  1. That may be a contentious matter of opinion. Personally, I don’t think so, but Rogan, along with many others, certainly benefited from an improved climate change within The Comedy Store after he was allowed to return around 6 or 7 years ago. For anyone not familiar with that, Rogan had a falling out with his representation after calling out one of the Store’s biggest stars at the time, Carlos Mencia, as a habitual and unapologetic joke thief, the unforgivable sin of the stand up world. Rogan’s call out and confrontation with Mencia was supported by the working comics, but not by the the club manager, and he wouldn’t be welcome there until years later. On the other hand, I’m sure The Comedy Store has received a lot of positive exposure to more people because of all the different successful podcasts hosted by LA comics who work out of that club. That club has been iconic since way before the likes of Joe Rogan, but having a podcast with that reach surely doesn’t hurt. I don’t want to hijack the thread, but the thing that interests me about “the Rogan effect” is how or if his move to Austin will affect the comedy scene here. Like you mentioned, him and his buddies, as well as other LA comics/podcasters, talk up The Store with the fondness of it as their local gym. They talk about it being an inclusive environment with a tight not community that encourages and fosters comedians. I don’t see Rogan, and others, coming to Austin without some confidence of being able to create a comparable creative comedy scene that will attract more established and up and coming talent. It will be interesting to follow what happens with comedy in Austin.
  2. Really enjoying this show so far. Like others have mentioned, I’m a huge fan and consumer of stand up, and have always been fascinated by that scene and the inner workings of that world. There are a number of clubs around the country that could warrant and support this kind of documentary or docu-series. Even casual fans of comedy know The Comedy Store and The Comedy Cellar. Excluding this year of course, I always make sure I get a couple of trips to the Store when I’m in LA, and a night or two at the Cellar when I’m in Manhattan. The lineups and drop ins at those places on any given night (outside of open mics) has reached the point of well known and established killers one after the other. I love shows like Crashing, IDUH, and Marvelous Ms Maisel, but it’s really cool to have a no bullshit documentary series telling the story of one of the iconic comedy clubs from the point of view of comics for whom the Store was or still is their “gym” to develop and work out their sets. And for whoever doesn’t like the schtick of Pauly Shore or Nikki Glaser, they’re not doing their material in the show, just providing anecdotal testimony about the club and the scene. It’s definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of comedy beyond just enjoying the finished product of the one hour special.
  3. Turtle mode engaged. Commence operation snatch defeat from jaws of victory
  4. Texas winning a 3rd quarter against a conference team and it feels like we’re losing
  5. La Vuelta: “Let’s let the GC guys get after it, and I don’t mean “get after it” with an ITT, but with a real climb on Stage 1”. Dumolin loses a minute to his teammate Roglic who wins the stage. Thibaut loses 10 minutes, Froome 11 minutes. Okay Vuelta, you have my attention.
  6. The Giro is hanging on by a thread. The ‘Rona is running rampant and JV packed it in. Cool to see Sagan win in old Sagan fashion. I was starting to wonder if that guy was ever gonna win another race.
  7. Only those who have actually been in the audience at a Bill Burr gig in the last few years will fully understand what a ridiculous and inaccurate take this is.
  8. Whatever keeps us from having to possibly endure a horrible cover version of a Jason Isbell masterpiece is fine with me.
  9. That open was horrible and terribly written. Burr’s monologue was funny, but if you’ve seen him perform in the last couple of years, that was largely reworked bits he’s been doing live for awhile. Let’s see where this goes.
  10. https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/paris-roubaix-cancelled-after-covid-19-cases-rise-in-northern-france/ That sucks. That’s always been one of my favorite races.
  11. First Neil, now this RIP Eddie - guitar hero, legend, and innovator Fuck Cancer Fuck 2020
  12. I wish my “messing up in a couple of places” sounded like Eric Johnson’s messing up in a couple places.
  13. I thought about posting this yesterday, but wasn’t sure if anyone else watched that channel. You’re right, it’s an interesting idea, but the whole thing really was just waiting to see how EJ would interpret that space. He is still amazing. He makes it look and sound almost effortless.
  14. Can I raise a practical question at this point. Are they gonna do Stonehenge?
  15. No kidding. I wasn’t buying his supposed enthusiasm to focus on the Giro after being left off the Tour squad. Another weird crash knocks him out of contention.
  16. Pretty surprising gaffe for a pro like Alaphilippe. Not only pipped at the line by a hard charging Roglic, he was also relegated in the sprint. Watching that live I couldn’t believe when he sat up. Hope we see see some action on the way up Etna later.
  17. I thought it was going to blow Rohan off the road earlier. Really twitchy out there. That Lopez crash was quick and bizarre, but shit can get out of hand in the blink of an eye on a TT bike.
  18. Yeah, sure. That has all the contrition of a Lance Armstrong explanation of the treatment of his doping accusers and critics.
  19. Anyone have suggestions for watching the Giro? I think I can access live feed using my VPN and it looks like there is coverage for US and Canada on Flobikes.
