  1. Just spent the evening with one of my closest friends whose brother had a street renamed in his memory. https://www.americantheatre.org/2025/05/30/on-the-street-where-he-lived-terrence-mcnally-way-unveiled/ Jonathan Groff at the ceremony.
  2. Beaumont can probably stand on it’s own as all the AA flights are codeshares with Quatar Airways. The locals don't acknowledge it, but we are, for all practical purposes, subsidized by Sovereign Wealth Fund investments in NG Liquifaction plants. Still, Jefferson County does have to pay AA a sweetener if this fails.
  3. The best thing a fly fishing guide ever did was to tuck the rod butt up under my jacket cuff to keep me from getting too wristy; when I’m on I can throw it a long way and land a fly without a ripple.
  4. * and unlike “our” Baylor football players on the payroll, Pescado would have been a productive employee /SWC
  5. That would feel freaky and unnatural to me, but then again I've got 48 years of muscle memory doing it my way. One of my best friends, a guy I've worked with for over 20 years is coming down from Dallas for the weekend. He was laid off recently, and actually had an anxiety attack so severe it landed him in the ER. So Im going to take him on long boat rides to all my honey holes this weekend and we are going to practice mindfulness and casting. I've never fished with him so Friday afternoon I suspect I’ll be swapping handle sides on spinning gear and getting him a LA license and play acting fishing guide all weekend. Please God can we be blessed with June weather patterns? Is 5-10 variable from the SSW such a heavy ask?
  6. As a natural lefty, this is the first time I pondered that most people shift the rod to a different hand to reel.
  7. If I had know you back then I’d have put you on the payroll. Running the Beaumont location was so fun except when fishing/hunting license renewal days came around. Had to almost break the ballpoint pen to do those triplicate forms. And, of course, everytime all the guns were stolen. One of our assistant managers was an Academy founder.
  8. Do you by chance remember Gibson’s’ on 11th in Beaumont?
  9. A whole bunch of Reddington/Loomis from 3-12 wt, nothing extravagant.
  10. Ok dumb question time. Do you right-handed people use left hand cranked baitcasters/spinning reels? I cast lefty and crank righty, does that mean I fish left or right-handed? Same with fly rods. I ask because dad was right handed and after he died I had to convert a dozen spinning reels to RH crank. I suspect I’m about to convert a half dozen fly reels/spools to the same. But if I go search “baitcasting reels” everything comes up, generally speaking, with RH cranks. So am I really a RH fisherman or was dad a righty who fished lefty? Legit question as I consider myself lefty but I golf righty and throw/catch lefty. And I know I’m goofy AF because that's how I skateboard/snowboard.
  11. At some point I need to go through the locker containing a dozen fly rods and reels. And I have a glass presentation case full of redfish flies my dad tied. This will occupy the 2nd half of my midlife crisis.
  12. People who use gulps are also dumb enough to get out of a perfectly good dry comfortable boat and slog around casting./end Sabine/LA rant. I'm really just giving y'all shit because currently all my fishing is in places non-conducive to wading, and I have easy access to whatever live I want. Prior to losing my beachfront house to Ike I spent incalculable hours tossing tout tails, spoons, and mirrOlures from the 2nd sandbar, and on the backside of East Bay. Hell, my dad owned the sporting goods store.
  13. And jobs? My personal conservative estimate is that $150B in salaries have been eliminated or offshored or AI’d in 2025. I don't believe any government figures.
  14. Christ on a cracker haven't you heathens heard of live bait?
  15. Just left the Camel Club AA in Las Vegas. Had a few newcomers who spent last night locked up. Definitely an interesting mix, good meeting. Met a guy who met Bill Wilson in 1961. So spiritual he almost levitated. Returned to my luxury suite at Bellagio for sleep and to prepare for yet another day of discussing enterprise software tomorrow. On the way to the elevators I was ruminating on whether it would take 1 hour or 2 to completely unravel what sobriety has given me if I decided to catch a case of the fuckits. People watching, scratching my head and wondering how everyone here can walk around and function without self-immolating. Grateful to be sober, safe, and reasonably sane.
  16. The real bill sponsor is thinking ahead to when all big rigs are safely self-driving and there are no trucking companies left to sue.
  17. My sister was a AUSA in OR and regularly mailed gummies to my wife in Texas. IIRC they said to use the USPS because they'd need a federal warrant to intercept vs a state warrant for UPS or FedEx.
  18. In Trejo’s autobiography, which I own and cherish because his life is truly fascinating, he talks about how during his criminal childhood they avoided starting shit with average law abiding citizens because they were “Republicans” - which was his gang’s catch-all slang for people who would bring heat from law enforcement, not for people of any particular political affiliation. If you haven't read his book, I recommend it.
  19. All Sunday afternoons can't be awesome finishes. I was rooting for Schmid because I always root for people to win their first event. I woke up from my nap sometime during 60 Minutes and had to check the app to see who won.
  20. 8 x 10lb pork butts on the recteq for a church pulled pork luncheon tomorrow. Having to do 4 at a time since Ive only got the 590. First batch turned out excellent, overnight cook and the 2nd is approaching the stall. As I pulled in to take the 1st batch to put in the industrial sized fridges in the church kitchen I spotted my grandmother’s memorial stained glass window in the sanctuary and smiled to myself. And wondered if she was looking in from heaven thinking “we raised our brood well” or if she grabbed my grandfather and said “look, Howard, our grandson is a complete dumbass!” Probably the latter. I should probably make a deal with the building committee - I’ll continue to cook a few times a year, but they have to buy a huge Yoder, or I smell a deductible donation coming my way.
  21. My saintly grandmother used to write lengthy family letters with her IBM Selectric typewriter with the cursive font ball. I had sever framed, they are precious heirlooms.
