If memory serves right, we had a QB from a 3A school.   Hmm... I know his name started with a C.  I'm pretty sure it was Colt something or other.

A lot of people keep comparing her to Citlaly , in that because she played at a 2A school, she isn't built to pitch at Texas.  She didn't end the year well, but she has a 2.17 ERA in 3 years at Texas and a 34-9 record with 7 saves.

She didn't have a great year, but if she can get back to her 2.00ish ERA years, I'd be glad for her to stick around and be a reliever or #3 pitcher again.  Depends on Wells' development (TK #1, Cam #2).

We won the whole thing with a 2.55 ERA (15th best in the country).  #1 lost in the semis (to us), #2 lost in the finals (to us), #6 got swept in the supers, #10 and #11 didn't make it to the semis in OKC and #13 lost in the supers.

If Hannah can finish around a 2.50 or less, she will be a big time contributor. Cam finished at 2.48 her freshman year and had 2 huge appearances against Clemson and Texas Tech. TK was 2.20 to finish her freshman year.

Tighter overall defense and another year of development for several key hitters hopefully will give our pitchers a bit more margin for error in 2026. But to be on the safe side, let's try to get that ERA even lower.

Man, there was a lot of movement in the final ESPN poll

1 Texas (4)
2 Tech (10)
3 OU (2)
4 Tennessee (6)
5 UCLA (9)
6 Oregon (11)
7 Florida (5)
8 Ole Miss (21)
9 FSU (7)
10 South Carolina (12)
11 Clemson (13)
12 Nebraska (20)
13 Arkansas (3)
14 Alabama (16)
15 aggy (1)
16 Liberty (RV)

Kind of shitty to rank aggy above Liberty. And Arkansas  and aggy  both shouldn't finish top 16, they didn't make a super.  Clemson was far more competitive in their super regional than FSU.

But Texas did the following against the final top 25 (20-12 record)

#2 (4-1 record)
#3 (1-3 record)
#4 (2-2 record)
#7 (3-1 record)
#8 (1-0 record)
#11 (2-1 record)
#15 (0-1 record)
#18 Arizona (1-0 record)
#19 LSU (2-1 record)
22 Stanford (0-1 record)
#23 Miss St (2-1 record)
#24 Ohio State (1-0 record)
#25 OKST (1-0 record)

No one has hit the portal yet? How many more days do they have to enter?

Closes Monday, June 16.  Think Mike needs a little time this week for end-of-season evals and interviews, since the team just got home on Saturday and immediately celebrated.

Also Houston is filled - Texas staff looks to be intact for another season.  Was kind of worried UH would make a run at Singleton or Zaleski.

Mike White quote from the Chronicle today.   This may be his goal but as we know he always has a revolving lineup.   He is really excited about the incoming class.

Quote

“It’s going to be interesting,” White told me Tuesday. “We’ll have third base competition between the freshmen. Katie Stewart will be at first base, but Hannah Wells could also play at first base when she’s not pitching. Lawson and Nichols can push Martinez at shortstop.” … He doesn’t know if he’ll lose any players to the portal as he goes through exit meetings. “So far no,” he said, “but I’m always anxious.”

There was an articles in the AAS about the roster Texas built and Mike’s core philosophy is the best in Texas HS softball need to stay in state and come to Texas. With the exception of elite talent you can lure to Austin, like TK (Indiana) and Stewie (Illinois) last year and the year before (Vivi from Arizona)

I foresee this team continuing to be built on the back of recruits that Mike develops + a few transfers to fill holes

Can't help but think his experience attempting to integrate his UO and UT rosters and that turning into a shitshow, despite all the talent. has an influence on this.

Future Texas Longhorn Hannah Wells Gatorade NATIONAL player of year!! Can’t wait to watch her hit and pitch next season for the longhorns! 31 home runs by a pitcher is impressive! Hookem 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

I'm pretty sure 31 home runs is a state single season record irregardless of position.

Let’s not worry about vivi at short and let them two battle over 3rd. Unless he has that solved already.

I'd guess they need to go through a whole offseason of drills to be sure she still has the lateral movement from her ACL injury to continue to play short.

You think this is tied to whether Winfield returns next season?

Kinda, yeah.  Just my hunch:

If he stays here - Texas

If he goes elsewhere - Baylor

My assumption is she's coming home to Texas regardless, just a matter of where she ends up based on Easton's decision.

Also I should say, I think it will depend on Citlaly staying or going

We carried 5 pitchers this year, but Sophia didn't really play, so it was more like 4 with Mac, TK, Cit and Cam.  With Mac leaving and Wells coming in, a 5th pitcher doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  Unless Cit is gone.  And if Texas is pursuing Fisher, Pannell, Johnson and maybe Tanner, gotta think Cit's intentions have been made to Mike and co.

Also my depend on how Mike and co. see Wells' pitching adjusting well enough to handle D1 (and P4) hitting or whether she's going to get spotty playing time in the circle and spend more time at DP/1B instead.  In which case, a 5th pitcher is needed, because she would really be a 4th.

What level of portal pitcher might seriously entertain a Texas offer this offseason?

TK's 207 innings represented nearly half the team total in 2025, and I assume her workload won't decrease much, if any. (Of course, the team's total innings played this year was a historically high number.) If we plan on needing 200 or so innings from the remainder of our 2026 staff, I'm guessing 90 of those could end up going to Cam. (She pitched 62 as a freshman.) That would leave roughly 110 to divide among Cit (if she stays), Wells and a transfer.

I'm guessing we've seen the last of Cit in burnt orange, but even if she portals out and Wells gets a slightly lighter load than Cam did this year, we're still looking at needing a transfer to cover only only about 60 innings. Of course, those 60 could make or break a team's year, especially if pitched in relief in tight games. And the more I think about it, the better fit that makes Mizzou's Taylor Pannell. A lefty with tons of experience closing out wins in relief is one thing we don't have. She doesn't dazzle with stats but is a proven performer with games on the line.

I’d say the goal is not to need TK to have to make 3 appearances a weekend. Whether to means Jane All Staff on a Saturday, or TK getting to come out after the 5th or 6th, that’s what I want

The Tennessee Taylor Pannell (yes two of them) allegedly has signed with Tech, but I don’t think she’s officially in yet ? Or is constantly waffling between Tech and Tenn. VolNation reporting is a whip lash

Goode had 13 errors this year, compared to only 4 last year...short stop had a lot to do with that....Bennett also had 13 errors as well.  Vivi's injury definitely hurt, but we made do.

I think you're right, but I never can remember his roommates name. Something like Dunkin I think. I don't know why Donuts always come to mind.

But reality is for every Colt McCoy there's 10 Mark Buchanan's. And the other reality is club softball kinda washes out the unknows because the best players all play together regardless of where they played in HS. Teagan didn't even play HS ball. I think Wells will do fine.

Grasso & Glasso want to buy a NC. The hell with you players we started recruiting 4-5 years ago. If we find someone better than you, get the hell out of here. A billion dollars can buy better players than Texas, but I think it's somewhat unethical. I hope it eventually catches up with them.

Goode was out of the lineup a bunch due to her wrist injury last year. Started 22 games comoared to 66.      Martinez and Washington were starting in '24.

Not a lot of teams could overcome a brutal injury to your stud SS and what we had to deal with re: the middle infield "defense" at times.

Hopefully Vivi comes back healthy, strong and ready to rock and roll.  Goode is fantastic defensively at 2B and her bat really came alive at the end of the season.

Maloney, Henry, Vivi, Atwood, Stewie, Goode is a hell of a starting 6 players in your lineup + what Mike and co. do with the portal and freshman for the bottom of the order.

yet we praise Sarkisian and other coaches for cutting the fat on their football rosters. The portal is here to stay and this is the new way of doing business. If my kid was a recruit these days, I'd urge her to pursue mid major teams, establish herself as a player and then transfer to the highest bidder.

Fml I really wanted Tanner here, but her situation at Tennessee being behind Pickens wouldn’t have been much different than at Texas behind TK so I get it. Not concerned about Easton leaving as I’m sure they are content with the 90 mile separation. Both of their hometowns are 40 minutes apart so if they were highschool sweethearts they’re used to driving to see each other

I have wondered, to myself, if we were only listed because of Easton.  If she didn't want to sit behind an established ace, Texas was also a bad place to go.  Because TK is only going to be a junior; Pickens at least is going to be a senior.

Baylor needs as much help as they can get, tbh. They were not good last year.

Feels like if we are going to get another pitcher, it will be someone with 1 year left, because they want to contend for a title and graduate.

To me, the ideal approach is to keep recruiting HS talent at the highest level, adding transfer talent mainly to offset major injuries and defections. Of course, if a HS recruit just doesn't develop or give max effort, no one should complain about an attempt to upgrade that spot with a proven transfer. (Not to name any names here, but let's all run really hard to 1B.)

The need for maturity, physicality and depth in football forces Sark's hand on occasion. Plus, if a player at a key position has an unexpectedly great year and turns pro early, that can create a sudden hole to plug. (Goodbye Matthew, hello Emmett.) Sark also has gone shopping to replace notably poor performers (certain kickers and punters, for instance).

Winning remains the goal in all these sports. So if each year White selectively shops in the portal for a few clear upgrades, I don't think anyone should question that approach. He's balanced it well lately.

It's really difficult to go against Mike building a title team through recruiting, with one or two key transfers.  Most of the key contributors were top 50 or top 100 recruits.

Like you said, depth is more important for football and the draft can create holes.  Texas had 6 of 8 everyday offensive players (Maloney, Henry, Mia, Reese, Stewie, Goode) recruited to and developed at Texas; I do not recall Mitchell being a highly sought after recruit and we all know KB was not. 3 of 4 pitchers were recruited to and developed at Texas - TK, Cit, Cam.  And Mac Morgan was not a rental, she came here as a sophomore and was coached/developed for 3 seasons.

I think the lack of overall portal success outside of the Oregon 4, Joley, Mac, Czech and Dolcini speaks to Mike's belief that the majority of his roster needs to be primarily recruited to Texas and developed by Texas.

And Dolcini was a special case, because Elish screwed us as hard as possible

I would be shocked if Texas picks up more than 2 portal players this year, depending on if Cit leaves or not.

Agreed that coaches still have to recruit at a high level to be successful. Patty has always recruited top ranked classes. Many people on this board say she can't develop talent without acknowledging the fact that she just won four straight titles with possibly the most talented roster ever assembled. Jennings, Alo, Coleman, Lyons, Hansen and others were all her recruits. Who can blame some of the 5* kids who left for playing time elsewhere. Players like Donahue, Eriksen, Nugent, Guerin and others starred in the SEC for other teams. They were good players but they weren't beating out those kids ahead of them. No one should blame Patty or other coaches for bringing players in to improve their roster. If Mike would have signed Canady last year, everyone would have praised him.
