  1. Got there late Monday and did a walk down the beach. Have never seen the water so clean/clear. Very little seaweed. And hardly a soul in sight. Neither were expected. Woke up Tuesday morning to about half an inch of water in the condo and more pouring in through the ceiling and coming under the baseboards. Called the front desk and they asked if I wanted a refund because they weren’t sure how to stop the flooding that was hitting multiple units. Looked at the forecast and packed up and left. Still raining there this morning. Long drive from this far north to just turn back around. But oh well.
  2. I'll be there with family all next week starting on Monday staying at Port Royal. Planning on hitting up a baseball game in Corpus one night--the Hooks are in town all week. Throwing in some fishing gear--but not sure it is going to be worth the hassle. Please let me know if anyone hears of anything cool going on.
  3. Headed in to San Jose, Costa Rica, this morning to get my test before my flight tomorrow. There is a group of us so the testing folks are meeting us at the hotel at check in. On the whole, I feel Costa Rica is doing a decent job. All tourism-related staff (hotels, restaurants, guides) are wearing masks and many places are requiring you to wash hands and have temp taken before entering. I’d say about 70% of the locals I see on the streets are wearing masks. I’ve tried to be good about wearing one when walking around but have forgotten a few times. No one has said anything to me about it.
  4. Bird guide delivered.

  6. Trogon Lodge today up in the cloud forrest. Area attracts lots of birders and is apparently one of the few places you can see a Quetzal. I appreciate a good bird, but we are here just because. Guided bird tour at 5 am that I may make. Did a decent hike today and walked along a river with some small waterfalls. Sitting in the lodge bar know having a glass of wine before a nice dinner. They raise their own trout here in the cold, flowing water so I had smoked trout for lunch. Was excellent. Thinking about a steak for dinner.
  7. Downpour now. Made it just in time to Fuego.
  8. Spent the morning on a beach between here and Ovita. Sitting at Phat Noodle in Dominical now listening to it thunder but rain hasn’t hit yet. Walking down to Fuego as soon as I get the check here. Has been pouring every day from about 3 pm to about 7 pm. Yesterday was just a brief shower but the previous two it was a monsoon. Entering Into prime rain time today. I’m prepared to sit in Fuego until the world floats away.
  9. Yes. I am referring to the park only. Sorry for the confusion. The area is nice and there seems to be a lot going on. Wish we were here another day. Had wings and beer last night at the Jolly Roger and it was very enjoyable. The wings were the biggest I have ever had. Things are closing down early here so if you have a full day of outdoor activity there is not much time in the evenings for just sitting and drinking. I have been too exhausted to stay up late anyway so it has worked out fine. Headed to Dominical after breakfast. Hope to hit up Fuego.
  10. Third trip to Costa Rica and travel around the country rather than sit in one place so I feel I have seen lots of what CR has to offer. To me, there was nothing at Manuel Antonio that you can’t see in other places and with fewer people. It was a nice way to pass some hours, but I was not blown away nor was that my expectation going in. So my rec: Visit the park if you are in the area but I wouldn’t hop of the plane and drive straight there and not leave the area.
  11. Thanks. Saw the little food stand in the park but didn’t need it. Packed in some water and that was good enough. Park is closed today so about to take group to zipline and then afternoon on beach. Will look up your recs tonight for dinner and drinks. Hoping there is some transportation available. Off to Dominical in the morning.
  12. Waking up in Jaco now. About to head to Manuel Antonio. Does anyone know if there are places to buy a sandwich and drinks in the park? Planning on hiking around and laying on the beach but don’t know if I need to pack in food and drinks or I can just buy some simple things there in the park. Also any recommendations for dinner and drinks are appreciated. Will be staying at Hotel San Baba there.
  13. Came here to post about going to Pok Pok. Leaving with the sads.
  14. There is a craft beer, wine and food place called the Bridge that is really nice and has an extensive beer and wine list as well as some hard-to-find cheeses. Nice place. A little more adult and upscale than most craft beer spots. Or at least it was last time I was there. https://www.thebridgestl.com/
  15. That is the breakfast of kings right there. Other than the plastic utensils. What's up with that?
  16. Let us know what you find out. I’m working in Costa Rica coming up in a few weeks and have been to CR multiple times but wife is wanting to do an early August trip. Panama seems cool but I know little about it other than reading the book JustHookIt rec’ed. I’m heading somewhere. Looking at stuff on Jamaica now but Panama may be a better time.
  17. Great book.
  18. So for the true pickle lovers.... I work in Germany quite often. Usually, I am in Berlin, but I go all over from Hamburg to Munich. Anyway, I really love rural Germany so I try to take weekend train trips to little towns. A couple of years ago, one of these excursions led to me ending up in Lubbenau (two dots above the first U), about an hour south of Berlin. Why bring this up in a pickle thread? Well because Lubbenau is Mecca for pickle eater. This is the first thing I saw when I got off the train. s. '' Also interesting is that people travel around this swampy area by riding in these skiffs. Boats and pickles (and of course beer)--what is not to like? This "town" is very small. You pay a buck or two and get in one of these boats. The boat rower, then takes off down the canals. Our captain was evidently super hilarious (for a German) and everyone laughed constantly at his pickle jokes. I don't sprechen sie Deutsch so I have no idea if he was Chappelle or Schumer. He could push pole a skiff pretty good so I'll give him that. This canal has houses all along the sides and even had little skiff garages for the local folk. Many of these picklers also had set up little stands along the way. They would sell both pickles and beer. I partook in many of each. Every so often, you could even leap out and sit among the trees (and Germans) and get a plate. Anyway, these fools were crazy for pickles and I achieved maximum daily pickle allotment. I got damn close on the beer. Slept on the train back to Berlin and went and got more beer--did not get more pickles. When going through my phone to find these pics, I also came across this one. It seems the locals may also beat the hell out of unruly gars with bundles of carrots. So that's pretty cool too.
  19. Tech over Army in 6-3 final. Nice morning here in Lubbock. Wife was at game with her office. My group decided to work. Boo
  20. Damn. Didn’t think about that. I will be there that week as well.
  21. Headed down June 20-28. Will be all over staying at different places almost every night. Haven't been in a few years. Looking forward to getting back down there.
  22. I always have a bottle of this in the liquor cabinet. Botanist is #2. Hendricks #3. A lime and one of the Fever Tree tonics and you're in business.
  23. Come on KC--don't be pussies. Score and then go for 2 just for a little loser flex
