  1. The Swimmer. Based on John Cheever story and starring Burt Lancaster. Studio very unhappy with result and hired Sydney Pollack to direct some changes and made Lancaster pay for last day of shooting. Read the story when I was young and would like to read now at my advanced age, but no longer have the book. I swim everyday and so my interest was to see if there was any like-mindedness. Lancaster picks his route across upper class suburbia and swims his way uninvited in neighbors pools with mixed reaction. It would be a better movie without the studio additions, but the movie that stuck with me. I share very little with the main character, although my ex-wife may find a few resemblances. Burt and I do share the absolute joy of diving in water. He in pools and me in the river.
  2. Hell yeah. Made me laugh after my divorce. BBC's Tinker Tailor and Smiley's People with John Gielgud are excellent. Available on regular youtube. And Fleabag had best answer for favorite period piece...Carrie.
  3. Curious to what your reaction was to Iannucci's other film "In the Loop" In the Loop was an instant comedy classic.
  4. Double feature on TCM: Dodsworth: Have you thought how little happiness there can be for the old wife of a young husband? Kurt! Your mother's leaving. Philadelphia Society: What most wives fail to realize is that their husbands philandering has nothing whatever to do with them. Then what has it to do with? A reluctance to grow old, I think.
  5. Good article about the true story of Great Escape. https://www.history.co.uk/article/the-true-story-of-the-great-escape The Man Who Never Was - Terrific movie and true story of the feint British pulled before invading Sicily.
  6. ESPN's updated too early Top 25 now has 5 B-12 teams. BU-3, KU-6, TT-9, WV-17 and UT-20. UH is 19. Hopefully there will be a season. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/29194264/gonzaga-new-no-1-college-basketball-way-too-early-top-25-2020-21
  7. And when I heard that voice, I immediately thought of 16 Candles.
  8. Brewster McCloud - a WTF movie, but it's Altman and set in Houston. Hudson & Harrigan anyone. The Strange Love of Margaret Ivers - Kurt Douglas was a riot.
  9. The Wire is full of gems.
  10. Not by the Guardian. They have it ranked in arthouse films. https://www.theguardian.com/film/series/the-drama-and-art-film-25?page=2
  11. It might be even lower than that, since the movie, Point Blank was ranked No. 17.
  12. Saw Badlands over the weekend. Surprised to see that it was ranked as #4 on Guardian's List of Best Crime Films. 13. Simple process in watching an old or foreign movie, if you like it, then follow the director, star or something inspiring from the film. Watching Blazing Saddles gets you Treasure of the Sierra Madre or gets you Blue Collar. And from there you check out other John Huston, Bogart or Walter Huston movies or you get Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel and the great Yaphet Kotto in a Paul Schrader film. Blazing Saddles also takes you in a straight line to Brooks and Wilder films.
  14. Burning. Shit going down in South Korea.
  15. Jimmy needed a quick resolution in court, so he could meet with Mike without Kim knowing or suspecting. Perhaps he was out of continuances for that case.
  16. He was terrific in Presumed Innocent as were Greta Scacchi's tits.
  17. Watching movies together separately with the kids through facetime as we're all in separate cities. Started with The Wicker Man last weekend and gonna try Burning (Korean film) tonight. Similar to what we did a few years ago where we'd go see the same movie on the same day and then discuss it the next day.
  18. I remember this album of my parents. Don't remember hearing it.
  19. Seems pretty simple calculations on Gonzaga's side. They played A&M home and away last two years and now Texas. Gonzaga recruits Texas. Timme is on the team and there will be Texans on future Bulldog teams, just as there were in the past.
  20. YTTV with practically unlimited recordings and Eddie Muller is fuckin great .
  21. Albums only paint part of the picture. AM and then FM radio and singles were the way to consume music as a youngun. Growing up the only albums were my parents, so starting with one of theirs and the rest follow as in order of influence. Oscar Brand - Bawdy Songs and Backroom Ballads Various Greatest Hits albums - Rolling Stones, Beatles and Kinks (Ktel collection) Queen - A Night at the Opera After being sent a tape of George Gmarc's show in the early 80's, I started listening to British and alternative music. The Jam - All Mod Cons REM - Murmur Worked in a record store in Florida and these albums were always on the playlist. UB40 - Signing Off Parliament - Mothership Connection Began working at a place that had live country music. Introduced to TVZ, Steve Goodman and Guy Clark. John Prine - first album Leonard Cohen - Greatest Hits (average one night stand that finished with her playing this album in the morning) RIchard and Linda Thompson - Shoot out the Lights So much left out. I need a beer.
