  1. I don't know yet. They are supposed to send a new summons in the mail soon. All I know is the date.
  2. I'm not special. There seems to be some confusion between not wanting to do something and not doing something. At least for me, those are 2 different things. I don't want to have jury duty. I am going to jury duty. I gave my reasons for not wanting jury duty, which seems to have struck a nerve with a couple people, but it doesn't change the fact that I am going to jury duty. Although if I'm one of the people that gets dismissed before showing up, that would make me pretty happy. Sorry if that's a bad attitude to have, but I'm never going to want jury duty and I don't think that's a minority opinion on the matter.
  3. We’ve had at least one ski trip every year for the past 10 years. Thought this year would be our year to miss out due to having a baby, but we saw too many IG videos of badass powder days and we impulse booked this coming weekend in Telluride. We will only ski one day but that’s enough to scratch the itch and Telluride is our domestic home away from home. Give me some Brown Dog and a Tempter IPA, please and thank you. Maybe a long lunch at Bon Vivant with some runs down The Plunge to finish out the day. So excited.
  4. It's a show with a great story, acting, music, and overall production quality, set in a world where zombies exist. If you really hate zombies stories, then the positives probably can't overcome that, which is fine. Certainly not for everyone. If you're willing to give it a chance beyond the occasional zombie scene, it's been a fantastic series so far. That's why your coworker wanted you to try it so much, which you did and it simply may not be for you.
  5. Just curious, why is the lack of a smoking gun reason to believe that it came from the wild? For me, I kind of lean the opposite. If it came from the wild and China had any evidence to support that, I think they would be eagerly sharing that information to absolve themselves from any societal wrongdoing. It was a true case of bad luck for humanity and here are the facts to support that. The lack of transparency from China makes me lean more in the direction of human negligence within the Wuhan lab. I honestly don't know and I don't think the general public will ever know.
  6. I enjoyed tonight's episode. It didn't advance the plot much, but I think it adds a lot of depth to Ellie's character and helps us understand her motivations for certain things.
  7. Wow, okay. Let's back up for a second because I'm honestly interested in some adult discord on this subject, beyond you telling me to eat a dick or you hoping that I eventually get sued. 1. Do I want to have jury duty or be selected to be on the jury? No. (simple answer, as I stated before) 2. What is my reason for not wanting jury duty? I feel a strong sense of responsibility to my patients and don't want to reschedule a day of clinic, let alone multiple days or even weeks of clinic and/or surgical appointments. That responsibility applies to any unplanned absences - personal illness, family emergencies, ice storms, jury duty, etc. Which of my responses do you have a problem with? If it is #1, do you feel that everyone should welcome jury duty with open arms? Look forward to it? Feel honored to take part in it? Any negative feelings towards jury duty make someone a bad person? If it is #2, where do you draw the line between a valid reason for wanting out of jury duty vs. an invalid reason or selfish reason? Please note that I am not asking for a list of actual legal exemptions because that has already been provided and I have already stated that I am going. I would merely be wondering, what in your mind constitutes a valid reason for an individual person to not want to do it?
  8. Man, sorry if I struck a nerve with that, but yeah I do care more about my job than I care about being on a jury. That doesn't mean my job is more important than yours or anyone else's, nor did I ever say anything along those lines. It simply means that in my own personal list of priorities, showing up for work is more important to me than whatever civic duty I am supposed to feel in regards to being on a jury. I try pretty hard to avoid unplanned absences because I know how that affects other people, especially on short notice. I feel like when someone makes an appointment to see me, that I have a commitment to them and I need to be respectful of their time. Maybe they've scheduled their own work around that appointment, or maybe they have a family member traveling from out of town to help them. Whatever the case, there's a ripple effect for some people and I try to minimize that as much as possible. Am I unique in this? Certainly not, which is why I said that I understand why other people would also want to get out of jury duty.
  9. Went to Lucille's yesterday and had a bloody mary so this post hits close to home.
  10. I never said anywhere in my post that my job is more important than anyone else's job. I said that it's problematic with my line of work, and I can understand that it would be problematic for many other working people as well, and it's no surprise that people want to get out of it, myself included.
  11. I’ve been playing the game for the first time and just caught up to the point of Joel’s injury. Wife convinced me to stop to avoid spoilers but it’s very tempting to keep going. At first I assumed he would live through it, but I’m considering the possibility that he could die and the game/show could shift to everything being from Ellie’s perspective. I hope not because the dynamic between them makes the story great. I’m not entirely sure we’ll get the answer to this question tonight.
  12. I got summoned for the first time back in the fall. I filled out the online form and deferred it. The next summons came a couple months ago and I couldn’t defer online, so I emailed them and they gave me a one month deferral. My next date is March 20 which I plan to go to. I’m not sure if I could’ve deferred again but I didn’t want to eventually get stuck with a very bad date down the road. I’m a physician and these have all been relatively short notice, requiring me to reschedule 30+ appointments that were already booked. Very frustrating for me and not all patients are super understanding of that because they had already made their own arrangements to be at their appointment. I definitely do not want to be picked. I don’t care about my civic duty because my primary duty is to my patients and if I’m selected for the jury and have to miss multiple days or even weeks, that’s highly problematic for everyone. I realize other people also have important jobs and jury duty is rarely convenient, but this is potentially a huge pain in the ass and it’s understandable why people really wouldn’t want to do it.
  13. You may be right. I did some random searches on routes I would routinely book each year and the amount of miles required is pretty high. Significantly higher than AA which I'm more familiar with their mileage redemption. I'm concerned that even when I do want to fly Delta, which is once every 1-2 years, the flights I would want will require too many miles and I'll end up just paying cash then anyways. Can't decide if it's worth a $250 AF just for the sake of stockpiling 90k miles that I may use one day.
  14. I can’t imagine starting and not finishing Top Gun. You had to know what you were signing up for and it delivered exactly that. It’s not like you thought it was one kind of movie and then got a different kind of movie. If you don’t like that, why even start it?
  15. I’ve recently done CSR, CSP, and Amex Gold. I’m not eligible for Capital One currently. I fly mostly AA and rotate their Citi and Barclay cards to get signup bonuses and other small perks. If there was another good offer in front of me then maybe I would take it, but I do occasionally fly Delta so it seems reasonable to pay a $250 AF to bank 90k miles that won’t expire. I would cancel the card after the bonus. Someone point me in the right direction if there’s a better option out there.
  16. Well in the game Joel would definitely be flashing red right now but he’s still alive and has time to press the big center button and craft a health kit (assuming they have 1 rag and 1 water), then he would need to press Up and R2 and he would be good again. But yeah, I’m curious how they resolve this.
  17. That’s impossible. He already said he doesn’t care.
  18. This season has been a masterpiece thus far.
  19. I got a Delta 90k miles offer in the mail. It’s for the Platinum Amex with a $250 annual fee after $4k spend. I don’t fly Delta too often, but it almost seems worth it since the miles never expire.
  20. I think that’s the beauty of the story, we care about the characters, even the ones that are only there briefly. Great writing to be able to trigger that emotional response. Compare that to TWD where they created stupid characters and then threatened imminent death to Rick and Coral so many times that we all just wanted them to die and end our misery as viewers.
  21. After talking with Vanguard, I think I figured it out, which made me realize I didn't understand the backdoor Roth IRA process as much as I originally thought. I can contribute up to $6,000/year into the traditional IRA, which I did. (fwiw, it will be $6,500 starting this year) That is not tax deductible due to my income. After that, it doesn't matter if it accrues interest before converting to Roth. It also doesn't matter which year I convert it to Roth, but whichever calendar year that occurs in, will be reflected on the 1099-R for that year, regardless of the year that the original contribution was made to my traditional IRA. So for last year, I contributed $6,000 to my traditional IRA, and I took a $5,005 distribution as a backdoor Roth conversion. At least that's how I now understand it.
  22. Nice thread and pics. Would like to go there myself at some point. Did I miss a conflict from another board that spilled over into this thread, or did multiple posters just decide to be assholes to the OP because of spelling?
  23. I'm having problems figuring out my backdoor Roth IRA conversions and reporting. I probably messed the process up and now it's made tax reporting more complicated. TurboTax support isn't giving me a straight answer. I contributed $6,000 to my traditional IRA account, spread out in $1,000-2,000 increments throughout the year. It goes into the Vanguard Federal Money Market fund, where it typically gets converted within a week over to my Roth IRA account, then redistributed into my chosen funds. Problem #1 - With my final contribution and conversion, I got distracted and busy towards the end of the year. The contribution to the traditional IRA occurred in 2022 but the conversion to Roth for that final amount didn't get done until 1/12/23, so it isn't showing up on my 1099-R. When I made the conversion, I realized this "mistake" but I thought it would be fine since IRA contributions are allowed up until April 15 for the previous year. Maybe that doesn't hold true for backdoor Roth conversions? Problem #2 - At some point, I probably neglected to do a conversion in a timely manner and it accrued interest while still in the traditional IRA account. I'm not sure which time that was, but my 1099-R form shows a gross distribution of $5,005 (so clearly I picked up $5 somewhere) and that final conversion that didn't appear on the 1099-R shows $1,009 so there's an extra $9 accrued. This means that even though I contributed an even $6,000 to the traditional IRA in 2022, the total conversions is $6,015 which seems like a party foul. Is there a simple way to straighten this out? Do I need to contact Vanguard for help? Is this a big enough deal that I should take it to a CPA and let them do all of my taxes for me?
  24. I celebrate OU losing but I don’t celebrate shitty calls that result in OU losing. That compromises the integrity of the game and then what’s the point in even watching? What if Texas loses on a similar shitty call? What if Texas wins on a similar shitty call and then we always have that moment questioned instead of just kicking the FG with 1:48 remaining and giving our defense a chance to hold? Celebrating this call is chickenshit behavior.
  25. There’s nothing more pathetic than Cowboys fans celebrating a bad call to end an otherwise great Super Bowl because the bad call hurts a rival team. Basically a franchise that has a shitty owner that prevents ever even reaching a Super Bowl, so they are stuck celebrating bad outcomes for everyone else. Congrats?
