Don't worry about all that bougie high end shit. You can get better food at a local Indian or African restaurant.

I think it was Enish Oxford where I had a very good West African meal. Belly up to the bar and enjoy

Some of my bougie high end shit is ethnic as well. Sorry for traveling with an expense account. Geez.

My wife and I are going to London next week for 4 nights.  Just a quick getaway.  We are squared away on almost everything, but she wants to fit in some shopping, more of the higher end variety.  What's the best market/area for that?

My wife managed to drop some money at various boutiques in the Seven Dials area.

Knightsbridge or South Kensington. Or just go up and down Oxford street and Regent street.

The guy said he's traveling on a tight budget this trip and wanted some cheap eats spots. Geez.
Don't be so defensive.  I was only saying that you don't need to spend over $200 to have a very good meal.

Harrods is chaos. I love Liberty and Fortnum & Mason (F&M also can be chaos) and the arcades (Burlington, etc..) and Old Bond St.

it's chaos, but he can drink prosecco and eat pizza while wife shops

Thanks for all of the suggestions.  Super helpful.

Also, I was reading back a few pages and saw UK ETA thing.  I had no idea that we had to do that.  I can now show my wife that Surlyhorns is useful and not a TOTAL waste of time.

It's great. Through immigration in 30 seconds.

A tragic and interesting story about connecting through LHR if you don't follow the fucking signs.

Heh. I did the exact same thing at LHR flying through to Barcelona last year. Luckily I had two hours in between flights or I would have been borked. It sucked taking the train & going through security but I made it. Felt like a moron afterwards.

Ok--I have a very specific scenario/question on this.

I am going through LHR in January, and I have to transfer from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5 on the outbound leg.  I am Executive Platinum on AA.  I will have no checked luggage.  My layover is 3 hours 15 minutes.  With that information, should I:

(A) Follow the purple "Flight Connections" signs and take the airside bus to Terminal 5, where I'd still have to go through security (though they do have a premium line), or

(B) Clear immigration, hit the AA arrivals lounge at Terminal 3 to grab a shower and cup of coffee, take the Underground over to Terminal 5 where I can go through the BA First check-in situation which has a minimal security line and empties directly into the First Class Lounge?

I'm guessing you're arriving sometime in the morning which makes B a no brainer. Unless you like jostling amongst the unwashed masses at Wetherspoon.

I think so too. He gets expedited immigration lanes in 5 and probably also through security in t3. Then 2 hours or so in the first class lounge to shower, dine or drink more.

SPOON'S!

I need to find a way to upload the conversation between one of my daughter's roommates and Declan the drunk Irish convict at a Spoon's in Islington when we were all having a pint together.  A few minutes in, I just turned on my video record function and captured the drunken Spoon's magic.

Last month, getting through 5 was very fast.  I went from my house in N. London to the T5 gate for the Austin flight in 1 hour (Northern Line -> Elizabeth Line -> transfer to T5 -> Security).  I didn't have a bag.

To be clear--if I followed Option A, I wouldn't be going to Weatherspoon's.  I'd go straight to the BA First Class Lounge as soon as I cleared the connection security at T5.  The real issue with that plan is that the showers at the BA First Lounge are inferior and there aren't many of them.  But at the AA Arrivals lounge, there are a ton of showers.

I just don't know the geography of LHR well enough to remember if clearing customs and going to the AA Arrivals lounge is going to commit me to a whole ton of extra walking.

Lizzie line is a thing of beauty.  Makes the to-from LHR a breeze.  When we flew in last time, my wife insisted on a cab.  Heading back out, I insisted on taking the Lizzie line, and she agreed it was quicker and stress-free.

I'll never not do the tube again. We did a car service once when we thought we had too many bags to drag around and a 40 minute drive took 2 hours.  After he went in a giant circle twice, I had to give him directions.  Good thing it was a flat fee.
