  1. That's going to be awesome! I'm all for the spray paint custom art thing, but if you're trying to keep the mods reversible, maybe have this under the tree for her or have her paint white pick guard. Obviously the tele version
  2. There is a lot to that sentiment. I just can't get past the marginal return issue. Especially when you are taking about a teen. A guy I went to school with given an early vintage strat (pre CBS blah blah). Even back then it was worth more than his car. He only got to play it when he went home because it was too valuable to take to college. He is in a "Dad band" now and you know what? He doesn't play it there either for fear of loss. Plays a PRS instead. Not quite the same thing, but now imagine a teen who might want to drag the guitar to school, friends houses, and later to a dorm, put stickers on it, garage relic it... you know act like a teen Now consider the kid might not even play it after 6 months. I budgeted $600 for guitar and $250 for a practice amp for each of my teens. It didn't stick with my daughter, but my son is playing off and on and just getting into music. If he keeps playing and enjoying it a gift down the road might be a nicer American made guitar and tube amp, by then he'll know more of what he wants and probably appreciate it more. $1500 for an American Strat and $1000 for an amp is not a huge deal... but man I got to be true to my Scottish heritage
  3. Might throw this guy an offer... asking $299 with a case https://reverb.com/item/64139927-squier-classic-vibe-60s-custom-telecaster-3-color-sunburst-w-molded-soft-case
  4. I would vote for the Squier CV 60's Tele. I have the Squier CV tele and a MIM player tele. The Squier (or at least the one I bought) feels like a much nicer guitar than the MIM Fender. It just does. The Fender has nicer electronics if you open it up and look, but honestly the Alpha mini pots feel nicer/smoother than the CTS pots in the MIM Fender and work exactly the same. The switch is not as nice in the CV, but serviceable. Will they last? IDK but the pots are $6 bucks a piece and the switch is $10, so that's a problem for future Chad Fuck. The one catch is that I would absolutely only buy the Squier used. You know what you're looking at so you'll be able to get a nice example. I think I paid $280 (it's pristine) and I don't think it'll ever depreciate from that number. Use the rest to buy her the nicest amp that fits the remainder of your budget. I know for a gift that's not as ideal, but you'll know if that would matter to your daughter. If you buy new, I would absolutely get a Fender. Resale, the name on the head stock, 22 frets, just need a setup (which you could do together with her) Conversely have you/she thought about a SG? Small/light/contoured body/thinner shorter neck. I took my daughter to checkout/try out guitars fully expecting her to choose a strat. After a solid hour and a half at the store holding/playing everything she could get her hands on the SG was all she wanted because it fit her more comfortably.
  5. Came here to post this... But since I'm here these are very good too

    Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant's favorite cover band.... You're welcome
  7. That's the plan. Going to try and do the setup myself. Then when it's good and fucked I'll take it in to the shop down the street. Also planning on dressing the fret ends. FYI to any Adorama peeps, I opened it up and it has an Oak Grigsby switch and 250k CTS pots, I think that's pretty standard but at least you know they didn't spec it out with cheaper electronics to get the price down.
  8. Now just have to learn to play like turtleneck Freddy Mercury and dance like Cable Michael Hutchence
  9. Arrived today... While the box looked worse, and had been opened and re stapled, the guitar looks much better... thoughts compared to the one I returned The finish on this guitar looks perfect The latest guitar is 8'3oz compared to 7'12oz The neck is darker and has more grain This guitar is not intonated well on the 2/6 strings (setup) Action seems high out of the box (setup) The fret ends are not great (about the same as the other guitar) some sharp some not, but on the high e string, the first fret doesn't even come to the edge of the fret board, it doesn't miss by much but that's a new one for me. (pic below) Serial starts with MX22 and fender shows 1/22 build date

  11. My question: Is he going to buy the full set (all 7?) Epi artist edition. I mean why would you not? also UPS says tomorrow is NGD redux
  12. Looks like your going to be playing in sweat pants a lot. Bee careful. I'll show myself out
  13. If he's the dude on bass, hopefully he's been working on "The Winds of Winter"
  14. Has Herbie gone on his Ohio St should be in the playoffs diatribe yet? Because if he hasn't you can be damned sure he will.
  15. Kitna no longer a Gator... headed back home to Burleson Texas https://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/florida-gators/os-sp-uf-florida-gators-football-jalen-kitna-dimissed-1203-20221202-72i4zx5aebaffkea6ohlnais6u-story.html
  16. I agree, but hear me out. It literally cost them NOTHING extra to make their product better by cutting the nut to a normal width. The nut is still 42mm so they didn't save on material. There are still other things that can create differentiation. The wood choice, the cheaper electronics, country of origin, etc... those make a difference and help keep cost lower. So doing those things makes sense and creates tiers in product lines. Just cutting the nut narrower is a straight up dick move. The nut on my CV cut is 2.14mm narrower from e to e string compared to the MIM. As for the sticker upgrade, the counterfeiters prove that's a viable path.
  17. If I keep this guitar (which I am leaning towards), I am almost definitely going to get the nut replaced. But it does occur to me that I know fuck all about why Squier might have done this or the implications of just changing the string spacing at the nut. Is there an issue with the tuner spacing/angles of the string from the tuners to the nut? Or should I just practice with the tighter string spacing and "get good" I can imagine those Fender/Squier bastards in a corporate meeting room... "You know what would be funny? Lets put a real bone nut on the CV so the spec sheet / marketing guys are happy about the Squier guitar upgrade path, but lets cut the string spacing a little tight so it's harder to play and makes the MIM guitars feel better/worth an extra $400" High fives and all around! "Also lets gloss the fuck out of the neck!" FIN
  18. Well I just figured something out... When I compared specs of the the Squier CV tele and the MIM fenders they seem to be the same in regard to nut width and neck width. But when I play the Squier I have a harder time with A Chords (or really any chord up by the neck) than I do with the MIM strat or even the MIM tele that I just returned. I keep muting the high e... I feel like Mongo fingering a violin. I had checked the neck and nut width with calipers and the CV & MIM had the same/super similar measurements and it bothered me yesterday. It took me a while, I'm an idiot, but I got the calipers back out and measured the string spacing. Sumbitch! Why would you put a narrower string spacing on the same sized nut/neck ?? Fuck off Squier. Is this some bullshit to make the Squier play/feel different/harder to play?
  19. Glad he's in jail and suspended indefinitely from the team. I know innocent until proven guilty, due process etc, but in this situation the university should move faster towards complete separation. If guilty I hope he gets everything coming to him and more.
  20. It wasn't pot noise, it felt like the knob was rubbing sandpaper. No sound just tactile. Not that I've felt a lot, but in handling 30-ish guitars I haven't felt pots that scratchy. I agree probably dirty and may have smoothed out. I don't think the guitar got damaged in the box, I'd bet it got packed by fender that way. The box was unopened and in good shape, the foam bag didn't look like it had much wear either. Plus that crack on the body looks like it had been filled with something. There were a few other really nit picky flaws in the finish that you'd never notice unless you really looked for it. I went back and looked over my son's strat (also bought @ Adorama) and his is pristine (even after a couple of years being owned by a teen) And no bag, just the guitar, tags, and allen wrench
