  1. We were at our cabin for Christmas, and I had driven my F150. My wife insisted on going to town with one of my daughters for some after-Christmas shopping. They get home after dark, and I see her maneuvering back and forth in the driveway. I go outside to help because I was afraid she would hit someone else’s car. By the time I got out there, she - with my daughter as navigator - only had one tire on the concrete. It’s not as flat as it appears in this pic, but if she had continued backing up, she would’ve been down in the creek. As it turns out, she had unilaterally decided to drive my daughter to the airport for her early morning flight and didn’t want to back out of the driveway in the dark. I told her to pull onto flat ground and let me park the truck. Zoom in for tire tracks as well as snow tracks:
  2. True story about my first glimpse of real, live, early 70s boobs the summer before I turned 11. I was a paperboy on my route one day (very small town in SD), and one of my sister’s friends (~16) was washing her car in the driveway. Jody was a pretty lass, barefoot and dressed in cut-offs and a halter top, so I stopped my bike to say hi. I surprised her, and she quickly stood up. Her halter top was the type that tied around her neck, but it came untied and quickly fell down because it was wet. It took her a second or two to drop her hose and sponge and turn around, so I got a good look. It changed my life. I told my sister about this decades later, and she told Jody at their 20-year reunion. She laughed because she remembered that glorious summer day. Jody didn’t live to see her 40th birthday, though. She was driving north on a rural highway just before sundown with her visor flipped down over her side window. She had her Walkman headphones on and didn’t see or hear the eastbound train.
  3. It would be magical if we could have a thread of family bitching about Surly posters. With all the dysfunction within our “community,” it would be fun to try to match up the stories with the Surly posters.
  4. Late on this one, but I remember he was a known to be a legendary sweater (perspiration). Seemed like every game on tv they mentioned that he lost double digits in body weight despite drinking fluids during the game.
  5. Rule #1 from these knockout threads: Don’t get in a fight on concrete, asphalt, or tile.
  6. You’re right, breakneck is a relative term. Going 70 on a residential street is breakneck, but not on a freeway… unless you’re going 70 on the shoulder during slow rush hour traffic. In the scenario described, I’d always bet that someone driving aggressively enough to draft like it’s NASCAR is probably going closer to 90 than, say, 80. I’d still call that breakneck speed although I might choose another description.
  7. He said he’d move over, just not do it at a breakneck speed to match the tailgater.
  8. This spoiled little shit really pisses me off, and I don’t even like waffles. Damn kid hogged the waffle maker and probably ate 4 bites.
  9. Cottonwood cabin that lasted 40-50 years? I’m officially impressed.
  10. One of my daughters is trying to get to us before Christmas. She suffers from depression and needs daily human interaction to keep her spirits up. She sent this pic of I-90, so we’re hoping it gets cleared a bit more so she can make it. Fortunately, only 350 miles of her trip is on I-90.
  11. We made a stew last night, and I thought I’d set the pot outside for just a bit to cool before transferring it to refrigerator containers. That just a bit turned into an hour, and -15 froze it solid. I said fuck it left it there. Fired up the wood burning stove today and put the pot on instead of using the stovetop. It’s almost ready.
  12. Lows at our cabin in the Black Hills were -23 two nights ago (wind chills -50s), with highs still below zero. It was -12 last night when my daughter and fiancé came over for steaks. I still wanted to grill (lump charcoal and wood, too cold for propane) because that’s what I do, but everyone freaked out that I would even consider such a thing. I wanted to set a PR and have a story, but I gave in and used cast iron. I should’ve held my ground. Shoveling snow was a bitch in windchills around -30 yesterday. I just checked our propane tank, and we are <10% full. Our supplier has a program that’s supposed to keep us from running out, but with our erratic usage, they fail in that mission every few years. I should’ve checked it earlier, but at least it didn’t run out on Christmas Day. All of the state and federal highways have a no travel advisory. The interstate highways across the state are officially closed, so some family can’t get here, at least for now. My daughter barely made her connection in MSP Monday night or she would still be there. Family driving from Texas are stranded in Chadron, Nebraska. Highs are rebounding into the 40s then low-50s beginning Christmas Day, so that will be a welcome change.
  13. Speaking of mountain lions, my 4th grade teacher had us write a story from an animal’s perspective. I chose to write about how I, as a cougar, killed a deer. I then wrote about how I ate certain organs before the meat. I think I began by cracking open the skull to eat the brain. The teacher was horrified, and my mom was called in for a parent teacher conference.
  14. I’m pretty sure you’re correct. I never noticed how thin the eye sockets are on some canines. With so much of the snout missing, I was also confusing the nasopharynx with the beginnings of a narrow palate (my wife taught college anatomy classes after her M.D. career, so please don’t tell her). I catch more red fox on my cameras than coyotes, so that might be what it was. Coyote:
  15. Not really a hunting topic, but I found something when I was setting up trail cams, and is been bugging me for months. I found a skull without any other skeletal remains. I can’t identify it, and it lacks eye sockets. There are no chupacabras in the Black Hills, and the last I heard, they have eyes. Smart ass comments are welcome because I got nothing else.
