opponent. We aren't making a bowl game this year and if we some how do, I expect us to lose by 3 touchdowns.

Yep, we should’ve realized this wasn't a good move when the loser Charlie Strong players (aka Charles O and Deshon Elliott) hated Herman but love Sark.

Stop listening to the pussy players.

I'll be interested to see how Herman does in his next stop. There's a chance he was hindered by the AD here and he definitely was sabotaged by the inability to keep the Meyer talks secret. I mean the guy went 7-3 during the covid season last year and lost to ok in overtime

We won a lot of those games, including taking OU to OT by the skin of Sam's teeth.

Not to mention losing to last year’s OU team in OT isn’t some sort of accomplishment. They were 0-2 in conference play, Texas had three NFL draft picks on the LOS and a senior, NFL QB vs a first year QB that got benched on the OU side.

Texas was built to win the Big 12 in 2019 and 2020. Herman took seven conference Ls over those two years and didn’t even qualify for a CCG.

    • I was bored and went through the coaching staffs for each of the remaining playoff teams.  Listed below are the coaches who seemed like possibilities to me (but I'm an idiot).  They all have some college coaching experience and in the case of one an extensive HS coaching background.  A couple of entries have pretty light resumes but have long NFL careers.

      Houston Texans:
Jacques Cesaire DL coach - 5 years at Univ of San Diego as DL coach, 9 years as DE for San Diego Chargers
      Rod Wright Asst DL Coach

      Green Bay Packers:
Jerry Montgomery DL coach -11 years in college at OU, Michigan, Wyoming.  Last 9 years in NFL

      Detroit Lions:
John Scott Jr. DL Coach - First year in Detroit.  Previously coached at Penn St., South Carolina, and Arkansas
Wayne Blair QC - Long time Florida HS head coach, spent last two years coaching DLine in Detroit.  Played at Tulane and CFL

      Buffalo Bills:
Marcus West Asst D-Line - Prior to joining Bills in 2022 spent 14 years as college D-Line coach (Charlotte, Minn, Austin Peay)

      San Francisco 49ers:
Darryl Tapp Asst D-Line - 12 year NFL veteran.  Coached D-Line at V-Tech for 2 seasons.  Joined 49ers in 2022.

    • I'm not doing well about it, at all.

That's because we had our championship window of opportunity, which is now closed.

Why? Because now we face another, more potent opponent. The Fightin' Aggies of Texas A&M University.
They have THE best traditions in all of college. Plus, they've already surpassed us in baseball and basketball. Don't believe me? Consider this recent post from TexasAgs: "We've already surpassed them in baseball and basketball."

What's more, they demonstrated an unquenchable commitment to success when they paid a coach $78 MILLION to leave. That's right. $78 million to a coach they had presented a future national championship trophy to stop coaching, and they did it mid-season without a replacement locked-in. While it seems like this is poor financial management by their athletic department, it shows a spirit of winning we could only dream about.

Now, they've brought in a coach who gets them. That's right. He EMBRACES their traditions. And he has a great nickname, The Elk, which pairs with The Station quite nicely. We don't even have an amazing nickname for our city.

      +

Finally, when you compare the two football programs, A&M comes out ahead. As many of their posters continually point out, they faced a much better Alabama team than we did AND ALMOST WON. Plus, they paid tribute to their near-win against the second-best team in the Big 12.

Now that they've moved on from many of their players from the best recruiting class of all time, and have had multiple highly ranked recruits opt out, they are ready to win even more championships with hardworking farm boys from small towns.

Thanks for indulging my meltdown. I'm skeered real good.
