  1. Its not so much that the SI article is meaningless. I'd be pissed, not stunned, if we didn't reach 10 wins. Meanwhile, though, this is the high hopes pre season phase and we don't want any examination of downsides.
  2. Which is why he had no future at McKinsey.
  3. Jack Bauer? Must be a generational thing.
  4. Now if the question is about regrets for things done that we wouldn't do if given the chance.... I could fill a dump truck with the nonsense I have pullled up to about yesterday.
  5. Yes on the Moose. Also always crowded, they are printing money. Decent beer, too. Back to the OP question, I lived in Anc 3 years in the 80's. Saw the lights twice during that time. So setting the goal as seeing the lights, within a one week period, looks kind of unrealistic. As Mac and others have said, there is a great variety of things to do and see. Getting a plan organized is a good idea. Just arriving and driving may not work well. The inside passage cruises and their excursions are a pretty good entre to SE Alaska (Juneau, Ketchikan, etc), if cruises are your thing. Guided fishing on the Kenai peninsula, or out of Homer, is great. I go with 3 other guys to fish out of Homer a couple of days, then about 5 days on the Kenai for sockeye. We bring back about 100# of filet per man. If the day is decent, that is, the seas don't scare the shit out of you, then being on a 28 ft boat in Gulf of Alaska beyond the Barren Islands is like some scene from a science fiction novel. Some alternative planet. Just incredible.
  6. First thing that comes to mind, similar to Gil Bang, is I would have worked harder, academically, starting earlier. But what would have come of that? I can't imagine wanting more in terms of life and life's experiences than I have already. And by most any measure, I did work hard enough, soon enough. Which brings to mind that this is not as useful an exercise as asking what to do now.
  7. Don't call our policies dark ages! Not out loud! Seems keeping this con going is his main concern. He is a perfect representative.
  8. First class rant. Crazier would be better, but what the hell.
  9. Reminds me of the time I was relieving el jefe for a week at a remote operations camp in Kazakhstan. We had a couple thousand, 85% guys, there any given time. I receive a confidential email in his inbox from the camp doc, who informs me there is some very rare and wierd disease running amok in camp. In consult with the CDC, we were going to need sperm samples from all the men. Well I read this real slow about 3 times to make sure what I was understanding was in fact what he was saying. Yep. Then the process of trying to figure out how the hell we are agoing to work this commences, with no small amount of stress building. Then I realize it is April 1.
  10. Hank - it is totally worth it. Future you will like.
  11. Rent an electric boat on lake union. Bring food and an icechest of beer. Plug in your ipod and play your favorites as you meander among the boats, kyackers, float planes taking off and landing, etc. And the views, man. Boat seats up to 12. This was a regular on my what to do with guests list.
  12. Such a depressing thread. It's good to be not young, and not having to anticipate decades and decades of a GOP senate.
  13. I was still in my petulant disaffected alienated mode when I graduated, and I skipped the ceremony. Plus it was hot, and playing dominoes and drinking beer at Posse East seemed a better option. Then off to CA for a well paying job. Fuck you, I got mine. I did attend my son's graduation from UT, (and daughter's from some liberal arts place), and thought it was a good milestone event to mark. For me, the payee. Seriously, consider going.
  14. I'm all for baby steps, too. I will say, I took shrooms, mescaline, and LSD in college, and again a few years after. Absolutely messed me up each time. Non functional. I suppose the regular public intoxication laws would be suitable for controlling public behavior. Lord help everyone if someone is tripping behind the wheel.
  15. It is a novel humble brag, I will grant.
  16. I used to think, growing up and in my younger adulthood, that Texas was not, regardless of confederate history, really like "the south", with all its issues. All the UT scorn for SEC is along these same lines. However, it turns out that we elect the same quality of state govt as GA, AL, FL, the whole lot. So much for our difference.
  17. Slorch Buddy. No shaming intended, but, for your health, you might consider shedding a few. I know, I carry too much extra myself, and giving up shit is not in my DNA.
  18. Another reason to point out: fuck Disney, and all things Disney.
  19. Reduced opioid addiction rates.
  20. Always a pleasure to learn something important. That is the essence of this thread.
  21. I was 19, working as a roustabout out of Kilgore for Getty. We had a resignation watching party at a friends trailer that evening, got pretty high. Backed my corvair into the bar ditch in front of the trailer, had to have the gang truck gin it out first thing the next morning. So that must have beeen a week night.
  22. They are just getting started. They have just levered the accelerator to the floor, rolled down the windows, stuck their head out like a hound, and are just getting going with enjoying the ride. In fact it is a dog at the wheel. The only mystery is how far away is the Thelma/Louise cliff.
  23. Pretty sure the LGBTQ scene in Houston and Austin is at least as robust as Seattle. There are fewer rodeo style LGBTQ in Seattle, I'll will grant that. In general, of course people have different "looks" in different parts of the country. It is a pity so much regional flavor has been roadgraded over the past decades. This type of variety is a good thing.
